I'm a soldier.
I'm a soldier.
I thought I told you.
Don't be unwise.
Just be not by my side.
You won't believe your eyes.
Watch the X-Ray arise.
Yoda.
Why you mean it?
I'm a hater.
You love it.
I'm a hater.
This is especially apropos for that song this time because we're going to have a good Star Wars discussion today.
Hello, everybody.
It's Angry Dorks Podcast, Monday, 6 to 7 p.m.
Here's a phone number.
It's 1-800-893-9562.
I just ran from a subway, so that's why I sound like a molester.
We got Ed Greer drawing, as always.
Yay.
We got Klee Wiggins.
Hey, hey, hey.
We got Matt Blackwood.
What's up?
What's up?
And I believe we have Dawn on the phone.
You hear, Dawn?
That's right.
I'm the ghost on the phone.
Woo-hoo.
Exactly.
She's one of the machines now.
Are you keeping track of our comments, even though I'm sure no one has commented at this point?
I'm not.
Okay, then I'm going to- I can do it on my phone.
I mean, I can do it on my Kindle.
Okay.
Your Kindle is probably better than my shitty phone.
I'm so sorry.
I didn't get on there yet.
I'm pretty angry about this whole thing.
Can you tell how angry I am?
Well, but I don't know how to sign into your thing.
So, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
But anyway, yes, I'm very excited, even though I'm just on the phone today, because it's going to be a great show.
It is going to be fun.
We got Ben Bates, who's going to call in in a little while.
Yeah.
And if you guys know Ben Bates, he's a great, great comic artist.
So, we're going to have a good time with him.
But I just wanted to call in really quickly and say hi to everybody and wish you guys an awesome, awesome show from where I am.
Thank you.
Standing in lovely, another part of town.
Anyway.
I'm showing my titties right now.
Yes.
Oh, God.
How am I missing that?
I know.
It's a sad world.
How am I missing that?
Seriously.
They're basically sex Skyping with all of us in the room.
That's exactly right.
Creep.
Yeah, that's true.
Creepy.
All right.
Well, you guys have an awesome and fantabulous show.
Thank you.
And I'll be back soon.
Yay.
Bye, Don.
All right.
Take care, guys.
See you.
So, I guess, well, we got Ed showed up.
Yeah.
He wasn't supposed to.
He wasn't supposed to.
He didn't show up.
And then he was actually before me.
We were making fun of Ed just recently about his inability to be on time places.
And now he's on time when he said he was going to be late.
He told me he was going to be super late.
He literally walked in the door 45 seconds before you did, which was about 90 seconds ago.
You son of a bitch.
Well, you know.
Okay.
So, what are we talking about?
I was the first one here.
Well, okay.
Then what we're going to talk about first, I guess, is we're going to...
Darwin.
Yes.
We're going to do best Star Wars movie.
And we're actually just going to put them in order because at some point, we're going to go, because this was Tim Babb's idea, we're going to go worst Star Wars movie versus worst Star Trek movie and decide which one sucks more for a later one.
So, next episode or two episodes down the road, we'll be doing a...
I can give you my worst Star Trek movie right now.
Okay.
Which is Final Frontier.
Final Frontier.
The one with, they go to meet God.
I support that.
Black.
Oh, yeah.
Lawrence Luckenbill.
Yeah, that was pretty shitty.
Trying to channel Sean Connery.
Not succeeding.
See, and I'm like one of the anomaly because I'm the one who...
I really loved the one with the whale.
Yeah, I actually liked that one too.
I watched that one today at work.
That may be a stupid Star Trek thing.
Yeah.
That may be in the universe, in the canon of Star Trek.
That may be a stupid fucking occurrence.
But as far as movies go, that is a fun fucking movie.
Yeah, I laughed a whole bunch.
It's a good movie.
It's a terrible Star Trek movie, but it is a decent movie.
It's a good movie.
It's a good movie.
It's a good movie.
It's a good movie.
It's a good movie.
It's a good movie.
I watched it only because I was feeling a little homesick and the whole thing takes place in San Francisco.
Did you also watch Bullet?
No, I don't have that on my Kindle.
What's a bullet?
That's Steve McQueen.
Awesome Steve McQueen movie.
Steve McQueen drives through San Francisco.
It's just Steve McQueen just jumping cars all the way to San Francisco.
Best car of all time.
Now I remember.
One of the best car changes of all time.
Now I remember.
Also, 48 Hours is another one I watch sometimes when I'm homesick.
You ever watch Alcatraz to get un-homesick?
Oh, they ain't having so much of a good time in San Francisco.
I watched The Rock.
Yeah, I was about to say that.
Oh, that's another one of my guilty pleasures.
I saw a Criterion edition of The Rock.
There is such a thing?
That's ridiculous.
That's like a Faberge edition of a piece of shit.
That's ridiculous.
But anyway.
Okay, so Star Wars.
Okay, but I think this is pretty easy though.
Yeah, I don't think it's easy.
Four, five, six, three, two, one.
And I disagree.
I always disagree.
Five, four, six, three, two, one.
Five, four, six, three, two, one.
You don't like...
Phantom Menace is the worst one.
Yeah, that's one.
That's the first one.
Which one's the worst one?
Phantom Menace.
That's agreed.
That's agreed, I think, by all of us.
Phantom Menace.
See...
Hold on, hold on.
Okay.
Does anybody disagree?
So far, nobody is...
Report in as quickly as possible if you disagree with that shit.
Yeah, if you disagree that Phantom Menace is the worst.
It's not the worst.
Okay, I have a problem.
I think the second one is worse.
Or the second new one is worse.
The Clone?
Episode two?
Clone Wars?
Yeah, Clone Wars.
Really?
Because the love story is so fucking badly written.
Yes, that is the truth.
That it makes me want to stab a motherfucker every single...
Would you say it's written like Bantha Poodoo?
Yes, I would.
It's total Bantha Poodoo.
I can't say it right now.
But here's the thing.
The reason I don't like it is...
The reason the first one I enjoyed a tiny bit.
Not a lot.
I mostly hated it.
I enjoyed the Mace Windu...
I mean, not Mace Windu.
The fight scene between...
Yeah, there's about ten minutes of fun, good, solid action.
The podcast.
I mean, the podcast.
The pod racing.
The pod racing thing is...
No, no, the pod racing can suck a dick.
The pod racing is okay.
Although it's over the top, obviously.
It's too long, though.
Yeah, it's too long and the kid...
It's a little over the...
Even for a Jedi kid.
Yippee!
That kid's wooing and yippeeing.
No.
No.
Yeah, having just rewatched...
I mean, the point of it was to be like, oh, he's innocent and nice and blah, blah, blah.
Look how innocent and nice he is.
And he's going to be the killer of all children.
Which is what's totally wrong with that entire prequel as a set.
Oh, yeah.
As a whole.
The argument that everybody puts forth is, oh, in Star Wars, in episode four, Obi-Wan tells Luke that his father was a great pilot.
And people argue, oh, well, he was a good pod race pilot.
It's like, yeah, that's not all he said.
I just rewatched it.
He also says he was like one of the greatest warriors that he had met.
And it's like...
No.
We never see any evidence of that ever.
That kid's a little piece of shit.
Yeah, and on top of that...
Superman and I were going back and forth earlier today on Facebook when this came up as to be the topic of discussion today.
Because he has said his perfect structure of what the prequels would be.
My perfect structure for the movies would be the basics of menace and clones together as one movie.
And essentially how Palpatine becomes the Chancellor.
And the start of the Clone Wars.
And the second movie would be the Clone Wars.
Why would you take a massive, massive interstellar war in a franchise called Star Wars and have it all happen off screen in a spin-off cartoon?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Your movies are called...
Especially because you can show Anakin actually fighting in a war and just like taking out...
Instead of that stupid like gladiator...
Power droids and...
Like animal fucking gladiator game that he was in.
Whereas once again they kill a Fett way too fucking quickly.
Yeah.
That's the Fett's bane.
Yeah.
I'm sorry about this by the way guys.
I'm sweating.
I'm showing it off.
Do what you gotta do.
It's okay.
Yeah, I don't like why he was a kid in the beginning of the movie too.
So we all vote...
So you say...
You guys say...
I think you're the only descending voice for Phantom...
Yeah, Phantom Menace.
And I think the only...
I do believe that Darth Maul is the coolest villain that they introduced over the whole thing.
All quiet and kind of evil.
Would you call it a little bit of...
What's that?
Honorable mention for General Grievous?
Yeah, General Grievous is pretty badass.
I disagree.
Honorable mention.
Because Darth Maul...
Darth Maul is cooler than General Grievous.
Who programs a robot to be sick?
That is so fucking stupid.
Well, he's not all robot.
He's not all robot.
He's part organic.
He's basically a cyborg.
He became a robot because he got so fucked up.
Like it's the graduation of the idea.
I guess...
And he's also the start of Darth Vader.
Right, right.
It's supposed to show you that, yeah, a dude can get so fucked up that he's a robot.
He's part of a whole thing like...
I did not take that away at all.
And here's the thing.
That's because they didn't explain it well.
They don't make it clear in the movies, but it...
Is this only in the cartoon?
No, and you also know it if you read the books.
Books and cartoons.
Which is retarded.
I agree that you're about to be pissed off and I totally concur.
No, I had this conversation on my podcast with Paul Sevis and we were talking about all the shit that, oh, as soon as somebody says, as soon as somebody brings in, oh, well, this is in the book.
I'm like, fuck you.
No, if that's not on screen, if I can't understand it enough to get by, then it's not.
No, yeah, you need to explain everything.
And you need to explain everything.
Yeah, no, they did.
I concur that they did not do a good enough job because there's in the book, especially in the Bounty Hunter Wars, there's a contemporary Boba Fett, Doreen, which is the name of my blog, by the way.
Little plug for that on Tumblr.
My Tumblr blog is called D-H-R-H-A-N.
I'm glad I asked.
Nobody would have gotten that.
Yeah.
My blog is called The Tribble with Doreen.
It's stupid.
The nerdiest thing ever.
But he is part man and part machine and he's basically like everything, like his head and most of his body is all machine and only his arms.
He's basically like Robocop, but also minus the head.
And he also has a tail for two, balance himself.
So when he shoots off one of his guns, it's for, you know, to keep his balance up because one of his guns is super mega powerful.
It's hilarious.
It's badass.
He's just basically turned himself into a weapon to be a bounty hunter.
Yeah, he's just a weapon to be a bounty hunter.
It's like, you're collecting all this money to be a bounty hunter.
What do you plan on doing with this when you are no longer a bounty hunter?
Tail fucking?
A lot of tail fucking.
It's an idea that never even occurs to him, what he's going to do after.
Why would I even think about that?
The books are awesome, by the way.
Yeah.
I highly recommend it.
If you're going to start with the Star Wars books too, I would highly recommend starting with Bounty Hunter Wars.
What was Boba Fett doing between showing up in Star Wars?
As soon as he becomes 51% machine, he's just going to declare war on the humans, right?
I mean, that's what they do.
Well, I mean, not in the Star Wars universe, obviously.
But I think Menace also loses on basically the final battle thing in each of the movies is better than the one in Phantom Menace.
I'll give you that one because it's so coincidence driven.
Especially in the Sith, I think in Revenge of the Sith, I think that the final battle is better The climax fight in that movie is probably the best fight scene of all the movies.
Yeah, that fight scene.
Of all six movies.
It's badass, yeah.
The one between Obi-Wan and Anakin.
That fight is awesome.
That's a good fight.
That is awesome.
You can't take anything away from the fight.
The fight scenes are great.
And the views are, like, I mean, the beginning of Revenge of the Sith where he's going through that fucking dog fight, it's beautiful, but it was just like...
You're saying, like, the background, like, it looks good?
It looks good.
Yeah, it looks good, but it's...
The fight is good.
It was one of the best...
Starry Night looks good.
It doesn't make a Star Wars movie.
But that's also why...
But it was one of the best dog fights I've seen since, like, watching Top Gun, which, by the way, if you go back and watch Top Gun, that fucking dog fight is bad ass.
Oh, no, yeah, I watched Top Gun today, too.
Top Gun's good.
Awesome.
Yeah, Top Gun is definitely good.
Well, and I'd say, for me, it goes Phantom Menace, the second one.
Clone Wars?
Yeah, Clone Wars.
Because I did like a lot of the opening Obi-Wan Kenobi, like, Batman and Robin, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin, when they were chasing the free fall through the floating city.
Sometimes Anakin's better.
That's pretty tight.
It wasn't completely shitty.
Yeah.
It was only kind of shitty.
But the love story in that sucked so bad.
As soon as you see Padme, he becomes a fucking tard.
And I don't understand why Lucas did not turn over that aspect of the screenplay to somebody else, because he himself has admitted that he sucks at writing dialogue and love stuff.
He was going to turn over all of the writing and the directing of the prequels to somebody else.
Which he should have done.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He decided at the last minute that he was going to do it.
But at least that much.
He can do stories.
He can do stories.
He can do a base story plot and then be like, you make it work.
As long as somebody else is allowed to change his shit.
Yeah.
Yeah.
As long as somebody else is allowed to write it, he's a good story idea guy.
That basically makes him an executive.
I mean, that basically makes him a producer.
Which I wish he would recognize fully.
You know.
I mean, sincerely, he might be the most talented executive producer there ever was.
Ever.
Yeah.
I mean, he executive produced, uh, Indiana Jones movies, which are all awesome.
I don't give a fuck what you say, except for the last one, of course.
Yeah.
The trilogy of Indiana Jones movies, all of them are awesome.
You mean you didn't love the part where he gets blown up in a nuclear bomb inside a refrigerator and somehow survives?
all physics.
My only response is, who's saying they're not?
I, who's saying they're not?
No, no, I'm just saying, I'm just saying, like, like, he.
But it's like, it's as evidence of his executive producing prowess.
look what he does, executive producing.
Fuck yeah.
A fucking, a fucking, uh, uh, Empire Strikes Back, uh, all the Indiana Jones movies.
Red Tails.
Uh, Red Tails.
Yeah, Red Tails.
Which I never saw, but.
Puts the black cherry on that.
Red Tails is, is good for what it was and what he, what he had to work with.
Okay, fair enough.
I wouldn't say it's a great movie, but it was good for what it, what they had to work with.
I think they achieved as much as they could have possibly achieved.
Okay, so, okay, so then we were agreeing at least, I'm going to go ahead and concede, even though I still disagree.
required to see Red Tails.
I'm going to concede, even though I totally disagree, well, I totally disagree, but I'll concede Phantom Menace is the worst.
Yes.
Well, and Sith is the best.
The basic argument is, and Sith is the best of those three, of the, the prequels.
This is easy for, for Phantom Menace though.
There's maybe five watchable minutes in Phantom Menace.
Fair enough.
In Attack of the Clones, even though maybe nothing, there's 25 watchable minutes.
nothing beats that, you know, uh, chopping in half scene of Darth Maul, there's still like, yeah, maybe like 20.
Well, and that's when we get to see, uh, Yoda fight the first time, right?
Yeah.
So the Yoda fight, the first time.
How did you guys feel about the Yoda fight?
I want to hear this.
Yoda!
Because I remember when I first watched it, I was like so pissed off through the whole movie, but then when Yoda like drops the cane, it's like, I was like, oh shit.
Oh, I loved it when I watched it in the theater and I was like, oh, Yoda, he's flipping around, he's doing shit, that's awesome.
And then I thought about it later and I'm like, oh, that's retarded.
Well, and, and the reason I thought about it later was because I'm thinking about Bruce Lee, uh, talking about, and, and, and expert swordsmans, like guys who fight, like, if you've read the Art of War, uh, uh, he, he's like, yeah, don't waste movement.
And Yoda, all Yoda does is waste movement.
Yeah.
As fast as he travels, he's basically traveling like Sonic the Hedgehog, doing those flips, to get up, to meet lightsaber, to lightsaber, uh, in that amount of time, I don't understand why he's not just chopping niggas knees off.
Both the legs, both the arms, boom, boom, head off, done.
And also, also Count Dooku shouldn't even be a fucking, like, yeah, that should not have even been, it's not a challenge to him.
No, Count Dooku is not a challenge.
They should have had the guy drop some shit on, on Yoda, and then run away if they wanted him to survive.
That's the only part of that fight scene would make sense.
And also, why not drop some huge ass shit on Yoda?
There was like five rocks.
Yeah.
He lifted a fucking X-Wing when he was old.
And by the way, the Star Trek, I mean, excuse me, Star Wars, uh, version of getting old, where it takes 25 years for you to age 50.
What the fuck is that?
Excuse me, 17 years.
Yeah.
Cause you fucking, Luke is like 17 years old.
Yeah.
So homeboy went from, look, from being 800 years old and looking spry as fuck.
Yeah.
To 817 and looking old as fuck.
Yeah.
Like what?
He's been living in a swamp for 17 years.
His health has been affected.
Well, if you live in a swamp or you live in a desert.
And it is a swamp that's a, if you've read the books, you know that it's infested.
The entire planet is infested with the dark side.
Yeah.
I do have, and that's I think what aged him.
Asians are like that too though.
Yeah, they do.
They go from like white lily flower to Yoda.
We stay like, uh, they stay looking 25.
We stay looking like 40 until we're like, 70.
And then it pops into immediately.
You look like, uh, like the old man from the gremlins.
You really look like Yoda actually.
But maybe he ages that way.
Yeah.
I get that.
Fine.
Whatever.
But, but even then.
And Yoda was living on a planet infested, which they don't explain, which they should, uh, that he's living on a planet infested with the dark side.
And the dark side.
Is hiding him too.
Uh, it, but it also, it ages you.
It ages you way more than using.
And let's talk about the fact that they ruined Yoda just by having him fight the emperor or Count Dooku in this.
The only thing they should have had, Yoda doing is maybe some of the stuff on the clone wars where he like escapes.
Yeah.
But when he escapes, then he goes straight to Dagobah with a fucking knowledge that, that he's not going to be able to, uh, to, to defeat everybody by himself.
He's all depressed about it, you know?
And, and then he goes and hides on the planet so that he can teach Luke later.
That's the only thing that should make sense.
And even though.
Except for the fact that when Luke shows up to be taught, he's like, I'm not going to fucking teach you.
Yeah.
So, which totally to the gauge, because here's the thing.
If they had, if they had started with, uh, Anakin being a teenager in the original movies, it would have made more sense actually for when he, when he goes and doesn't want to train Luke because he doesn't want to repeat the mistake he made with Anakin by training him a little bit too late.
Yeah.
That would have made sense.
But just saying, uh, no, you know, you're too old and, get the fuck out of here is like, it's stupid because there's no explanation for why he's too old.
And even when you go back and watch the prequels, there's no explanation as to why the kids have to be so young.
And they make that argument that he was too old when he was like 10 or something.
Yeah.
But also though, but even with Luke, but they never explained why the kids have to be so young.
And even with the Sith, and the Sith trained full ass adults when they fucking feel like it.
So what's the problem?
Well, that's what the Sith does.
They don't, they don't care.
But also this whole conception, we're missing.
But it's not about like that.
It's just, he made the fucking kid, a kid.
So he could appeal to kids yet another crass, retarded commercial bullshit decision that fucked his own art up.
Yep.
That's the bottom line.
There, there was no story reason for him to be young except for, Ooh, wouldn't it be cool?
If kids, buy the story that, you know, cause then you can show them as an innocent.
Right.
But even, even if he was a 17 year old, he's supposed to kind of be a dick the whole time.
How innocent was Luke though?
How innocent was Luke?
He was 17 years old.
And he was like, I gotta go to Tosche station and fucking check.
Yeah.
That's something we're going to talk about in a second for, because there's, that's my big complaint about why I don't think empire and, and a new hope are the best movies, but we'll go into that.
Okay.
Well, let's, well, let's get into that because we've sussed out the worst of the three.
Okay.
Phantom Menace is the worst.
Phantom Menace.
Okay.
Then fucking the second one.
Then the third one.
Right.
Then, okay.
What is it?
No, I totally agree with that.
Revenge is the Sith is better than the other two.
Cause it's so dark and fucked up and.
Right.
Yeah.
And a better movie.
There's a lot more watchable stuff in that.
That one's like at least.
Until it gets to.
I honestly.
Yeah.
Until it gets to, I almost liked the entire movie.
Honestly.
Which means if you put all three of them together, we racked up, uh, we racked up 90%.
There's almost a full fucking movie.
Yeah.
Out of three movies.
Out of three.
Out of three movies that are all two and a half hours long.
So, okay.
What's okay.
In your opinion, Ron, what is the best of the so-called original three?
I like Return of the Jedi.
Why?
Cause he's a man child.
Because he's finally not a pussy.
The first two movies, Luke Skywalker is a whiny bitch.
I want to go to the.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
The.
I do say it is the only thing that's whack about Empire is that his entire effort to go help them was fucking fruitless and stupid.
Yeah.
That's the only thing where it's like, wow, that's.
And here's my other defense.
Empire is a fucking setup movie.
It's a setup movie for the third movie.
That's all the fuck it is.
That's why.
That's why.
It can't be number one for me.
That's why it's not the best as far as I'm concerned.
Because this is a setup movie.
I agree with that.
But the whole thing of them.
Yeah, they tricked him.
The hero did not make the right decision.
That doesn't make it a bad movie.
Yeah, they tricked him.
No, no, that's fine.
But he's still whining.
Like that whole thing.
They spend like hours and hours or days and days, whatever it is, just torturing Han Solo just to send those evil waves through.
Out to Luke.
So Luke can feel.
We have a caller.
Oh, a caller.
Who's our caller?
Hi, this is Ben Bates.
Hey, Ben Bates.
Ben Bates.
How's it going?
It's going fine.
Don isn't with us right now.
So it's just going to be.
My name is Ron.
We got Ed Greer, Klee Wiggins, Matt Blackwood.
How's it going?
Hey, well, hello to everybody there.
It's going fine.
It's going pretty busy with work.
Awesome.
So our understanding is that you draw Sonic the Hedgehog and that you're going to be on some Dark Horse stuff.
Is that correct?
Yeah, right now I've drawn Sonic in the Past and Mega Man and New Crusaders all for Archie.
And then currently I'm working on a Dark Horse Star Wars Digest.
And then right after that's going to be some Ninja Turtles stuff.
Nice.
Ninja Turtles.
That's exciting.
That's exciting.
Star Wars Digest.
Star Wars Digest.
Tell us something about Star Wars Digest.
They've got, they put out a couple of those a year.
They're the little, they're like 70 to 80 pages.
They're like self-contained stories.
They're usually focused on one character.
I've got a buddy, Jeremy Barlow, who's written a number of them that are pretty cool.
Nice.
So what characters are they focusing on for the ones that you're working on?
What was that?
What characters are the ones that you're working on going to be focused on?
This one is focusing on some clone troopers and a Jedi named Bink Utrilla.
I don't know if that's how you actually pronounce her name or not.
Oh, God.
Bink is the one with the dreads?
Yeah.
Or, well, whatever those things are going to be called.
I knew something.
They're called, I forgot the name of them.
What, the Twi'leks?
Tentacles.
Yeah, they're Twi'leks, but they're not tentacles.
They're not tentacles.
Like Bib and Ob Fortuna.
Yeah.
Okay, they're the Twi'leks.
Yeah, their head, something or other.
They're very force sensitive.
Yeah.
That's cool, man.
Force sensitive race.
Well, we're discussing best Star Wars movies.
And so far, well, we've, and worst Star Wars movies.
We voted Phantom Menaces the worst.
And then we went Clone Troopers second.
And then Return of the Sith.
Revenge of the Sith.
Revenge of the Sith, sorry, third.
And now we're debating the other three on who's the best.
What would you choose best-wise?
Of the original trilogy.
Of the original.
I'm not the, the best person to trust on this.
I actually tend to, I don't know, I tend to enjoy a new hope for a lot of reasons.
Nice with me.
Makes sense.
I'm so outvoted on this shit.
Yeah, nobody likes Jedi.
Nobody likes Jedi.
Why?
It's so great.
Jedi is fun, but it's like 15 minutes of Return of the Jedi are dope.
The diving board action.
The rescue mission.
Yeah, the rescue mission is awesome.
Except, except it also has the dumbest moment in all of the movie, in all of the original trilogy, which is, what?
Boba Fett behind me?
Where?
And then blindly like turns and accidentally takes out Boba Fett.
I think that's hilarious.
I think that's the perfect level of ground.
That basically turned into the entire third act of Phantom Menace.
Yeah, he took that moment, which should have been just that one moment, and he made a whole movie out of it, and he called it the Phantom Menace.
But I like that one moment in that, like that little moment of levity within the middle of that rescue mission.
Boba Fett.
Boba Fett.
He should have, but he should have escaped from the, he should have fucking hit his, just before, and come back out, and then actually fought Luke.
But you find out in the Bounty Hunter trilogy books that Boba Fett, that he does survive.
Yeah.
Okay.
Lame.
The problem, the thing is, he blasts his way out of the stomach.
The people actually made that moment worse for me, because it's like, it's like when somebody says something that might be racist, and you can't quite tell.
When they're like, oh man, I haven't seen this in a coon's age, and they're like, was he saying raccoon?
Or was that, I don't know.
But then you give them the benefit of the doubt, because they're cool, apart from that.
But then like, you don't see them for a little while, and then two years later, like, you know, they come home from college, and you know, they got the shaved head, they're wearing jack boots, and you're like, oh shit.
He did mean the other kind of coon.
That completely colors how I view, just even like, Colors.
Colors.
Colors.
Okay, Ben, we're going to get back to you for a second.
I was, I wanted to ask you, what's it like working in comic books?
Yeah.
It is super cool.
It's probably the only job that I'm actually built to do.
That's awesome.
I have done a ton of really shitty jobs before this, just so I know what it's like to have a real job.
How did you get into doing comic books?
What's that?
How did you get into it?
Like, what was your, your entry into the comic book world?
Well, I spent 10 years wandering around aimless until I moved to Portland, Oregon, and I went to a convention here at Stumptown, in Manhattan, and I met Steve Lieber from Periscope Studio.
And he let me come and do an internship with the studio, and then I learned, like, how you actually contact people and do networking and send out portfolios.
You'd always been drawing then?
Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
Okay, and then you got a mentor, and he sort of showed you the way.
That's pretty cool.
Yeah, exactly.
I'm super grateful to him and everybody else in the studio.
What was the first comic you drew?
Oh, sorry.
What was the first comic that you drew?
The very first one was actually an eight-page story for Dark Horse's MySpace Presents.
They have a bunch of, every month they would put out little eight-page stories.
And after that I went and did Sonic the Hedgehog.
What were the characters in the Dark Horse thing?
The Dark Horse thing was actually written by the same guy who's writing the Star Wars Digest that I'm working on.
His name's Justin Ackland.
And it was, like, sort of a place where you could launch new ideas for comics.
And so, he did something called Shoot First, which is like a paranormal team of, uh, It sounds familiar.
That's because Han did it a lot.
Actually, a funny thing real quick, we'll get right back to that, but, uh, I kept a running tally this time when I was watching Star Wars.
Han shoots first no fewer than six times in that movie.
He just kills folks.
That's his signature move.
He just kills motherfuckers that way throughout that movie.
Well, it's so signature that he does it in Indiana Jones, too.
I mean, that's Harrison Ford.
That's it.
I don't fight anyone.
I don't say I love you and I'll kill you before you get to me.
Which he's a fucking smuggler.
What did they expect him to do?
Yeah.
Okay.
So I've got a question about Sonic the Hedgehog, about drawing Sonic the Hedgehog.
Okay.
Yeah.
Did, did you use the video games for reference?
Oh yeah.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
I'm, uh, pause the screen a lot of times and go, what does he look like when he's doing that spin shit?
Well, luckily I don't have to pause it.
I mean, like I played the game.
I mean, I've played the game since I was like nine.
So like, that's my main influence.
Is the video games and that anything that I can bring from the games more to the comics, I'm definitely interested in doing.
Were you a big man also?
What's that?
Yeah, exactly.
Same thing with Mega Man.
I fucking love Mega Man.
Mega Man.
I did like Mega Man.
I suck balls.
What was your favorite Mega Man game?
What'd you, what was your favorite Mega Man game?
Oh man, my favorite, and this is, uh, this is going to be a little tricky, I guess.
It's actually number eight because it, uh, had some of the coolest visuals and introduced like a lot of animation and stuff.
And like, I don't know.
I'm, I'm, I'm into the idea of the expanded, um, uh, even if it's a slight expanded story.
If you don't mind me asking you a personal question that chicks hate, how old are you?
Oh, I'm 30.
Okay.
Cause I'm, I'm, uh, Mega Man two, I want to say, which is on the, uh, uh, the original Nintendo.
Yeah.
This is what I played the most on.
I think I played Mega Man two the most.
It might've been, I, I, I beat it, which took me like 80 years and a cheat code.
My favorite was actually Mega Man X.
Mega Man X.
Oh, I really enjoyed that.
But, uh, I had a, I had a question about Mega Man.
Now I've forgotten it.
Well, what kind of adventures does, uh, Sonic the Hedgehog get into?
Cause I, I mean, does he have an intense ring adventures?
Like I don't, I don't get what, what he would do in a story.
Uh, the comics are built off of, I mean, they, you know, back in the nineties, they had, uh, two different cartoon shows.
And one of them, um, had little or anything to do, a little, nothing to do, with, uh, with video games.
And they created their own different universe and cast him into it.
That was the one where Sonic really lived off from that place.
Yeah, I remember that.
Sonic ate people.
That's funny.
I remember that cartoon back in the nineties.
I always thought it was, I thought it was a little strange.
It was a fun cartoon.
It was fun, but I was just like, So in those adventures, he like has his own villains and whatnot that he has to do.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, like, you know, at this point, uh, Dr. Eggman is still the main villain, but, um, they've introduced a whole variety of characters over the years.
It's been going for like maybe 15 or more years at this point.
Yeah.
Wow.
That's crazy.
That's so cool, man.
Uh, yeah, I'm pretty happy about it.
So you, you like the, um, I remember my Mega Man question now.
Uh, you're into the expanded, like into expanding the Mega Man story.
Uh, are you familiar at all with the Proto Men?
I know them as a, I mean, like a, when I, I kind of, like I listened to a couple of songs or whatever.
I've never actually sat down to listen to them as, uh, uh, as an experience.
I sort of just like touched on them, I suppose.
Oh man.
Like listening through the second album and then the first album, because the second album is actually a prequel to the first album.
Uh, you get like the best Mega Man story ever.
By the way, this is also how Matt Blackwood proves he is deep gear than all of you motherfuckers out there.
The Proto, the Proto Men, they're a, uh, they're a rock band that does, they perform basically what is a rock opera, uh, all about Mega Man.
Yeah.
And so the first album.
I've heard of them.
I've just never heard any of it.
So the first album basically is kind of like the first Mega Man game.
It's kind of, kind of that, that idea.
And then the second album, they went deeper and they just went backwards and explained where Dr. Light came from and how he ended up being enemies with Wiley and stuff.
It's, oh my goodness.
It sounds, it sounds retarded.
And it's one of those things where I was, do they play metal?
No, it's, it's hard rock.
Uh, but yeah, a friend, uh, a friend, a friend was explaining this to me.
I'm like, that could be the dumbest thing I've ever heard or the greatest thing I've ever heard.
And I went and I saw it live and it's the fucking greatest.
It's amazing.
Check it out.
If you, if you've never seen it before.
What are you working on as far as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
Are you allowed to say?
Uh, yeah.
I mean, at this point, um, the, I'm going to be doing the next four, the upcoming four issues.
It's 17, uh, 18, 19, and 20.
And, uh, I don't think I can, uh, it's about.
Just tell us exactly what happens.
And, uh, how it is.
And, uh, can you also paint a picture so that I can just visualize the art in my head?
Well, I will have to try something a bit different with my art this time.
They, uh, you know, previously it's been all, um, really cartoony, clean, open stuff.
And so this time it's going to be a little bit more, uh, gritty, I suppose is the best word.
Is there, is there violence in the, in the TMNT?
Is it, in, is there like a limb chopping and stuff?
Like in the originals?
I don't think there's anything.
I mean, uh, they're a little, I mean, this, uh, the IDW's take on the Ninja Turtles is exactly what I would be in, or I'm, would have loved if I was in control of it, where you're combining, uh, multiple versions of the Turtles past into one, uh, maybe best take on them.
Okay.
But there is a, there is a level of violence, but it's not like super serious.
Like, I mean, some characters do get killed and I get to draw war.
So there should be some, uh, pretty intense stuff.
That's awesome.
My character's getting killed.
I like war.
Yeah.
This is, you're speaking our language right now.
The one thing I would want to, ask you as a, as an, uh, as an artist, uh, myself, uh, what sort of, everybody asks you what you would tell a young artist starting out, but I'm more interested in what would, uh, what would you advise them in regards to tools?
Like what sort of tools do you use?
And are, I think a lot of artists want to know what pros you use, you know, to do that.
I use a lot of digital stuff.
I bought a Cintiq and that's the single best thing I've ever purchased for producing art.
Say, say that again.
And the Cintiq.
Okay.
Is the single best thing I've ever bought.
It's like a tablet with all kinds of like, uh, correct me if I'm wrong, a tablet with like all kinds of cool plugins.
And yeah, one of the copy, places I copy edited at, they have all the artists there.
I use those.
They're pretty cool.
I wish I could draw so I could play with one.
I missed that a little bit, but it's a tablet.
I mean, it's like a tablet except for it's a monitor.
So you're literally drawing on the monitor.
Oh, wow.
There's no disconnect between looking at a monitor and, and using your hand on the tablet.
Do, do you, do you use different, different styluses or do you just recalibrate like one stylus to be like a brush and to turn into like a really sharp pen or something like that?
Well, I mean, I've been using Photoshop, so you just need one stylus and you'll be, Photoshop provides you with all kinds of different tools that you can flip through instantly.
Cool.
Oh, that is awesome.
So like go through, uh, if you don't mind, and if you're, this doesn't bore the shit out of you, I think it's interesting.
Go through, like if you're going to, about to draw a character, I don't know, throwing a kick, whatever.
Um, what do you, what do you do?
What's the, what's the first, I mean, obviously go through that.
First you got to do a jump kick in the mirror, right?
And you got to hold it in that position.
You got to, you got to levitate.
Yeah.
Sometimes, obviously, uh, if you need, uh, using reference, absolutely.
That's exactly what I would want.
I mean, if I can do it in the mirror, that's fine.
But like, you know, finding photos online or whatever, see how things actually look, uh, is the best first step.
But I mean, if I was drawing this for a comic book, you know, it's going to be one panel of a jump kick.
I'm going to lay out the whole page, just to figure out how to, you know, where that action is going to take place.
And then I would do a small thumbnail, uh, with a, like a scribble, essentially for myself.
And then I would rough out the character.
Like I do a rough path on the character and the environment that they're in.
And then I would keep on cleaning that up over and over.
So in Photoshop, you know, I just create layers where I have a rough and then I.
So you actually erase stuff.
Oh, that's fucking awesome.
Oh, that's cool.
Do you have like a blue line, uh, app or something for, for this antique where you, where you do it in blue line or you just do it with scribbles and you keep erasing layers or, or taking layers?
Um, yeah, I almost never work in blue when I'm drawing.
Uh, if I'm going to ink some, like for Star Wars, I'm drawing it digitally and then I print it out in blue to ink traditionally, you know, just a regular comic book paper.
Uh, so that's the only time I'm actually using blue.
Interesting.
Yeah.
That's photo blue for the non-initiated is, you do your roughs in there and then you, uh, it doesn't show up on photo, uh, copier machines.
So you can do your roughs in blue.
The old school version of that is an actual blue pencil that looks like a blue colored pencil.
Yeah.
That's what Eddie, that's what he has going on over there.
Did you, uh, have you ever gone to a comic cons or cons of any type and, uh, and done sketches and stuff?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, I, uh, for the past couple of years, I've been attending Emerald city up in Seattle.
Cool.
Very regularly.
We're trying to get, uh, comics and comics on that, aren't we?
Yes, we are.
Yeah.
We're, we're, we, we do a nerd comedy and we're trying to get into that, that, that comic con and, uh, do, uh, an actual panel where we tell jokes that are nerdy for, for fanboys.
Wait, what comic con?
Which one at the Emerald city?
Yeah.
Oh, okay.
Well, that'd be interesting to see how that thing goes over.
Yeah.
We've done, we've done, uh, we did kamikaze.
Ed's done the actual comic con, which was like killer, right?
I mean, it was really cool.
We, uh, we did it on the floor.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That must've been, that must've been kind of nuts though.
Yeah, we did.
Sex.
Is there any competition with such a thing like that?
Or are you guys the only one, uh, offering that sort of show?
No, there's no competition.
And you tell everybody that.
There's a very tiny bit of competition, but we are, I mean, and I'm not saying this to be cocky, but we're the best.
We really are though.
We, we're some of the few guys who do it, who actually love comics and love, uh, the nerd stuff and have a, a knowledge enough, a, a base of knowledge that's so good.
That, that everyone gets what we're saying and they appreciate how nerdy we are.
We have a comment question.
But we're still funny.
Go ahead.
Uh, Ben mentioned, this is from, uh, Matthew Rocko, Rocko.
Matthew Rocko?
Yeah.
Okay.
He's my roommate.
Oh, okay.
Hello, Matthew.
Uh, Ben mentioned Ninja Turtle Comics.
Any thoughts on the upcoming Michael Bay produced Ninja Turtle films where the turtles are re-envisioned as an alien race of creatures?
I know it ain't greenlit anymore.
Yeah.
That shit got shut the fuck down.
Just, but any thoughts on that?
Who's more powerful?
You or like, all of us?
Go fuck yourself, Michael Bay.
on that, uh, as a, uh, retcon of their origin?
How did you, stupid.
How did you feel about it, Ben?
Uh, you know, I guess, um, initially, obviously there's gonna be like, uh, some shock I suppose to it.
I think that I would be open to, I mean, that's just what the, their, I don't know, the Ninja Turtles have been reinvented so many times.
I'd be open to see if the thing had value or not.
You know, whether it did, I mean, it'd have to prove itself.
Okay.
I mean, just give them like, you know, $200 million and, uh, see what it does.
Two years of, uh, a lot of people's time and money and effort and stuff like that.
And just, you know, just see how we like it.
And then just see how much, so much slow-mo.
My, my biggest problem with it is, how can you call it Ninja Turtles if it's aliens?
Then, then it's, I mean, if it's aliens who are shaped like turtles, don't you have to say Ninja aliens who are shaped like turtles?
They are neither ninjas, turtles, mutants, or teenagers.
But you're going to call it Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
It's still going to be called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
So why don't you call it, uh, aliens?
Well, I mean, I would call it Howard the Duck.
No, I would see them being able to, I mean, honestly, I, my thought was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is one of the main things I draw all the time.
Yeah.
Uh, are so ridiculous.
they don't have noses.
It makes it so much easier.
Well, it's so, but they're so ridiculous that making them aliens doesn't do anything to harm the property really.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I mean, it's so ridiculous.
And plus, other alien planets could have turtles.
Yeah.
Right?
Well, and also you could just say, Hey, these aliens look like turtles.
I mean, if you really wanted to push it.
What it shows is a complete disregard for any idea that anybody has of the Ninja Turtles.
Yeah.
It's not trying to take what it is and make it cool.
It's trying to fucking change it because it's not cool.
It's saying, this isn't cool.
You know, it would be cool if it was this instead.
And, you're already starting off saying, Oh, fuck this thing.
This thing doesn't have merit on its own.
We, we know what has merit.
And it's the same thing.
Why, uh, rise of the silver surfer was such a shitty fucking movie.
Uh, okay.
Take away the bad writing, but apart from that, like the, uh, Galactus turning Galactus into a big fucking cloud.
It's like, look, Galactus in the comic books.
Back me up here, Ben Galactus in the comic books lasted for 50 fucking years.
And still looks the same because even though it's an absurd, weird thing, a giant dude in a pointy purple suit is it's fucking bad-ass.
It's weird, but it's bad-ass.
And he's looming over the earth about to eat the fucking thing.
And this tiny little guy, something really cool about it that we love combats him.
And then, and he does it because he loves the human race.
Eventually every single time they go, Oh, that's silly.
Let's change that.
And they do it with Superman suit too.
Every fucking time.
And they do it with everything.
That's my big spider.
One of my big Spider-Man things is like, why did we put the bad guy in a power Ranger outfit?
Every few years, we change the Spider-Man costume.
Every few years, they change everybody's costume.
And it's like, guess what?
The one that lasted 30 years that we keep going back to.
There's a reason something was good about that.
It's stuck.
The ones, the costumes that didn't last from the sixties.
We don't even remember the names of those fucking characters anymore.
Yep.
Simple as that.
All right.
We covered that.
What would be your dream project, man?
I mean, I already kind of lived out my dream of drawing the Ninja turtles.
Oh my God.
I want to talk to you about the Ninja turtles all day, but we can't.
So, uh, what would be your dream project?
Like something that is just, wow.
I, if I ever got to do this, I would just either shit my pants because I don't know if I could handle it, but I'd be super excited about it.
Like what would that be?
Yeah, it's tough because it's like, um, I mean, at this point, like I've worked on, uh, all the, you know, the property that I loved as a kid.
So I think like, I think that the only like next, you know, big dream that I would want is if I created something myself and put it out into the world that's successful.
Like that would be the, uh, the real proof, I guess.
Like a why the last man type of.
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Any kind of, or, you know, like Hellboy or something like that.
Yeah.
Throwing out what you want and, uh, ending up, uh, obviously having the world love what you do.
If you decide to end up doing that and kickstarting it, you should definitely come back.
I'll be your kickstarter.
Oh, okay.
Well, cool.
Yeah.
Let us know.
And I should say thanks a lot.
I should probably take off at this point.
I'll let you guys get back to finishing up your show, but I appreciate the opportunity to get on here and talk about stuff.
Oh, absolutely, man.
That was great, man.
Thank you, Ben.
We would talk to you for like hours.
Well, plug, uh, plug your, uh, your blog for your art or, or whatever you got any blogs or your website.
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And so I ended up with debates.
All right.
Sounds good.
Like that game.
Thanks, man.
Thank you.
That was a great guest.
That was cool, huh?
I know.
Don't you want to thank Don for that?
Thank you, Don.
Thank you, Don.
Just have him do drawings for us.
Yeah, that'd be fucking bad ass.
Matt, thanks.
Oh my God.
He could draw the four of us as the Ninja Turtles.
Oh my God.
We got to find out how much that costs and go pay him to do that.
Yes.
Okay.
Sorry, Don.
You weren't here.
I was like, fuck that.
Yeah.
Can I be Casey Jones?
Oh, fuck.
Yeah.
You are Casey Jones, motherfucker.
Okay.
I want to read a couple of things that Eric Barnes had to say.
Eric Barnes had a, first off, he says Matt Blackwood is correct about Proto Men and their awesome opus.
So he's got your back on that.
But then this one, which is actually something I wanted to mention, a random shout out to the Gendy Tartakovsky Clone Wars micro series between the final two movies.
The micro series was awesome.
The micro series.
Yeah.
Not the, not the Clone Wars.
Clone Wars.
The micro series.
The one where you get to see how badass Mace Windu actually is.
Yeah.
Cause he's fucking.
Which why they couldn't have Sam Jackson do that movie.
It's just action.
It's just Jedi being badass.
It's just Jedi being badasses.
But on top of that, there was a little bit of love story in it and it's all buyable.
It's all like, he's just him hugging her and being like, I miss you.
Well, cause Gendy's an amazing storyteller.
Yeah, exactly.
Like the story, I would have rather literally seen the story in that mini series than any of the movies they did.
Oh yeah.
Um, so we all agree with you on that.
Eric Bynes, you know, as usual, we added that in, we'd probably have a hundred percent of a movie.
Yeah.
Three movies make one good movie.
Three movies in a micro series make one good movie.
We should find out if Topher Grace put the, uh, put the, the Clone Wars cartoon in the, in the, that would be fucking awesome.
All right.
Well, we, we have to, we have to get it sussed out though.
We're not going to have this show, uh, not sussed out.
So, okay.
So between me, I vote for, we're between four and five, right?
Yeah.
I'm going to go with number one, Empire Strikes Back, because even though it's a setup movie, honestly, it's the only one of those that I could envision.
Just, I understand the first one.
I understand how stupid this sounds, but it's the only one that I can just watch and just watch it.
I can watch it starting at any point.
I can watch it starting at Hoth.
I can start it.
I could watch it at Dagobah.
I could watch it from the fight scene between Darth Vader and him to the end of it.
I, I just love it.
I love it.
I saw it when it was re-released in the theaters.
I saw it like five times.
It's genius.
When I watch Star Wars, I get super fucking bored about 10 minutes in.
Interesting.
And I just stop liking it about 40 minutes in, and then it gets interesting for like five minutes, and then it's over, and I'm happy.
I'm like, I'm not even going to watch the first one.
I just, and then, and then returning to Jedi.
So you actually don't like, you actually don't like New Hope.
I, I kind of don't.
Do you like it better than Jedi?
He gets bored with it.
I think it has a little bit of 70s pacing.
Which he hates.
Yeah.
And I, and I, and I think Luke is such a fucking douche.
Yeah.
That I just can't do it.
I've been with New Hope the entire time.
Yeah.
At least, at least in, I don't feel that at all.
I don't feel you guys on that.
I mean, I, I guess you have.
He gets his shit together at the end, but for an hour and 20 minutes, he's just this douche.
You have to put a douche bag bio suit on to watch that fucking movie.
No.
Like I have to defend myself from the douche-atronics coming out of my screen.
He's a teenager, he's a teenager, and to be fair, his uncle is being unreasonable.
He told him last year that he could go at the end of the year, and then he's telling him that again, after Harvest, again?
Seriously, man.
That is pretty shitty.
Yeah.
I agree with that on that one.
But it also has a bunch of gaps in it though.
Imagine, imagine if you're, if you're 19, imagine if you're 19, and you were gonna go to college when you were 18, and they're like, maybe next year, buddy.
It's not unreasonable for you to be like, I'm gonna go buy power converters, because I just can't take your shit right now.
I get his parents being, or his step parents, whatever.
Aunt and uncle.
Being, you know, rude to him or whatever, and I get that.
I get the teen angst of it and everything.
I forgot that he was 19, because he looks like he's 40.
And he was raised by his aunt and uncle.
We're lucky he's not in jail.
But just show some fucking backbone.
And it has all those gaps, Tom, Tom Frank's classic bit, where fucking Obi-Wan Kenobi comes by and he goes, oh, this precision, only, uh, sand people couldn't have shot this well.
This must be the work of imperial stormtroopers.
They miss all the time.
They miss all the time.
They miss the entire time.
I mean, look at Return of the Jedi.
They can't shoot Ewoks.
I was watching them.
It's just insane how much they miss.
So it's like, it's, there's so many gaps that I just, I just don't like it.
And, and the whole, the whole, the whole thing about Obi-Wan Kenobi is like, think, use the force.
It's like, what is it?
Think or don't think?
What do I have to do to use the force effectively, Obi-Wan Kenobi?
Because you say two different fucking things.
You know what I mean?
I just, ugh.
Just react.
I don't, man, Obi-Wan Kenobi's a fucking cock sucker, man.
Don't just react.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a cock sucker.
He's an ornery old man.
They don't show that.
It's just implied.
He chopped off Homeboy's fucking arm for no reason.
I don't like you.
Chop.
That guy was trying to kill him.
No, he shot, that guy.
Because that dude was getting ready to blast people.
He's getting, that dude's getting ready to blast people.
That guy took a part, had the death sentence on eight systems.
12.
12 systems.
He could have taken apart Homeboy's gun with his mind, but he chose to chop his arm off like a douche.
Because those people need to be shown explicitly.
You can't, you can't be subtle.
You can't force shove somebody.
He's just going to get up and keep coming at you.
It goes against everything that the Jedi do.
Also, I guess you're probably not supposed to force shove anyone when you're supposed to be no Jedi.
The Jedi just chop people's arms off willy nilly.
They wouldn't have got their fucking ass kicked.
That's all I got to say.
Maybe Obi-Wan has finally learned that lesson.
What do you mean got their ass kicked?
And that's why.
What do you mean in those imaginary movies that never happened?
Is that what you're talking about?
Exactly.
All I'm saying is, Empire is the best one.
It's the best written.
It's the best acted.
It's the best directed by far.
By far it's the best directed.
Empire, Empire.
You know what?
My problem with that is that it's like, you know, you're, you love depressing shit.
I like Empire the best too.
Empire is by far the best directed.
I agree with Ed on that one.
I, this is, this is how I feel about it.
I agree with you.
I agree with you.
This is how I feel about it.
When I was young, when I was a kid, Return of the Jedi was by far my favorite.
My favorite too.
Oh, cause it still is.
Of course, it had Leia in a slave outfit and it had little fuzzy animals.
They win the whole thing.
You love Jabba, you gotta love that whole Jabba the Hutt sequence.
All of that.
Where she escapes from Jabba, it's badass.
I fucking loved the Ewoks.
Of course, you were a child.
Cause you were a kid.
You're like, my teddy bears bears are coming to save my ass.
You know?
It's like Ted, but he doesn't drink or get paid.
Just a bunch of teds.
They just, also, implied but not shown.
Those little tiny cutesy teddy bears are ripping apart stormtroopers.
Yeah.
I mean, they're totally killing them like Cannibal Holocaust style.
They're like just ripping them to shreds.
Anyway, much cooler when you think about it that way.
Yeah.
But, that was my favorite when I was a kid.
And then as I grew older and as I became an angry teenager, I was like, oh, fuck this man.
No, Empire, that's the real shit.
Cause that's how it ends.
Cause it's dark and I'm emo.
That's how it ends.
That's how it ends.
I'm a little bit of a fan of Empire.
I'm a little bit of a fan of Empire.
I'm a little bit of a fan of Empire.
That's what life is, man.
It ends with you getting your hand cut off.
And some guy saying that he's your dad.
He didn't even know your fucking dad.
And then some black guy comes in and tells you that he's your real father.
That's what life is.
And then, I loved that it was a downer.
I loved that at that time.
And, like just the older I, eventually I just realized, oh, I like Star Wars the best.
Like this, the original Star Wars is just the best movie, standalone for sure.
I mean, I was gonna say, you can give the one argument about Star Wars is that it ends with a specific way and it's an ending.
Right.
And it's not meant.
Only because he didn't know that he was gonna be able to make the other two.
No, but that's what's perfect about it is it was never meant for that.
It has a little Matrix 1 to it.
It has a little Matrix 1 to it where it actually ends.
Yeah, it has a little Matrix 1 to it where it ends and you see that that was the graduation of the idea.
All the ideas are graduated properly.
But I just feel like in, in Empire, the graduation of the Jedi idea is all the rest of those movies.
If Empire didn't do well and the explaining of how dope a Jedi training is and how dope all that stuff is, it wouldn't, I don't think the franchise would be what it is today.
Cosigned.
True, but I think we're gonna have to do this.
I think this is what we're gonna have to do.
No, we're not gonna delay it to another episode.
No, no, we're not gonna delay it.
I think what we're gonna have to do is we're gonna have to agree that New Hope and Empire are around a basic tie.
Yeah.
I think that's what we're gonna have to do.
And that Return of the Jedi, even though I still like it the best and it will never change my mind, I've been outvoted, I will accept that and I will say that that, that is gonna be the fourth worst.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Or third best, whatever you wanna say.
Say third best.
I think third best is better.
Third best is more accurate, I think.
When you become a teenager and go through your goth phase, then you'll agree with Ed and go with the, with Empire.
I never went through a goth phase, that's the thing.
The prequels are terrible movies.
The original trilogy, none of them are bad movies.
No.
Yeah.
I told you guys last, I don't know if I said it on the podcast, but last week, I rewatched them a week ago.
I rewatched them all, I shared them with my girlfriend the first time.
Like about a monthly basis.
Yeah.
But they completely held up.
I was shocked at how much they held up.
And the effects, the effects really held up.
Even if you watch the unenhanced versions, which I only, those are the only ones I watch, I refuse to watch the unenhanced.
When they came out with the DVD set that was the special edition and it was a second disc.
On the second disc, yeah, that best buy.
That is the, the most technologically advanced copy of those movies that will probably ever.
Ever, yeah.
So if you don't have that, Go get it.
Go out and find it before they're all gone because that's all you're gonna have.
Yep.
So okay, we're gonna agree on a tie for those last two, which kind of sucks, but I can't see us actually coming to a real agreement.
We got two minutes left, so we wanna preview a little bit about what we're gonna talk about next week, which is gonna be the five top black superheroes.
Hopefully we can find five top black superheroes.
Well, yeah, and I've been doing some research.
Somebody said Obama online.
Yeah, some said Obama, he was in the Spider-Man.
Which, bully for you for thinking outside the box.
Yeah, I think someone's just being a smart ass up in this, because they also said Jazz and, and, Oh yeah, Jazz was the name from Transformers.
Yeah, Breakout or whatever, Beatbox, what the fuck racist ass names.
What the fuck racist names.
Oh, Ghetto Blaster.
Ghetto Blaster, yeah, it was Blaster, Ghetto Blaster, Ghetto Blaster, which is pretty much the same as Beatbox, let's be honest.
And then that one of them transforms into a Popeye's chicken, and you're like, what the fuck is this?
This is fucked up.
And, and, and I did some interesting research about like, there was, there's some black characters that are like, whoa, like you almost wish that they had never been made.
There was one called Whiteout.
Okay.
Yeah.
It's like that movie White Dog with.
Yeah, so, okay, so it's gonna be a fun conversation.
That might take up the whole con, the whole.
That should be, that should be a fun conversation.
Yeah, that's gonna be a fun conversation.
Yeah, that's gonna be a fun conversation.
That should, we should be able to take up most of it with that.
If not, we'll talk about the Justice League.
I cannot wait to hear Bruce Jingles take on that.
We can table that for whenever we need it.
I can't wait to hear Bruce Jingles take on that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'll just be like, I'd like the classic Coon Man from 1937.
That's what I grew up with.
You gotta admit though, the stories in Coon Man were.
Yeah, I love Coon Man.
What is it?
His watermelon utility belt.
It was awesome.
He dropped the seeds and everybody slipped.
Yeah, I get that.
Yeah, I love Coon Man.
I love Coon Man.
I love Coon Man.
I love Coon Man.
