Was it somebody who, you know, reached back out for you and pulled you up? Or did you just start your thing and then just, you know, that's the heart that you got that you want to reach back out and help somebody? So, how'd you get started? Here's how I started. And here's what I do. Here's what I do to help others. In the 80s, like probably around 82, I started DJing. All right. Going to parties. We're going to pause right there. So, you got a love for music initially. I grew up with the music in my house, like, for real. Okay. So, the parents bumping it on Saturday, on Sundays. And all those old school. And daddy got every record there is. Every time one comes out, he goes, get two. We only had one. He had a turntable, but he had double copies probably. So, if he messed up one, he'd still have one. Yeah. Because it always fascinates me how people, you know, fall in love with music. My dad would not have a moment in the house or the car that the music wasn't playing. That's what I'm talking about. And so, when hip hop started, I wanted to do that. And he, my dad would give me the records to play. He bought me a turntable, a stereo system for Christmas one year. And he would give me a few records to play. And I used to ask him to play. He'd play his records so much that he told me, I'm going to start giving you an allowance. He saved that. And you go buy your own records. Ain't that something. So, anytime I saved up enough money to buy a record, I'd say, I need to go to the store. And he'd take me. And it just carried over. And so, I started throwing parties. And while I'm throwing parties, at the age of 13, I'm coming home with these big old knots of money. My mother was, you know, was my manager. I had to fire her. Manager. Yeah. So, it just. It just gradually went from there to me saying. And y'all have been playing a record called Hustler's Eye by me. Right, right, right. That tells this story. It's a real story. And one day I was playing the records at the party. And I was just like, I can do this. I can make these records. Right, right, right, right. And so, I started kind of like messing around trying to find out what sounds were in. Because I'm not trained on instruments. So, I had to find out what the guitar was. I had to find out what the bass was. Right. And when I did, we started putting these songs together. No, go ahead. We started putting these songs together. And, you know, one thing led to another. When I started writing songs, then I started making songs. And I got into groups that didn't work out. And before you know it, man. Okay. I had to. I'm sorry, go ahead. Now, when you started writing these songs, I mean, you know, did you just pretty much, you know, open up a blank notebook and got a pen in your hand and said, okay. No. And this is what I'm about to say. This is how everybody that starts rapping. Should be rapping. Every professional that I know, including the D.O.C., did the same thing. And we didn't even know each other when we started writing. D.O.C. We take the songs that are our favorite and change the words. You know, so my song was a Run DMC song. Rock Box. Okay. No. It was either Rock Box or Sucker MCs. Most likely Sucker MCs. So, I write the same pattern to the same beat they wrote to and just change the words into my own thing. LL Cool J. I need a beat and all that. We did all that same thing. And then you learn, by doing that, you learn what their technique was and their approach was to the writing. And then you start writing your own stuff. Right. Right. And, man, I got so good at it that by the time I decided I wanted to come out here to L.A. to mess with the music scene, Dr. Dre and all of them already knew who I was. That's dope. So, we all hooked up. I got a group out here and we got signed a priority on the strength that we were. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. So, we would do this album with Dr. Dre. Now, so they reached out to you. Before you touched down in L.A., they reached out to you. I don't mean Shug, god. Matter of fact, it was crazy. It was almost faded because me and my people were leaving Dallas the night the guy that Shug sent for us made it to our studio. Wow. So, we were already packed and leaving. And so, we were like, man, this is supposed to happen. Right, right, right. So, when I got out here, man, Shug had me. Not only was I working with Dre and NWA, I was working with the Jacksons, the whole family. That's what I mean. That's wild, man. I've done a lot of work with people here. And we're going to perform them full tilt, but I'm going to show you how most people perform them, and ideally what we need for the greater range. This is a chest exercise, and it is one of the most effective, but again, as we know, push-ups are your single greatest exercise. It's just not the greatest challenging exercise for the chest. Yeah, so it's not their fault that they got put on. It's some executive's fault, you know, because they shouldn't have got a shot. They should have been groomed, you know. Yeah. Yeah. They should have been shaped, and they should have been guided, and they weren't. So I hear a lot of stuff that's not my flavor. Yeah. But I try not to knock them much, you know. I try—I sure ain't going to play it in my car. Yeah. But I try not to give harsh opinions about people's stuff because it's like I've been doing it so long. They're not the first time. They're not the first wave of crap rappers that come along. Exactly. They'll all— They'll all get weeded out. I really like that answer right there. Go ahead and put it out there because sooner or later what they say, the cream rises to the top. Right. You know, there's only so long that somebody's going to want to do this dance over here. You know, then at the end of it, then when it's all said and done, your song still has substance. It still has meaning. It still has flavor. And somebody's going to pick it up. So we have to all as a community of real musicians just keep on doing it. Like, you just got to keep on putting it out there. You got to do your shows. You got to go shake those hands.
