Thank you. I'm scared. We're still here. Got calm. Everyone is there from the 7 to 9 p.m. Piñata Hour. Check, check, check it. One, check it. One, two, one, two. Bend up. What's up? This is Lee here with Piñata Hour. You guys like my posters I just made? I just noticed it. Black and white, man. Black and white. Keep it simple. That's how I see everything. Black and white. Black and white right now. Colorblind. Yeah. So I want to welcome everybody to Piñata Hour here with Lee, your host, and Frank LePaul. He's going to throw some mixes. He's going to surprise me. I don't know. What do you have in mind? A little rage. A little rage. Against the machine. Yeah? Has it got to do with this down the street right here? I don't know. Because I've been to one of those. Yeah. I've been to one of those. I've been to the one that raged against the machine one day. Against the Democrats. Oh, yeah. I was there, too. Yeah. Hey, their mics are on? Yeah? I want to welcome two of the members of Aparato, right? Hey, hola. What's going on? Kat is not here yet. She's landing from Anaheim. I guess there are helicopters or something happening. She should be here. She's coming from Santa Ana, so. Oh, shit. Yeah. She'll make it. Right now, LA is kind of crazy right now. Yes, it is. I'm away, and I saw like three helicopters, and then I saw another one coming. Just like going around. Traffic's fucked up. I just came directly from City Hall right now and saw. Really? Yeah, three different. What were you doing there? Getting married? Yeah, I was getting married. Elvis was marrying me on the west steps of the occupation. And what's your name? What about you? Vanessa. Vanessa. Vanessa. I like your guitarron. Guitarron, yes. My baby. Nice. That's your baby? Sí. How old is your baby? This guy was made in 2003. What's his name? His name is Bobby, actually. Bobby. Bobby. Yeah, the maker is Roberto Morales, so his name is Bobby. Way to go, Bobby. Yeah, Bobby. Kyle, where are you? ¿Dónde estás? He's missing. I hope it's a little in, because that guy downstairs is kind of crazy. He's like, where are you going? ¿Dónde vas? Yeah, where are you going? ¿Dónde vas? There's no one down there. Yeah, there's a security. Oh, you got lucky. He's like, ¿Dónde vas? Hold on a second. Where are you going? Yeah. He just looked at me. He says, 810. Al estudio. Oh, really? Yeah. He told me the same thing. 810. I'm like, 810. He's like, all right. So, yeah, we're waiting for Harry. We're going to have Frank LePoel do a little intro mix here. And so, what's new out there right now? Nothing, man. Anything crazy? Occupy LA. Santa Ana wins. I know. That's all the shit blowing in. You know, December, tomorrow, Christmas again. Oh, man. Shopping, you know. Pressure. Yes. You had to get a lot of gifts? Nah, man. My kids are old. Well, yeah, they're expensive. Electronics and stuff. Yeah. My oldest is 18, so. Shit. Yeah. I don't got those. Not yet. Yeah. So. Anyway. So, we're waiting for Kat to get here. And then we're going to do a little intro and see what's up. For you guys, what's new? Are you guys playing anytime soon? Yeah. Stuff like that. Yeah. So, we're going to let Frank LePaul lose. You ready, man? Yeah. All right. So, we're going to come back. And hopefully, he'll be here by then. Vamos. Vamos. Vamos. Vamos. Vamos. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. Thank you. Check one, two, and we're back. Tres, cuatro. This is Piñata, our podcast here at SkinnerStudios.com, and we have a cat. Hey, hey, hey. Oh, there's your headset here. Try it, see if it works. Traffic was very quick on L.A., man. We can bring it to you. Don't be afraid. Jumped on top of the table, ladies and gentlemen. It's good to see you, Lee. Awesome studio. Nice to see you. Yeah, this is a new place right here. It's nice to meet you. Are you like the white walls? It's good to see her. It's like a lot of people back there, too. Hands up. All right, hey, before I get to you guys, I just want to mention a few things here. Tonight, they're going to have a comedy show at the Homeroom, and that's right here at 3121 Beverly Boulevard. It's a new art space called Homeroom, and they're going to have a bunch of comedians there. They're calling it Comedy, Cult, and Weirdness, and it's hosted by Walt. He's a pretty cool guy. Cool. He's going to have a bunch of comedians. Maybe you guys might. You might not know, but, you know, like underground. It's like musicians, but they want to, you know, they're funny. I'm going to go there tonight. I'm going to go check it out. Sweet. Coolness. So if you guys are listening, try to go there. Homeroom. You can just look at it on Facebook or Google Homeroom in Los Angeles. Okay. I'll have to check it out because I need laughter in my life right now. We need lots of laughter. We need the funnies. Yeah, that's why I do this show, so we can all laugh for like two hours. You guys are already smiling and sweating. Nice. That was a nice set, Frankl Bull. Gracias. So, you know, I've been getting a lot of emails from different bands. It's like, hey, can you play my stuff? Can you play my music? So I'm going to do this for the first time. Well, I've done it, you know, I've been doing it, but like I picked, let me see, about seven or eight bands here. Cool. So we're going to go first. They're local. We're going to go first with a band called The Terrorist. The Terrorist. Oh, my God. The Terrorist. What do they do? Terroristas. And then there's one guy. I think he's from Argentina. But anyway, so let's hear how this one goes. Terroristas. Terroristas. Terroristas. Terroristas. Terroristas. Terroristas. I'm leaving all the lies to be undone I love my friend, she's really hot I have to tell her to stay away I'm leaving all the lies to be undone But they don't listen, they keep hitting on us Gotta keep her back, you know Me and I do, but I don't leave her Well, my friend, the guy that made this move Me and the girl, the guy that found out That there was something that was out there She likes to do it, she likes to fuck around But the biggest problem is the rotation They say, shoot it out Me and the girl, the guys do Me and the girl, the guys do Me and the girl, the guys do Shoot it up! My baby don't like to Shoot it up! Stealing money from the second child Making cheats to punish her Because my baby, she won't think I tried at all She'll go to town and satisfy her vice And say, Shoot it up! My baby don't like to Shoot it up! My baby don't like to Shoot it up! My baby don't like to Shoot it up! Shoot it up, shoot it down My baby, she blew every pill She threw down Shoot it, shoot it, shoot it down Shoot it up! My baby don't like to Shoot it up! Shoot it up! My baby don't like to Shoot it up! Shoot it up! Shoot it up Shoot it up Shoot it up Shoot it up Shoot it up Shoot it up Shoot it up Shoot it up Shoot it up All right, let's go, Mettis. We're talking about these guys. I got here, Kat. I got, uh, Vanessa, Vanessa, for sure, Alexandro, what's your name again, sir? Francisco, Francisco. Si. So that was Los Comentos. What do you guys, you guys like those? Yeah, they sound pretty good. Yeah, pretty cool. We're going to have to play a show with them. Yeah, you should. They're from Long Beach. Down the street from... Down the street. Down the street. Down the street. Down the 710. So up next, this is a band called Def. The name of the song is Love Later. Check it out. Love Later. Love Later. Love Later. Love letters from you, girl. Love song. It's been twice. It's the roadside song. And finding you broke you. Love song. I can't feel no light. Love song. These love letters from you, girl. Love song. Love song. Okay, so that's Def. D-E-A-F. D-E-A-F. Everybody. D-E-A-F. Sort of. Yeah. You know what I noticed here, too? They're going to be playing El Salvadorano Saturday, December the 10th with Sketch Monster. And who else? Who's going to play with them? I like that. So that's enough for Def. So they're going to play with Sketch Monster's Thwart of Fatima, right? Yeah, something like that. I'm going to play their music, too. And El Salvador? El Salvadorino. That's over there in the seat of industry. I was like, what the hell? Chivo. Yeah. Hell no. Yeah, so the next band I'm going to play here, it's called Backseat Bingo. I don't know if you guys are aware of them, but they're from L.A. The name of the song they call is I Just Might. Cool. Let's see what they're talking about. This is the best, one of the seven local bands I picked. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay.. Luring stare Oh, I'm aware Tongue on teeth You're so chic Up and down And all around Back and tight I just might I see you there So tempting I don't know what you're trying to do Don't know what about you To find me Not I just Might I just Might Maybe I will I don't know All right Here I come Here I come Here I come Here I come I just Might I just Might Try it Try it Try it Try it They also, I think they're going to be releasing an EP very soon. That's what they're working on. That's what it looks like. Up next, we got, what do we got here? We got Manhattan Murder Mystery. I've been wanting to play with this band for years. You want to? I've been wanting, since Mystery Hangup Day. They're cool cats. I know Matthew Teardrop. Make it happen, Lee. I'm going to make your dreams come true. Thank you. Yes, yes. Yeah, so these guys, apparently they have a residency at the satellite. It used to be Spaceland. Spaceland. Now it became the satellite. It's still called Spaceland, man. It's still in the universe, apparently. Spaceland. It was a joke. Nobody got it. Okay. So we're going to play this song called I Always Think About Dying. Not me. That's Manhattan Murder right here. All right. I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying The cops shot his last light on you He asked what the hell is wrong with you You hadn't spoken in so long You almost forgot how to talk I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying Dying Dying Dying Dying I need somebody to fix my life There were some nights when I dumped you and my wife I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying about dying about dying I always think I always think I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying I always think about dying people out there who need some production work also. It's a good year. Moises Paquero. Did you guys make it to the Los Abandoned show? Yes. Oh, my God. It was an awesome show. Pilar Diaz was just amazing on stage, and her voice was just, yeah, I loved it. It was good. It's a great place, the Echoplex. Yeah, it was a great turnout. It was about 600 people that were there, and I was ultra happy to finally see them. I saw some clips of it, like Ricky's been putting out. Yeah. It was just bananas. It's good, man. Because that band has got that punk going. Pretty good. Yeah. So, Aparato, what are the master plans for you guys? What are you guys going to be, besides releasing? Do you guys want to go on tour? Do you guys want to? Yeah, definitely. We're going to be going on tour. We're going to go all the way to New York, right? And back. And back. Yeah, have to come back. Definitely want to hit up back home San Antonio and Austin. Yeah. Yeah, stop at Austin. Definitely. Yeah. That's a good place. Out on 6th Street. Yeah. And then hit up a couple of places in Mexico. Are you guys going to try to go to the South by Southwest, maybe? Oh, yeah. It's coming up. Yeah, South by Southwest. Oh, God. Yeah, we applied to it. Yeah, we submitted our material. So hopefully, you know, I think we're going to hear from them, or people that, you know, made it. We'll hear from them in January. In January, yeah. For those who don't know, but I know Cat for a while, right? Yeah, a long time. From her other bands. Yeah. I remember those skate park shows. Oh, yeah. Yeah, in Baldwin Park. That's crazy. Good attendance. Good kids came by. Yeah, it was a lot of fun. It was cool. I liked it. Right spot to, you know, throw a gig. Skate park, can't go wrong. No, you can't. Yeah. That was Mr. Hangup. That was Mr. Hangup back in the day, yeah. How long has it been then? It's like seven, eight years? Seven. How long was Mr. Hangup around? For a while. Yeah, we were around for... Four or five years, six years? Yeah. Four or five years. Four or five years. Four or five years. Yeah. Yeah, I think, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, since like the 1970s. Hey, talking about the 70s, I'm going to be... I'm going to play a game with you guys. I'm going to be playing some music and see if you guys recognize. Oh, snap. Ah, okay. A little game, see if you get it. Well, we got our ethnomusicologist here, so... Oh, really? Oh, uh-oh. Well... Okay, what do you do? Like... Well, I... I... I always say I have two lives. I have the life as a musician, the life as someone running away from the cops at Occupy LA. Okay, no, that's three lives. And my other, my third life also, in no sequential order of hierarchy, is as a graduate student at UCLA. I study ethnomusicology, getting my Ph... My Ph. Dizzle. Ph. Dizzle. Dizzle. Dizzle. Well, so you say you were telling me earlier you were... Telling me earlier you were coming from Occupy LA? Were you there? Can you give me some info? Can you report to us? This is the report back. Actually, Vanessa and I were there last night, and I literally just came back from the site, from City Hall, just now before the show came in. I was actually rushing back. I'm like, all right, before the imminent threat of being arrested comes up again, I'm gonna make my way over to Pina Tower. But yeah, it was... But yeah, it was a crazy situation last night. About 1,400 LAPD just surrounding the entire area. It felt like we were definitely under siege. We were all trapped in. Get ready for this. Yeah. Vanessa wants to say anything about her experience there as well. It was scary. I mean, so many police officers, and they weren't just dressed as a normal police officer. Some, they get a rush out of it, and some they're like, oh, I think I better go home. Just watch it through. No, but if you don't do anything, nothing's gonna happen to you. They can't attack you. They can't... Yeah. But I've been watching videos. They don't care. Well, I mean, I'm talking about the ones that are really on the front. You know what I mean? If you're like two or three blocks, it's like whatever. But if you're on the front, you're gonna get paper sprayed, kicked. You know, like the Rodney King riot, when that happened. It was totally different. I mean, the whole city just... That shit was crazy. It was just... I remember driving home in the one thing, and I saw a big ball of fire. Yeah. Oh my gosh. Came down the freeway, and it started bouncing. And I was like maybe about a mile away from it, and I was like, what is that stuff? Everybody hit the brakes, everybody stopped, everybody started going out. That was scary. That was crazy. What was it? It was the... The Rodney King? The Rodney King riot. Oh my gosh. 1992? Yeah. I was like 17. Were you here? 17. But I was part of the numbskulls that were out there goofing around. It happened around 1 or 2 PM. Right after the sentence or something. Yeah. It just... It happened right away. Of the cops. Yeah. All those cops, yeah. It started out of Florence and Normandy. Occupy, huh? Yeah. Yeah. It's that shit everywhere. It's really... We have to put into perspective in comparison to the rest of the country that LA is a unique site, considering that the police weren't... Yeah. The police weren't as physically violent. A lot of people are respecting that. They're like, oh, let's see if... What's the history of the LAPD? Whether they were hunting down Black Panthers in the 1970s to Rodney King and certain instances, even them rushing into the barrios, just constantly attacking brown people here in LA. Yeah. It's scary that... Yeah. They have history and then having to face them last night, they were fully armed. Everything from an automatic, not automatic, but the... Yeah. They got those fake bullets. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. They have their guns. arrested and also a photographer was arrested. Right. But overall, about 200 people were arrested. It's just going to cost about $200,000 to get all of them out, bail them out. Yeah. They're not just going to let them go. They need to get bailed out. Yeah. I mean, they're getting booked, you know, all that. I think it's $5,000 bail, which I think sometimes trickles down to $500. But still, nonetheless, it's a lot of money, especially considering the situation in this country right now. Instead of them paying the bailout, they should just get those guys to go and do their landscaping at the city hall. Like, you know, work on the grass. And they will break even. Right? But that's how much it's going to cost to fix all the grass, all the damage. There is no grass anymore. It's just dirt. Yeah, no, there's not. It's dirt. So, like, imagine. That's really expensive. Just to do gardening. I mean, in front of your home, it's like a couple, a thousand sometimes, over a thousand. Well, no one can go in. It's completely barricaded now. Oh, yeah, yeah. Right now, it looks like, yeah, like a third world country. Yeah. It's surrounded by police again. As I left, there were about three buses from the L.A. County Sheriff's. Well, let's see how far these guys go. I mean, you know, I give them props. You know, they can take balls to do shit like that. Especially not because, you know, this government is going to. They use the force a lot. So, Aparato. Who came up with the name Aparato? I like the name. Who came up with the name, Alex? I came up with the name. It came from, I borrowed it from the Café Tacuba song, El Aparato. Oh. I love the concept. It was one of the first times I actually heard that guitar-like instrument. And I was like, hmm, it doesn't sound like a regular acoustic guitar. And I opened up the picture, and there was about three. There was a drawing of three folks that looked like they're wearing guayaberas, looking like they're in a semi-tropical space, staring up into a UFO, an ovni. I was like, that is so awesome. It's about an abduction. Yeah, that's Café Tacuba for you. Yeah, it's about an abduction in Veracruz, right? Pablo in Veracruz. And these guys were holding their haranas, too. And slowly made my way into Son Jarocho and found ways to combine it with ethereal rock. Beautiful. Beautiful. So how do you guys meet? Like, you... I played a show at Self Help Graphics, and at that time, Alex was playing... Were you playing by yourself? No, I was playing with Mr. Hangup. Oh, okay. And then Alex was with Olmeca, right? And that's where we met. Or, no, that's where... That's where we met, yeah, definitely. Are you from Santa Ana as well? No, I'm from Texas. Oh, Texas. No, like here in L.A., though. No, I live in L.A. Oh, okay. Yeah, yeah. Cool, cool. And you said from La Puente? No, where you at? Yeah, grew up in La Puente. Grew up in La Puente. Mm-hmm. Born and raised. That's the only place I can find my stuff. La Puente? Yeah. A lot of dispensaries there. Yeah. No sé nada. How did Vanessa make her way into Aparato? Jeez, we met... Yeah. I met Kat 2010. We did a gig with the guys from Olin, Isla de Olin. We played Mexican... Olin? Did you just say Olin? I said Olin. I said Olin. Those guys are... They came here once. I mean, to Skid Row Studios to play for... Rodarte Brothers? I think so. Yeah. I mean, I knew about it because, you know, they're doing it here at Skid Row Studios.com. Uh-huh. But I know they were here. Yeah, they're brothers. Yeah, yeah. So Kat and I played a gig with them. We played a bunch of Mexican Revolutionary Corridos and... What? Yeah. What? Amazing. So, yeah, and we've just been in touch ever since. And last year, about a year ago, they called me over to play a couple gigs, and I said, sure, let's do it. It's a mariachi instrument, and I've been doing mariachi since I was about, you know, 10, 11 years old. Oh, nice. And rock is what I listen to when I'm not playing or listening to mariachi, and it just seems like the perfect combination to be able to mix those two worlds together. So after an almost year break and a travel, spreading mariachi to Shakespeare and Oregon, I'm back, and I'm able to play with this awesome band. Yeah. Nice, yeah. So, okay, so you guys are going to play in a few minutes, maybe in the second hour. Okay. But right now, I want to get through this before it goes away. Then after that, we're going to have Frank LePore dropping a set here at Piñata Hour. Chido. So, okay, so don't look this way. Oh, I won't look, I won't look. I don't know. I see your big eyes looking at me like, what is he going to do? You're going to porn again? Huh? Yeah, we're going to... Pinch it, Frank. I know. I'm going to pinch it, man. Do you want more water, Frank? Do you want some more water? No, I'm good. We got water now. I know. What's up? I don't know. I was like, what is this? KFI? Yeah. I think this is water. Agua, man. I like this mic. I have some... No. Okay. All right, so I want you to see if you guys can guess who this is. Okay. Okay. Don't look this way, please. I won't look. I won't look. I promise. Porfa. Porfa. Porfa, please. All right, so let's see if you guys get it. All right, let's see if I got it right here. Back it up. See if you know your stuff. Okay. Okay. Oh, I know who that is. Don't say that anymore. Okay. Do you guys know? Okay, you say you know, right? Yeah. Okay, Sonic Q. Sonic Q. Yes. All right. You guys know about it? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. You know? Okay, you got to raise your hand, okay? Okay, raise your hand. Oh, raise your hand. Let's see who's the faster here in the West. We use the buzzard. We'll use our fake buzzards. Or you could just call out your name. Yeah. Call out your name. Yeah, whoever calls out their name first. All right, how about this? What's that? You want me to give you another one? Please. Yeah. All right, there we go. Do you guys know this? Sí. Yeah? Yo quiero jugar. Okay, vamos a ver. All right, who's that? Who raised your hand? Who raised your hand? Was that you? Yeah. Who's that? Ramona Ayala. No, dude. You're close. You're close. That was definitely Cornelio Reyna. You want me to do it one more time? All right. Yeah, do it one more time. All right. Let's see. All right. Classic entrance. I don't know. Damn. It sounds like punk rock from the 80s. Somebody just said it. You're close. Somebody just said it, right? No. No, from here? Yeah. No, nobody. It was you. Oh. Yeah. Sonia? Sonia? Sonia. Oh, the Stooges? Oh, awesome. Nice. Look, check it out. Yay. All right, so that's... They're performing tomorrow, I think. Are they? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. They're making up that canceled show. All right, all right. I think I like this game, man. You got to... Yeah. I just came out with it. I was, like, really stunned. I was like, I'm going to do this. Yeah. Just keep bringing on the Ramona Ayala tracks. Kat, don't cheat. She's cheating. I won't. I was really cheating. She's pulling out a mirror. I'm kidding with you, man. All right, here we go. Here we go. All right. That's a classic. Oh. Oh, I know. If you don't know this song... I know, I know. If you don't know this song, you just open the door. Well, okay. What is it? Hold on. The name is at the tip of my tongue. Okay. Let me do it again. Let me do it again, okay? Let me do it one game. One more time. Let me do it one more time. Oh, come on. Oh, man. All right. All right. All right. Who's that? I can't believe the freaking name. You got it, Vanessa? Anybody inside the booth knows who it is. Jefferson Airplane. Oh, yeah. That is what I wanted to say. Was I not supposed to say it? I'm sorry. No, you can say it. You can say it. You can say it. It's for everybody to play. Can I turn my volume up? On your headsets? Yes. I'm okay, though. Thank you. No, it's just this is low right now, so that's why. But you can hear, right? Yeah. Okay. I like how you just give us a few seconds of the intro. Yeah, I mean, you know, I'm not that easy, Frank. Yeah. You're hard. I'm really hard to get. All right. So the next time. Don't look. I'm not looking. Hey, hey, hey, hey. All right. So what else we got here? This is a really nice one. Oh, I know. I know. If you don't know this, do you guys know? Anybody? No, they don't. Nobody does. All right. Don't say anything. Don't say anything. Because I know you do your homework. But what about you guys over there? Anybody here? That's RBD. Close. Close. Esa banda se llama Crema. Crema. There we go. Si, se llama Crema. I was about to say that. White room. This is cream. White room. All right. So that's that. I love the drums. This is the last one. See if you know. I think Frank is going to know this because this guy is into this band. I think you know who they are.
