artists to the wall and who also did the subways no one else had done that wall no subway rider and no uh native new yorker right because keith was born in pennsylvania right and the other i know i know uh los gemelos were brazilian a couple other guys uh uh uh shepherds from la right um um fail they're from the uk right and i can you know aiko is japanese i just go on and on right right right so but real quick i'm gonna post a picture of that of that wall on the skid row studios uh site um and whoever's interested you can google the houston street uh wall there that crash did um the fucking thing is humongous and and and you were telling me earlier that you did that in three fucking days three days man freezing too the um i was given five days to do it um and the the tuesday that the wall was supposed to have been primed there was a massive storm rainstorm so they couldn't do anything tuesday wednesday morning i was supposed to start so they started priming the wall wednesday morning i got there the guy was finishing one side and i was already starting on the other side you know outlining um then thursday and friday were really freezing cold um turns out when i was you know when i was uh looking at the at the weather um to find out in terms of pain saturday there was a thunderstorm coming in so i had to face the wall friday and sure enough it poured saturday it was and it worked out it was also um st patrick's day so it would have been crazy to try and get into the city right because it's maddening yeah 50 million drunken people three days yeah three days you guys got to see that wall it's fucking unbelievable it's beautiful you do a lot of uh cartoon uh comic strip type characters got popeye in it i love it it's got a lot of colors more than eight uh to me to me would never have been able to replicate that shit um so we're gonna wrap this up real soon but i wanted to ask you about two major exhibits one of them is art in the streets that happened in los angeles curated by jeffrey deutsch and uh how was that for you um and were you happy about it just generally you know what were your feelings about that i saw it i loved it um the exhibition well the exhibition that you saw was very different from what they originally planned they wanted to um um do 30 artists and with different artists representing different parts of the world both east coast and west coast or just the world the world so you know they had those jammies from brazil they were just having me lee and future represent the united states um um and on and on and on and on and as as time went on uh it changed it changed incredibly um then they started deciding about doing installations and doing this and doing that like you know it was just it was just it was a little nuts um um you know it it the the again you know i think the catalog was was better than the exhibition i mean just the the way i mean for example they left out fashion motor which was which i don't know how they only include them in the timeline right right and meanwhile fashion water was a major integral part of the evolution of i mean more than patty aster you know and fun gallery right not not just in patty because i love to death but fashion water was there before them so so you know that that was insane um then um you know all all the uh all the problems with all the guys doing installations you know all the the the the problem that came up with that was kind of weird um because they were quite few installations there but i think a lot of those were from the west coast right all this from the west coast well i mean even the guy that did the blade piece he's the guy from the west coast the blade yeah um i didn't go to the opening because um it bothered me that there were a lot of people who should have been the show and they weren't in the show um so you kind of boycotted in a sense yeah i mean boycotting yeah you could say that yeah you could say that um it's just you know there were a lot of people that shouldn't have been in the show right so you know i kind of like the historical content i wasn't aware about the fashion motor but it makes sense totally now it makes sense they were talking about it i i thought there were some people in there that really didn't contribute that much to the evolution of graffiti and they not only were they there but they put a lot of emphasis or or they gave them a lot a lot of props so i was like i don't know why he's here and like somebody else is in here who should have been there that wasn't there please i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know i don't know days had a little small painting in there that was an afterthought that was an afterthought he wasn't asked yeah doves i i was wondering why days only had a small little painting there doze green um these are all east coast artists and days chris days ellis is your um your uh uh partner you guys you you've been sharing studio space with days from the get-go huh he's my baby mama we've been we've been sharing students by a3 yeah right and what i'm i'm definitely going to interview days uh uh in depth uh another time because i can't interview him in 10 minutes he's another he's another crazy but uh a totally prolific and amazing artist as well so so doze green days and who else wow um the first one that come to mind um all right i don't have to put you on the spot that's cool too guys and then the other thing that kind of pissed me off was the whitney museum of of contemporary art here in new york city did uh a similar exhibit but it wasn't about street art it was a century of art if i remember correctly was the title of it yeah right and and and not one of you guys were included in that actually that was the museum of art and art and they and the only way no no i'm talking about i know i'm talking about the whitney that's the one that they had henry's photos that's the only thing they had keith harry and they had henry chalfant yeah right and then they what they to appease us they just had to do a a thing downstairs a um i didn't even see that yeah it was a um a talk oh a lecture yeah yeah yeah yeah and a whole bunch of over there talking that's that's yeah that's what they decided to do yeah i thought maybe they would incorporate graffiti with marcel duchamp and have you guys paint the urinal because i might yeah yeah i might yeah yeah i'm i'm mart 17 that was how he signed the urinals for me for me i was like whoa a century of art well then how come not even one of these guys that have contributed i mean when you talk about art and you're talking about the art movement in general i mean you cannot you cannot uh uh you know omit uh these street art not the graffiti movement of this the political issue you know is what came about because remember um the whitney um guggenheim they all get money from from from the government to to get grants and subsidies and and we're talking about an art form that was criminal yeah it originated in criminal activity yes which is how we started the interview yeah so so i was i was a little pissed off at the on the other end of the spectrum i'm not a big fan of the whitney museum i think it's a little too stuffy i mean museums and generals are yeah i just i just i just you know i've been to the only good thing to come out of the whitney for me in terms of that's uh the only the best exhibit i've ever seen there there were two carol walker and keith herring the keith haring retrospective i didn't see the bosque out there i saw the bosque out in la and i did see the key herring there and i was blown away and i don't i did see the keith herring retrospective in san francisco i thought the new yorker was way better yeah you know it was it was all yeah carol walker is amazing too but um carol walker is out of control yeah yeah yeah well the basket show in in in la was unbelievable i was never a fan of uh of jean michel basket uh until i saw that i i got it and then you could right i got it yeah because if you just see two or three does it make sense but when you see it you're like oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it's like a diary right you can read it and you can see everything he's went through right you get him yeah then you're like whoa right you're blown away yeah so i i i think that's it i think i've uh i think i've uh i kept you in one place for a long time so i want to i want to thank you so much for giving us giving me the opportunity on nestorius public radio uh to get a little in-depth on in you and your work and your life i appreciate it go see that uh wall on uh house and street google fashion moda john crash matos uh google fashion moda and we out so so!!!
so so so so so so so so so!

Bye.
Yes.
Started off the set.
Loved ones, there's a gentleman born in Sudan, raised in Brooklyn.
His birth name is Ahmed Galeb.
He goes by Sing Cain as a musician and an artist.
He's done some work with the A'sayer and Caribou before.
Got some recordings out.
This is the latest one.
Got on the DFA label, Mean Love.
Old Taddy's name in the tune from the Mean Love record.
Very recently, this whole entire record is really growing on me.
Gonna be one of my favorites of the year, I think.
He's playing at the Echo October 21st.
Just sing Kane.
The next song you heard, the second one in the set.
Palo Nutini, also brand new recordings.
I believe that one's coming out.
It's expected out September 16th.
I know it's been pushed a couple times.
This one also.
Everything I heard from this record is just incredible.
Please check it out.
Palo Nutini.
Let Me Down Easy was the name of the tune that you heard.
From the Iron.
Sky EP.
You know it's been released overseas for a while.
Scottish singer-songwriter Palo Nutini.
He's also coming up.
He's playing soon at the Wilterns, September 27th.
After that, the Rotary Connection.
The tune, Respect.
It was written by Otis Redding.
And when he sang it, there was quite a bit of a...
brevity to it.
As only he could do it.
And of course...
Of course, Aretha made the tune her own with a little bit more of an empowerment kind of feel.
But that was the Rotary Connection version.
It's about as perfect as it gets.
Some Chicago psych soul jazz from the Rotary Connection.
And then the song after that, the last tune in the set.
Of course, it's called...
Of course, the classic Thelma Houston, Don't Lead Me This Way.
Her version of the original Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes tune.
That was the extended, dancier one.
Came out in 1977, 76.
Something like that.
And that brings you to right here, right now.
Me, you.
The tune you're hearing behind me now is Sputnik 1.
It's out on the Ubiquity label.
That's out as a single.
You can find that on the Ubiquity recordings website.
So you hanging out?
Want to hear some more music?
How about Elvis Costello and the Roots?
How about Elvis Costello and the Roots?
How about Elvis Costello and the Roots?
How about Elvis Costello and the Roots?
And the world's surprised to see us So they greeted us with palms And they asked for ammunition Acts of contrition in small arms Wake me up, wake me up, wake me up, wake me up with me Wake me up with me With a slap or a kiss Wake me up, wake me up, wake me up, wake me up, wake me up Yeah, I don't know if there's something better than this I got this imaginary radio and I'm punching up the dial I got the AC trained on the DV so it won't blow up in my eye And everything that I thought of fanciful and rocked is too extreme Must have family entertainment here in this strange land of dreams And I practice in my likeness Of St. Francis of Assisi And if I hold my hand outstretched A little bird Comes to me And I might recite a small pretty If I ever shed them I lay down on an iron flame And found myself in bed Stepping on the fence The earth was stretching through the bars The wheel in it comes down the corridors Wake me up, wake me up, wake me up, wake me up We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.
We'll be right back.

Love doing this next up, tennis.
They're made of steel.
Making waves out there.
This tune's called Mean Streets from their small sound EP out last year.
They're gonna be playing Saturday, October 25th at the Troubadour.
Summer in the Catskills, baby Singing just for the thrill Everyone knows all about you Don't they?
You do it for the thrill Whatever's left, you'll find You've got to give it what you've got now You've gotta give it what you've got Baby, it's true They'll need nothing for you You've got to give it what you've got now You've gotta give it what you've got now Oh, oh There's nothing wrong with fame Oh, oh You'll never be the same Didn't you know they would love you?
But even more Now that you're gone You're leaving me surreptitiously You make a hit out of any song Baby, whatever's left, you'll find You've got to give it what you've got now You've gotta give it what you've got Oh, oh Stay on your own Oh, oh Only leave it alone You've got to give it what you've got now You've gotta give it what you've got Laura There's nothing wrong with fame Yeah, yeah Laura You'll never be the same Born and raised on the main streets That's where she learned how to keep the dream The beat some say That girl's got some fan I heard her name off a million times The same Thank you.
Thank you.
Yeah, that was tennis.
Before that, we heard the great Steely Down with Peg.
Classic tune.
We started off the set with the Soul Jazz Orchestra, Celestial Blues from their Inner Fire album out a little bit earlier this year.
Please check that one out.
It is one of my faves so far.

And tonight I got for you not the best of, but some of my favorite releases from 2014.
These are all releases from the past year, 2014.
I got about three hours worth of them, but I had to condense it down into this 55-minute show.
Flying Lotus.
Soul Jazz Orchestra.
Jose James.
The Decoders.
I got a bunch of stuff.
I'm going to start you off with, the man Anthony Valadez, really a renaissance man, musician, producer, photographer, KCRW DJ.
Breathe his name in the song.
Enjoy.
Enjoy.
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up.
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up.
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up.
Wake up.
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up.
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up.
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up.
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up.
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up.
One spinning ritual into fusion.
Emancipated form treble clefs.
See notes and quotes form men I never met.
One spinning ritual into fusion.
Emancipated form treble clefs.
See notes and quotes form men I never met.
Death.
Two.
I am Archie Shep and Wyclef.
G, Combinant N.
G, Harris in my blood.
One love.
There are no graveyards, only ancient boulevards.
Three.
I am the dark eyes of sunken lullabies.
The child of you don't knows and if I could, promises never broken, simply deferred.
Eight.
I am my father's word.
Four.
Breath.
Five.
I am the image of shadows.
The depth of brick walls.
The thump of basketballs.
The mound of black fists.
The lisp of stereotypes.
The night.
The day.
And all that 365 circumstances bring.
I sing.
Because black folk do.
Six.
I watch like the pavement does.
I am the grass struggling to grow between the cracks of 45 singles.
I am the backs of hits of crack.
I am the voice saying, this is mama's television.
Gone.
I am the pawn.
Broker.
Born of king and queen.
Seven.
And still I sing.
So what you gonna do right now with the world in your hand?
You can squeeze it in your palm cause it's too much stress and you gotta break through.
Forget for a minute that it's all on you.
And just let it go.
Let it go fall back for a minute.
Back in time when the rhyme is something.
A dime is something.
Taking a little minute in your mind is something.
But it seemed like the day got longer than the night.
Feeling like we waiting for the truth.
Like we waiting for the truth in the night.
And if it don't come then we all just might.
Submit to the movement of the left, left, right.
I voted for Obama so the world go on change.
Wrote a letter to my mama just to up her up a day.
But I never ever sent it.
Wonder if I meant it.
I read the bible frequently.
She gave me and repented.
Passed through all my rent and now I really can't recall.
If I had a fucking square or I had a fucking ball.
I'm looking for some yes I can put up with my y'all.
So I need for your response when I call.
Feel it.
We get together when we did it.
Feel it.
And we can dialogue if we reveal it.
Feel it.
And that's what we need.
That's what we need.
People's gotta talk so the peoples don't bleed.
People's gotta feel like they got a little seed in their hand.
They can build so the world they don't squeeze.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
The future is gonna be a mess with the future.
I'll see you next time.
No, I'm not naive.
I know.
I'll know so few.
So intimately.
No.
You want me.
Don't get me.
You want me for me.
You want me.
Don't get me.

You want me for real.
You want me.
So don't get me.
You want me for real.

We started off that set with Anthony Valadez, Los Angeles' own musician, producer, photographer.
He's CRW DJ Anthony Valadez.
Breathe was the name of that tune from the In Search of record out in 2014.
Featuring Rep Life from Cleveland, Ohio.
Also from Ohio is Sinkane, Mr. Ahmed Galab, a.k.a.
Sinkane.
Old type was the name of that song from the Mean Love album.
That's a DFA release, DFA records.
And after that, the last tune you heard, Palo Nutini, Let Me Down Easy.
From the Caustic Love album.
Out a little bit earlier this year.
Great record.
That record's going to carry over for a while, man.
It's a really good record.
Shitty album art, though.
Shitty cover on there.
But a great record.
Some sophisticated soul from Paisley, Scotland.
Palo Nutini.
Sounds like an Italian.
Pretty Scottish.
That brings us to right here and right now.
Present time.
Thank you, Love Jones, for joining me.
I come to you this.
This Thursday, as I do almost every Thursday.
Not every Thursday.
We're peppered through the holiday season, you know.
We'll be back in, not on the 1st.
Because, apparently, because I get to give board operator Jenny a break.
I'm being here every day.
We'll be back on the 8th for the next Neighborhood Love radio show.
Well-deserved rest, Jenny.
I'm just kidding.
And, but tonight, and I got some new music for you on the 8th.
But tonight, I'm going to be back on the 8th.
This is all 2014 releases.
Not best of.
A few of my favorite.
Next up, I got, well, behind me, by the way, this is a 2014 release.
The Great Jungle Fire.
Firewalkers is the name of this tune from their Tropicoso album out a little bit earlier this year.
National Records.
An L.A.-based Latin soul funk afro label.
National Records.
National Records.
Jungle Fire is the name of the band, if you like what's going on behind me.
But next up in the set, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.
We all know them.
Yep.
Give the People What They Want was out the very, I think, February of this year.
Out on the, of course, on Dap Tone Records.
I think it was slated for 2013 release.
But, as you may or may not know, Miss Sharon Jones is a recent cancer survivor.
And, uh...
That pushed the record.
That pushed the record over.
After that, I'm gonna play, uh, Calise.
A surprising record out a little bit earlier this year called Food.
Jerk Ribs is the name of the tune.
I assume she called it Food and had a few songs about food.
Because she is a, uh, cordon bleu.
Certified chef.
Singer, songwriter, chef, model.
This record also very, very good.
Unexpected and refreshing.
Refreshing.
It makes a pop.
Afro, neo, soul.
The album's called Food from Calise.
That's on the UK label Ninja 2.
And then I got the Decoders after that.
And a couple other songs after that.
But first up, are you ready for some of those, uh, Dap Horns?
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.
Enjoy.
Enjoy.
The minerals form minerals form minerals form minerals form minerals form minerals form minerals But never will I leave you, my love.
But just as soon as you're gone again, she's a-flapping in the wind.
Wondering what she must have been thinking of.
She's a-going.
I've been in and out so many doors.
And I've always tried to keep my head with all the men I've known before.
I've seen plenty places that I'll never see again.
I've seen a hundred thousand faces and only called a few my friends.
But it's a mystery just how you came right in.
And stole my heart away.
And left me there again.
Feeling like a stranger to my happiness.
Two more happiness.
Ooh, yeah.
Ooh, oh, oh, oh.
Feeling like a stranger to my happiness.
Now, if you think that this is a thing that only evil men can bring.
Let me skin this cat another way.
There was a man who had a plan to settle down with Marianne.
But she left him on his wedding day.
He's that darling.
I've been in and out so many doors.
I've always tried to keep my head with all the girls I've known before.
I've seen plenty places that I'll never see again.
I've seen a hundred thousand faces and only called a few my friends.
Ooh, yeah.
Ooh, yeah.
Ooh, yeah.
But it's a mystery just how you came right in.
And stole my heart away.
And left me there again.
I feel like a stranger to my happiness.
Feeling like a stranger to my happiness.
Feeling like a stranger.
Hey, hey, hey.
I'm feeling.
Feeling.
I'm feeling.
Feeling.
I'm feeling.
Feeling.
Feeling.
Oh, I said I'm feeling stranger.
It feels like I'm a stranger to my happiness.
To my happiness.
To my happiness.
To my happiness.
To my happiness.
To my happiness.
To my happiness.
To my happiness.
To my happiness.
To my happiness.

Yeah, not cool.
Oh.
Something that's new and free.
And the rhythm's exciting.
A window step that's rolled down the street.
I'll let you get this one for cheap.
In Harlem, where it started to rain.
The beat was like a soundtrack to me.
I woke up there.
My daddy wrote the world.
He played the notes and keys.
He sent a little melody and everything.
It feels just like a show.
Yeah.
I break your heart.
This is what it looks like.
So don't miss this.
This is what it looks like.
So call on me.
It feels just like a show.
So call on me.
The bass by the rain.
Break through me.
With brass, the strings, I love everything.
Let them play.
Forget the time.
Make it stay.
Lock the doors.
Dance and give it away.
Just around me.
I hear it.
The melody falls right over me.
That whistle blow is happening for me.
It feels just like a show.
I break your heart.
This is what it looks like.
So don't miss this.
This is what it looks like.
The melody falls right over me.
It feels just like a show.
The melody falls right over me.
Thought I took a break, the beat was like a sound check to me I was the girl, my daddy built the world He played the notes and keys, he set the rhythm, melody and everything It feels just like it should, break your fist And this is what it looks like, so don't resist This is what it looks like, so call on me It feels just like it should, so call on me It feels just like it should, break your fist And this is what it looks like, so don't resist This is what it looks like, so call on me It feels just like it should, so call on me It feels just like it should, break your fist And this is what it looks like, so don't resist This is what it looks like, so call on me It feels just like it should, so call on me That's Police from a record food out a little bit earlier this year.
