Welcome to our show.
Welcome to Time Out.
Time Out with Coach Miller.
I'm in studio tonight with the lovely June, who is our official show greeter.
And she's going to greet our guests downstairs and bring them up here in a few minutes.
And we've got Jeremy in the sound booth.
Hey, Jeremy.
How's it going?
Good.
Put June on the air.
Let her say hi.
Okay.
June, are you there?
Hi.
Hi, June.
Thanks for, this is February, though.
You're a little early, right?
Just a little, but, you know, it's okay, right?
Absolutely.
It's great.
Coach, have you ever seen Jeremy smile so much?
No, I have not.
Jeremy, you're doing a great job.
And you're doing a great job in the booth tonight.
And we've got Scott Schultz to my left, my official special co-host.
Scott, are you there?
I'm right here, Coach.
Good to see you.
It's great to see you.
And thank you for bringing so much liveliness to the show.
Thank you.
And I love the stogie.
I'm bringing back, you know, the 90s era, Coach.
Yes, that's right.
It's kind of like 90s era or like 70s era radio, like back when they used to have the cigars and they'd be smoking cigarettes on the air and stuff.
That's right.
It's all for effect.
It's all for effect.
It's actually an e-cigar.
Yeah, exactly.
Nice.
Nice.
I like it.
So anyway, we're excited to be here.
We've got a great, great show tonight.
We've got a lot of activity here.
We're coming up in our studio.
And, you know, the show is going into, what, our fourth or fifth month, Scott?
It's been a while.
I lost track.
Yeah.
We're on iTunes.
That's really cool.
Yep.
Yep.
And we're on YouTube.
Yep.
Just like Drake.
Just like Drake.
Drake and Coach Miller on iTunes and YouTube.
Hey, that's pretty cool.
Yeah, no kidding.
So we're excited.
Let the players know that.
Let the players know that.
Well, we've got a great show tonight.
We've got Fremont High School.
Yep.
Coming in with legendary coach Sam Sullivan and his team.
And we're excited about that.
We've got Dave Goosen from Valley Academy coming in.
And he's going to bring in his squad.
Maybe we can have them have like a four-on-four in the lobby or something.
Yeah, in the green room.
They could play in the green room.
We just need to set up a few baskets if Jeremy would let us do that.
I don't know.
What do you think?
Can we?
Can we get that done?
No, probably not in time, huh?
Have you noticed that like the top of the wall?
Like for those of you that don't know, maybe you can turn the camera towards the wall over there.
But in the green room, the wall is signed by like all the people on like the 24 different shows that are done at Skid Row Studios.
But at the top of the wall, that's our guests.
That's right.
Way at the top.
Hey, do we have 24 shows now, Jeremy, at Skid Row Studios?
Do we have that many?
Right now, yeah, the count is 24.
Wow, that's really cool.
You've got it going on here at Skid Row Studios.
And we're not really on Skid Row, Scott, are we?
No, no.
It's the jewelry district.
The jewelry district, yeah.
We're not even Skid Row adjacent anymore, really, are we, Scott?
No, but they got the rats out here.
Big, fat rats with nice diamond, you know, bracelets.
Diamond bling?
Yeah, they got bling.
Diamond bling rats, yeah.
The rats for style.
The rats here do have style.
The rats for style.
The rats here do have style.
The rats here do have style.
And they do have bling.
And that's awfully cool.
They asked me to park their car.
Yeah, it's pretty offensive.
Yeah, I would agree.
I would agree.
I pulled mine in, and our parking guy took care of my car.
And, okay, so we have got Fremont arriving shortly.
And that's going to be really great to have them in.
And the Pathfinders, one of the powerhouses, a long-time traditional teams in the L.A.
City section.
And have you had any players coach any of them on any of your teams over the years?
From Fremont?
Absolutely.
I've had, well, I've had Leslie Bean from Fremont.
Oh, okay.
There's one right there.
Okay.
Calvin Patterson.
Okay.
Do you remember Calvin?
No.
Okay, well.
I remember Leslie, though.
You remember Leslie.
Calvin Patterson played on our first state championship team at LACC.
Okay.
That was a year before my time.
Okay, there you go.
And Calvin is retired now from playing.
He's down in Texas, living in Texas.
And great, great guy.
Great player, too.
And one of the many great players that Coach Sullivan has had over the years at Fremont.
They're a traditional power.
And, you know, they're really having a great year.
We'll get them in here, and we'll figure out their record and stuff.
But they're having a great year.
Really, a really good team.
I really like their team.
They're a great team.
So we've got Dave Goosen coming in with Valley Academy right after that at the 11 o'clock hour.
And, you know, we don't always keep track of time here, Scott, as you well know too well.
Yeah.
Well, especially once you get, like, a basketball team blocking the screen.
You know, you get five basketball players, it's hard to see past them.
Yeah, that's true.
I want to give a special shout-out to Eric Israel and the Virtual Realty Group.
They do a great job with real estate.
They're representing buyers and sellers in real estate here in Southern California and beyond.
And Eric may be listening.
Oh, Coach Ford is on the line already.
Well, we've already got a caller.
Let me get right to Coach Ford here.
Where is Coach Ford?
I don't see him on the line here, Jeremy.
I'm here.
Okay, there.
I see him now.
Coach Ford, you're there.
Coach Ford was here last week, Scott, with the Manual Arts Toilers.
Coach Ford, give us a rundown.
What happened tonight?
Oh, just calling to give y'all a shout-out.
I enjoyed it last week.
We beat up West Adams 63-55 tonight.
63-55.
You must have played a lot of your bench getting ready for the playoffs, huh?
That was the plan.
Okay.
Well, you know, the thing I like about Coach Ford, Scott, is he's always got a plan.
He's a man with a plan.
How did you guys play tonight, Coach?
I let the freshman play, and I let...
A couple of the bench players played most of the first half, and then I had to put in the starters so they can knock off a little of the rest and get the game back under control.
Okay, let's talk about...
West Adams played hard.
I got to give them credit.
Okay, nice.
Nice.
Let's talk about the playoffs coming up.
When do you find out who you play and stuff?
Tomorrow is the coaches' meeting in the afternoon, so we should know by tomorrow evening where we're going or if we're going to get a home game or not.
Okay.
Okay.
And what do you suspect?
What are you thinking?
Well, last week they had us eight, but we won two this week, so we should move up in the standings.
I would...
I mean, in the rankings.
I would hope so.
Yeah, so we can crack that top five and get a home game.
I like our chances in the tournament.
Okay.
Okay.
Now, what level do they have you in this year for the city playoffs?
Division three.
Division three.
Well, I think you might make some noise.
Who are the top-seeded teams or the top-ranked teams in division three?
Do you know that?
I keep hearing Grant is the team to beat, and then Huntington Park is ranked in the top five.
Hamilton, and I think Hollywood was above us, so...
Okay.
Okay.
Well, you know what?
I like your chances, coach.
I'm looking forward to it.
I like your chances.
I like your chances.
I like your chances.
I like your chances.
I think that you guys can make a difference.
I think that you guys can make a difference.
I think that you guys can make a difference.
I think that you guys can make some noise in the playoffs.
You've got a nice team, and I think that you can go far, you know?
Appreciate it.
Thanks for having us on the show last week.
I want to call and give a shout-out to Sullivan, too.
Okay.
Awesome coach.
Yeah, he is.
He's a veteran.
So, anyway, I will be looking for those seedings.
When will the seedings come out?
I know they'll hit the papers.
Sunday morning.
But they should be on MaxPreps.
Possibly tomorrow afternoon.
Okay.
So, MaxPreps.com will have it, right?
Yes.
And if we go there, will they have the rankings right now or not?
Currently, it wasn't updated.
It was still having us at eight, but they encouraged everyone to put in the scores immediately after the games tonight so they can get it all worked out.
Okay, nice.
Well, it's exciting to...
Going into the playoffs with a couple of wins in a row.
And you've got a nice team.
In fact, you beat Fremont on Wednesday, didn't you, at Fremont?
Yes, sir.
So, that was a huge win.
And then you beat West Adams on the road tonight.
So, you've got two road wins.
Not just two wins this week, but two road wins.
Yep.
Trying to gain a little momentum, gain a little confidence going into the playoffs.
I like our chances, though.
I do, too.
I do, too.
I think that you've done a great job with that program, as I pointed out last week on our show.
And hopefully, we can get you guys...
You know, if you get to the city championship game, we'll bring you back in and talk about that before the city championship game.
I appreciate it.
Okay.
Well, thanks for calling in, Coach Ford.
It's great to hear your voice.
And we're sending here what...
And we'll talk to you soon, okay?
Okay.
Y'all have a good one.
Okay.
Nice.
Okay.
Jeremy, do we have an interview we want to play from...
Yeah, we do.
We have Brooks and Ray John Moore.
Okay.
We have an interview that Chris Maxwell did with Coach Tony Brooks at Pastina High School.
They beat Muir High School last night, Scott.
And Chris was there, and he did a little interview.
You want to run that interview?
Go ahead, Jeremy.
We're sending here what Coach Tony Brooks, after their 61-53 victory for the Pasadena Bulldogs over crosstown rival John Muir today to keep their share of the Pacific League title going.
Coach, tell me about the game.
You know, it was a typical Muir PHS basketball game.
High energy, high athleticism.
Two good teams that don't give up anything.
And I thought Muir really came out and played well.
They scouted us.
They played us well.
And they really, I thought, had a determined look on their face.
And that's good for us.
You know, we always have talked all year.
We don't shy away from competition.
We love that, and we love to battle.
And it was just a great game.
It was close at the beginning of the game.
What did you tell your team at halftime for them to go on that run in the second half?
Well, it's kind of a thing where we have to persevere.
You know, I mean, in competition, not everything goes good all the time.
And you can't get down on yourself.
You can't get down on yourself.
You got to keep fighting until it works.
And our execution step ramped up a little bit in the second half.
We were able to do some things.
We got into the key area, which they kept us out of.
It made us shoot a lot of jumpers in the first half.
But we kind of forced our way and executed offensively to get into that area.
And I thought we made some plays that did that.
With this big game, it's a rivalry.
You know, all the kids grew up with each other.
You know their coach.
Their coach knows you guys.
How do you keep your players' emotions in check throughout a game like this?
How do you keep your players' emotions in check throughout a game like this?
How do you keep your players' emotions in check throughout a game like this?
Well, you know, that's something that can take over.
And you can almost forget you got to play a basketball game.
And what I tell the kids all the time is focus on their job and their responsibilities.
If you focus on those things, then good things will happen.
Don't be all, you know, wrapped up into the crowd and what's going on and who's here and so forth.
But to focus on your responsibilities.
Well, you guys have wrapped up at least a share of the Pacific League title.
And now the playoffs are coming up.
What are your prospects for the playoffs?
Well, you know, it's a tough game.
It's a tough game.
It's a tough game.
It's a tough game.
It's another season.
And we have to step up.
We have to take our level of play and our execution even higher.
And because you're, if you don't, you're out.
So we will go back to practice.
We'll start working hard again.
And nothing changes.
But we will understand that we have to continue to look to improve and get better as a team.
Well, thank you very much.
And good luck to you and the fellow Bulldogs in the upcoming playoffs.
And hopefully we'll see you guys again.
OK, thank you.
All right, thank you.
We'll see you guys.
OK, we're back.
Scott, great interview Chris did.
Yeah, that was a good job.
Last night with Coach Tony Brooks.
And congratulations to the Pasadena High School Bulldogs possibly being either co-champs or sole champs of the Pacific League this year.
And Coach Brooks' first year, we had him here in studio, Scott, with some of his team, what, many months ago.
Sure, sure.
Before the season started, actually.
Yeah.
And so it's nice to know that we're following him.
And that he's showing up with them.
And that they had a successful year.
Yeah, that's great.
So anyway, Scott, tell people about iTunes and YouTube and how they can find us and that kind of stuff.
Well, you can go on Skid Row Studios channel, which is skidrowstudios.com.
And you can look up Time Out with Coach Miller there.
And also you can go to YouTube, go to the Skid Row Studios page.
And you can find Time Out with Coach Miller there.
And you could probably type Time Out with Coach Miller online.
Yeah.
You can find Time Out with Coach Miller on the search in YouTube.
They'll probably pull it up there as well.
You can go to iTunes, type in Time Out with Coach Miller.
And you can look up the old interview with Coach Brooks and Pasadena when they were here at the beginning of the year and see how that all panned out.
And you can subscribe for free, get all the past episodes and follow us every week.
And then there must be another way.
Well, you know, they can go on our website, timeoutwithcoachmiller.com.
Yeah.
That's timeoutwithcoachmiller.com.
Jeremy has put that together for us and he's kind of overseeing that.
And we're going to be getting our links up there.
I know that if they go to the YouTube and do a search for the Skid Row Studios station on YouTube, they can hit that and they can get on there and they can find...
I know I found the manual arts show last week and that was great to see that.
Let's take a call, Jeremy.
Caller, you're on the air.
Caller, go ahead.
What's up, coach?
Hey, who is it?
That's Wilson.
Wilson.
Wilson from Crenshaw.
How did it go tonight?
It was okay.
Did you all beat the Dorsey Dons?
No.
You did not beat the Dorsey Dons.
I think that was some greenroom noise.
And we got some greenroom noise going on.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
noise out here, Wilson.
Apparently, Fremont doesn't like Dorsey.
No, apparently Fremont doesn't like Crenshaw because Crenshaw lost to Dorsey.
Oh, sorry.
Wilson, what happened?
Turnovers.
Turnovers?
Too many turnovers?
Yeah.
Wow.
What was the final score?
The final score, we lost by five.
First quarter, we saw ugly.
It was like 18-2.
We went to Afar and losing by seven.
And then we brought the lead down to one in the third quarter and kept it there all the way to the fourth.
And then we lost it from there.
Yeah.
Boy, Dorsey sure has a nice new gym, don't they?
Yeah, it was a clean gym.
Yeah, it's a clean gym.
I like that gym.
You know, I'm sorry that you guys lost.
I mean, that, you know, Crenshaw's one of my favorite teams.
And I think that you guys have a really, really good team.
You know, I'm really sorry you guys lost.
I'm a little surprised.
It's all right.
I'm not surprised.
Okay, so you guys go into the playoffs, though, coming up, right?
Yeah.
Okay, well, I wish you well in the playoffs, Wilson.
You know, I think that you guys can go far.
Hopefully, you guys will get out there and play some good ball.
Yeah, all right.
Well, I appreciate the call-in.
Thanks for calling.
All right.
Thanks.
Okay, very good.
Jeremy, let's go to a quick commercial break.
When we come back, we're going to have Fremont High School's live in-studio.
This is Coach Miller from Time Out with Coach Miller.

Shoot the three points, y'all.
Look, it's Time Out with Coach Miller.
14 straight conference championships.
We winners.
And don't stop from the bottom to the ceiling, cause all I know is win, and we winning.
Full focus, we got a topic to discuss.
High school, prep school, small colleges, yup.
Another special guest today, listen up.
It might get a little hectic from the stuff we discuss.

323-962-9696.
State Champs High School, and JC.
He was the first coach to do it in California history.
Coach Miller, he can beat any team.
Got shooters on the court, and dunkers dunk everything.
He's got to win, so the plan is defeat.
Been coaching on the court before he turned 18.
From 08, going down to 93, he was the conference champs, home of the LACC.
Youngest coach to beat 500 teams, 43.
Everybody can't do it like he.
A coach is something he was destined to be.
Now we got a radio show to discuss some things.
Talking informative conversations.
Listen to the real.
Tuesday and Friday at night from 10 to 12.
A live show.
Tune in and listen well.
Special guests and take audience calls as well.
Okay, we're back.
We're live.
Scott, we are in studio with our specialist.
Special guest, the Fremont High School Pathfinders.
The Pathfinders.
That's right.
They found their path all the way down to Skid Row Studios.
Did you guys drive here in Pathfinders?
Yes.
Pretty much.
Pretty much.
Okay.
Well, if old Young had something to do with it, you got here in style.
I don't know.
Young isn't here tonight.
I don't see him, but if he had something to do with it, you got here in style.
And Coach Sullivan, right across from me, you're looking pretty sharp tonight in your shirt and tie.
Well, it's Valentine's Day.
Coach.
Okay, that's right.
I'm keeping you away from your wife.
No, she's fine.
She's cool with it.
Okay.
Well, she can call in right now.
Our phone number is 1-800-893-9562 if she wants to call and give you a Valentine wish shout out.
Oh, we've already taken care of that.
Okay, nice.
Nice.
Nice.
Okay.
Well, how many years have you been married now, Coach?
Oh, 27 years.
27 years.
And you know what?
You've been coaching at Fremont longer than that.
I've been at Fremont 36 years.
That's right.
So you were at Fremont coaching the Pathfinders before you knew Mrs. Sullivan.
Oh, this is correct.
Yeah.
So, you know, it's two love stories there.
Either Fremont and Mrs. Sullivan, both.
Well, definitely, I'll take that because I do love Fremont.
I spend half of my life there and I enjoy working with the kids and I enjoy the community and so it is a love affair.
Yeah, I know.
And that's one reason why I wanted to get you guys on the show.
Scott, Coach Sullivan is a legend.
He's been coaching.
I don't think there's anyone in the city that's coached at their school nearly as long as you have.
I think right now they're, I don't know about the guy at Grant High School, how he may, we may be pretty close.
How he's been there a long time.
Howie Levine, right?
Right.
Okay, that's right.
And Coach West had a long run at Crenshaw but I don't know if he had 36 years.
It was close to that.
It was close.
It was right there.
It was close.
Coach West and you had some legendary teams back in the day.
When I think of traditional LA City School powerhouses, I always think of Crenshaw and Fremont and of course Westchester now.
Westchester's kind of, you know, been the one, the last, what, 15 years or so but when I go back in traditional powerhouses I always think of Crenshaw and Fremont.
Well, thanks.
And that's the way it was for quite a while and Westchester came on.
Matter of fact they beat us in 2000 for the city championship and that's when they started their run.
That's right.
I remember that.
I remember that.
And you know what?
You know, the thing that's been so consistent though is you and the wins at Fremont.
I mean, this year has been, a great, great season.
I've seen you guys play four or five times.
I know myself and you guys have a really, really good team.
I mean, I don't know if you're going to win the city or not.
I sure hope so.
But I'll tell you what, this is not, I mean, you're not riding off into the sunset of retirement, you know, with poor records or poor teams.
No, the kids have really worked hard this year and it's a good group of guys to be around and my assistant coaches and alumni have really done a good job with these kids and Coach McLennan has been super.
That's my assistant, former player George McLennan and you'll get to talk to him shortly but he's done a tremendous job with the kids this year and makes my job easy.
I just try to stay on top of everything, make sure it's running smoothly and they do most of the work.
Right.
Well, you know what?
That's what good leaders do, Scott.
They delegate and they have great staffs and they are not afraid to let guys coach and Coach George, I've known a long time, I've watched him.
He does a great job as you said and all of your staff does.
I mean, you know, Young is legendary and I know he's not really on the staff right now but he's still there, he's in the stands and...
Well, he's in my ear every day about, Coach, you should have done this.
Coach, you should have done that.
Why did you leave Frankie in so long?
You should have took him out.
So he's constantly still, even though he's not coaching on the bench, he's still coaching.
That's right.
Well, let's talk about Frank.
Frank is over here to my left.
Frank Betten, B-E-T-T-E-N O-N.
O-N.
Okay, I gotcha.
Okay.
Frank Betten, B-E-T-T-O-N.
Frank, I've seen you play this year.
You've made some big shots this year for Coach, huh?
Yeah.
And you're a senior?
Yeah.
Okay, and it's kind of exciting that you're here in our studio tonight.
We are on iTunes and we are on YouTube and Scott, who is that just like?
Oh, that's just like Drake.
That's right.
We're just like Drake.
We're on iTunes just like Drake.
Very similar to Drake.
And we're on YouTube just like Drake.
Yep.
Just like Drake.
And you would find Coach Miller, time out with Coach Miller the same way.
Instead of typing in Drake, you would type in Coach Miller and all of a sudden your name pops up.
Yeah, how about that?
And on YouTube, you'd find us too because we're live, simulcast.
Audio and video.
And he has a rap song.
And I have a rap song, just like Drake.
He has Coach Miller's theme.
That's right.
Our theme song.
I'm going to put the camera on Frank over here for a minute.
Now, we've got cameras all over the studio, guys.
We've got cameras here, cameras there.
We got cameras up here.
We have lots of cameras.
So anyway, Frank, tell me last year as a junior, I think you averaged about what?
16, 17?
I think it was 14.
14?
14.
And this year, I know Coach George knows.
Coach George, what's Frank averaging this year?
Or maybe you know, Frank.
Do you know?
I think it's 11 or 12.
12, okay.
Sam, I always get the word from George.
When George tells me, I know it's true.
So you're averaging 11 or 12, probably 12.
And you were the leading scorer last year, I think, as a junior, right?
Yeah, I was.
And Coach George, what's Frank doing this year?
Is he second or third on the team?
In scoring.
Oh, he's leading in scoring again.
Okay.
Much better balance this year, right?
Okay, because you've got Lonnie, you've got Craig, you've got some other guys that we're going to bring on here.
But you know what?
Frank has made some big shots.
I've seen some big shots.
Sam, if you had to tell our listening and our viewing audience about Frank, what would you say?
How would you describe him?
I'd say that Frank is an untapped, untapped source.
He doesn't even realize how good he can be.
And he's a good outside shooter, good ball handler.
He can play the one, the two, or the three.
And we use him at four different spots on our team.
And he can excel at all four spots.
And he's a diamond in the rough.
This is a kid that if he continues playing basketball, he's going to get better and better and better each year that he plays.
Nice.
I agree with you.
I saw that.
And Coach George has spoke really highly of Frank to me privately.
And I've seen that, Coach.
I think he's made big shots.
What I like about Frank is he's tough.
He doesn't back down from a challenge.
He gets in there and does some dirty work too, doesn't he?
Oh yeah.
He's a quiet assassin.
That's what I would sum up Frank.
A quiet assassin.
A guy that knows how to get it done.
And like I said, he's just getting better and better each time that he steps out on the court.
Nice.
Nice.
Frank, how do you feel about that?
Those words about you.
I feel good.
I never really heard them words from Coach though, but since he said that, I feel real good about that.
Okay, good.
I'm glad that you got some praise.
Coach George speaks really highly of you, by the way.
And so he's told me very positive things about you.
And you know, Coach Sullivan thinks that you have a bright future.
He said if you keep playing that you're going to get better and better.
Oh yeah.
I'm going to keep on playing of course.
Okay, good.
Well, we'll have to talk about that down the road.
I know Coach George has been putting a bug in my ear about you and trying to maybe get you into a prep school situation for next year where you could keep playing and getting better.
So we'll talk about that down the road, you know, off the air.
But I'm just happy that you're in studio tonight.
I'm happy you guys won.
You guys beat Locke tonight.
Craig, you guys beat Locke, right?
Yep.
Tell me about the game, Craig Moody.
It was good.
Everybody put in effort and everything.
Okay.
How was your effort?
Good.
Okay.
Usually your effort's pretty good.
Usually when I see you play, you play hard like Frank does.
Now, tell me tonight, how many rebounds did you get?
I don't even know.
I wasn't worried about it.
Okay.
I like that.
Good answer.
That's a good answer, Scott.
He's not worried about his stats.
Exactly.
Usually though, you know, I have a saying, Coach.
I don't know, Coach Sullivan, if you'll agree with this, but I tell our players all the time.
If you don't want a rebound, you don't want to win.
That's what it comes down to, Coach.
You've been doing this long enough, you know, and Craig had 11 rebounds tonight.
He did a good job.
Nice.
I like hearing that.
I always say that.
I always say if you don't want a rebound, you don't want to win because rebounding's a lot about effort and wanting to get the ball for your team.
And it's not a stat that's maybe as glamorous as scoring.
That's why I didn't ask you, Craig, about how many points you had.
I asked you how many rebounds you had.
I'm glad that your answer's a great answer, but Coach Sullivan has the number 11.
That's a nice effort, huh, Scott?
Sure is.
Yeah, I'll take 11 every time.
Every time, yeah.
I'll take 11.
And Craig gets in there, does some dirty work, mixes it up, and, you know, we know, I've talked to Craig, Coach Sullivan, about him wanting to play harder, wanting to work harder, and that his talent will come out.
I believe that Craig I'm going to go out and say this, you know, on a limb, I believe Craig can be and will be a Division I player if he works hard, and I think he's only 17.
If he gets a little older, a little stronger, I believe that he'll be a Division I player.
I think he'll be one of those long line of Division I players that you've had, Coach.
Well, I agree with you, Coach.
He's just really scratching the surface of his abilities, and he does a lot of our dirty work.
He gets in there and he battles those guys on the floor so much.
I don't know.
I thought he was a hockey puck or something.
He's on the floor.
He's on the floor so much, but he gets in there and he battles, and he gives you everything he's got, and he'll block shots, and he's going to get better and better.
Yeah, I agree with that.
I've seen him improve, I think, more than any other player on your team this year.
I would agree.
I would agree.
So, Coach Sullivan, I get that blessing, and Coach George McClendon, same thing you're saying?
Okay.
From when I saw you guys play, I think I saw one of your first games over in a tournament over at Pioneer High School.
And to now, when I saw you play about two weeks ago, in my mind there's no doubt that Craig Moody's improved more than anyone else on the team.
And I think that speaks really highly to what he can do in the future, too.
I agree, and he's, like I said, he's just scratching the surface.
Right.
Never really played high school ball for a long period of time, and this is his first year on a varsity high school team, and really came a long ways.
Is that your first year playing varsity?
Yeah.
Nice.
Okay, well, I know your mother's proud.
I see her at games and cheering for you and stuff, and our phone number, in case she wants to call in, 1-800-893-9562.
And Jeremy usually tells me when we have calls.
I don't see any on the board right now, but Jeremy, you'll let me know if someone calls in, right?
Coach, how many D1 players have you had over the years?
Wow.
Start losing track of it.
Not quite 100.
I'd say probably around 34, 35, something like that.
Wow.
That's a lot, though.
Yeah, it is.
And especially when you consider that Fremont is a school that basically has the student athletes right there from their area.
And I know that that means a lot to Coach Sullivan.
You know, I've seen where these guys come from.
You know, he is not out getting kids from Hamilton High School or Westchester or out getting guys from the Valley.
These guys that he has and he's had over the years are guys from their community and right in their surrounding areas for the most part.
And I think that's really important, Scott.
You know, because Fremont represents a community and an area of the city of Los Angeles that needs a lot of positive representation.
And they get it from the Pathfinders.
And I believe that wholeheartedly.
I've been associated with the program.
I've recruited players out of that program for over 20 years.
And I've seen those guys.
They're all neighborhood kids, the ones I've interacted with.
Well, yes, it's I love the area.
I grew up in the area.
My mom is 87 years old.
She still lives in the area.
And I just always want to try to be positive for that area because it gets a bad rap.
That's right.
It really gets a bad rap.
But they're great people there.
Kids that are not afraid to work hard.
And that's what we do togetherness.
And we work hard.
And if you come and play us one on one, we're going to give you a good battle.
That's right.
Yeah.
One thing about Fremont is you know they're going to play hard, Scott, when they get in the court.
Okay.
Now we've got Lonnie over here.
Lonnie Shepard.
Okay, Lonnie.
How are you feeling?
Are you 100% health wise?
Yeah, I'm there.
I'm there.
Okay.
And how did you play tonight?
I could have did better, but I had eight rebounds.
I don't know how many points I had.
But you know, to me, it's all about rebounds.
Well, you know what I say, Coach George, if you don't want to rebound, you don't want to win.
So you know, I like to see Lonnie and Craig out in the court together rebounding.
One thing is I want to say, Coach Sullivan, is for the most part, I think Craig has come off the bench most of this year, right?
He has, and he plays well enough to start, but I don't like to mess with our rotation.
When I bring that guy off the bench, he gives us energy.
That's right.
And I don't want to start him, and then it will just mess up our entire rotation.
But he gets just as many minutes as some of the starters.
As a matter of fact, he plays more minutes than a couple of the starters.
Yeah, I was just about to add that.
He actually plays more than some of the starters do in the games I've seen.
But I want to say, Coach, I don't like to mess up our rotation.
I wanted to say that because I respect what Coach Sullivan's doing, and the players are here, and I understand what he's saying is that he has a rotation, and it works.
It's worked this year.
You guys have had a really good year.
And it's hard to mess that up.
I get that, okay?
I get that.
But that said, Craig, you're doing a lot of your damage.
You're coming off the bench, but you're still putting up big numbers.
Now, Lonnie, you've been starting, right?
Yeah.
Okay?
And so, you know, and sometimes I see you play, you get in foul trouble, or you're not 100% health wise, and Craig actually will play more than you in some of those games.
Yeah.
No, I'm not.
And that's okay with you, right?
Because it's about the team, and it's about winning.
Yeah.
Okay, now, the challenge, I think, for the playoffs coming up is, you know, can you, you know, produce, can you up your production, be 100% healthy, rebound harder, run the floor harder, and then when Craig gets in the game, that he's able to then bump that up to the next level after you've kind of, it's kind of like, Coach, it's kind of like tag team wrestling.
You remember the days when you and I used to watch those, those, Ric Flair and those guys on TV, you know?
This is before Hal Cogan, you know, Mad Dog Vachon and those guys.
Oh, yeah.
And it's tag team wrestling, tag team wrestling.
Lonnie comes in, he beats him up.
This is the ideal, I think, in Coach Sullivan's mind.
Lonnie comes in, and he beats him up, throws him around, gets some boards.
He gets tired, he comes out the game, you put Craig in, and then Craig just, like, smashes him.
Well, Craig, he's like the cleanup man.
He comes in, and whatever's been missed, he takes care of it.
And Coach McLean made a good point.
Coach McLean said, well, Coach, I don't look at them as different guys.
I look at them as one person.
So when you combine, their stats, they're averaging about 17 points a game, and they're averaging about 14 rebounds a game.
Right, right.
And that's deadly.
I mean, that's a great combination.
Nice one-two punch.
So, I mean, again, I've seen these guys play, and these guys are playing a really good ball.
What's the record right now, Coach, after tonight's big win?
Oh, we're 21-9.
21-9, Scott.
Good season.
It's a good season.
And I think more is to come.
Now, where do you see yourself in the playoffs, Coach Sullivan?
Where do you see that seeding coming out?
Realistically, I've tried to be honest and look at everything, and I know there are a couple of outstanding teams in Division I, but I really think that we deserve a five or a six seed in the city playoffs, and as long as we're in that top six, I'd be satisfied.
And that'll get you a home game, right?
That will definitely get us a home game.
Okay, now, if you have to, with all your experience and wisdom here in the studio and all the years in the city playoffs, and I know Coach McGlynn will agree with me, there's no one that has Coach Sullivan's experience.
I mean, no one.
There's no one close.
I mean, maybe the guy at Grant, like you said, but I mean, that's a little different level of play.
I mean, Fremont has been playing with the big boys for a long time, and, you know, Grant has not been playing at that level, the same level that Coach Sullivan has been coaching at, so let's tap into your experience for a minute.
Who do you see maybe as the top four in Division I going into the playoffs?
I would definitely say Westchester is the team to beat.
Year in and year out, they're stacked.
They're too deep at every position, and they have very, very good players.
El Camino Real is outstanding.
And they're going to make a run this year.
I think Fairfax is a very good team.
I believe Narbonne High School has really caught people off guard this year.
They have a very good team and are going to be hard to beat.
Right.
I've seen Narbonne play.
Coach T is over there in his first year.
He won at Gardena High School last year and got the job at Narbonne, and he's doing a fine job.
They have a nice team.
You know what?
I would take Fremont over Narbonne though.
I'm telling you, I think that you guys would beat them.
You guys play a little bigger with Lonnie and Craig, a little harder.
They got some good guards, Narbonne, but I would take Fremont over Narbonne, I think for sure.
And then you think maybe you could be fifth?
Maybe?
I think we have an outside shot to be fifth or sixth.
We had a heartbreaker on Wednesday.
We lost to Manual Arts.
Yes, you did.
And that, I think that hurt us.
I think we had an excellent shot to get five if we would have won that game.
So, maybe it knocks us down a peg, but we're right there at that five or six spot.
Who would be that other team that you'd be vying with, do you feel?
Do you have a hunch on who that would be?
Outside hunch, it would have to be somebody from the Western League.
I would say either Palisades or University.
Okay.
Well, I saw University play Westchester last year.
Wednesday night.
And I was at that game.
And Westchester does have a good team.
Coach is right.
They're too deep at every position and stuff.
But, you know, and I like Uni.
I like Coach Ackerman a lot.
He does a fine job.
I like his team.
But, you know what, Scott?
I would still take Fremont, I think.
Yeah.
I still would take Fremont.
I think Fremont is just a little more gritty, just a little tougher.
And guys like Frank here, Craig, they really get in there and mix it up and do some dirty work and get rebounds and make some big shots and block some shots.
So, you know, I always got to kind of go with the city when I can, Coach Sullivan.
Well, I think the Western League is a very good league.
You got Fairfax and Westchester.
But I think the Coliseum League is unique.
The teams that make up the Coliseum League, you have Fremont, Crenshaw, Dorsey, Locke, just out, outstanding teams, manual arts.
Everybody is going to play hard.
You're not going to have any easy games.
And then View Park came on this year.
They're in the Division 5, small schools.
And they would be one of the top three teams if they were in Division 1.
They are that good.
Yeah, I agree.
I saw you play them twice this year, as a matter of fact.
You almost beat them at Fremont.
It was a close, I mean, it was a close, close game.
And, you know, you almost had them over there, I thought.
They're a big guy got tossed out of that game.
And when he got tossed out, I thought Fremont's going to take him down.
But it didn't quite happen.
But they are tough.
And I agree.
If they were in the Division 1, they would be a top three for sure.
And luckily they're not, right?
That's for sure.
It's the teams, the unique thing about the Coliseum League is the teams that you play and the areas that you have to go into.
And there's no other league in the city section like the Coliseum League.
I mean, you've heard the old saying, you've got to go into the hood.
Well, every school there is in the hood, and you've got to come up with it.
Yeah, I agree.
Every school but View Park.
But View Park.
Okay, they're definitely not in the hood.
They're definitely not in the hood.
They're outside the hood looking in.
But the other teams are, and I love those teams.
You know that, Coach.
I love your team.
I love Manuel.
I had Manuel Arts in here last week, and I think they came in here, Craig, and they were in the studio.
They had a great show with us, and they went out.
That was last Friday.
They went out and beat y'all on Wednesday.
And so what I'm going to predict is you guys are in studio tonight.
You guys are going to go out, and your next game is a playoff game.
And I predict that after you come out of our studio, you're going to win the next game.
And I think that we've had that, Scott.
Every team we've had in studio, they went out and won their next game.
It's like the reverse of the Sports Illustrated cover curse.
Hey, I like that.
I like that idea.
So, you know, and that's why if you guys get deep in the playoffs, we're going to bring you in one more time, George, because we have that thing going here where that mojo in here where we get a team in here, they go out and win their next game.
So we're going to be pulling for you guys.
So let's do this, Jeremy.
Let's take a quick commercial break, and when we come back, we'll bring a few other players on.
And we'll get to some more business with Fremont High School.
Here we go.
Look, it's time out with Coach Miller, 14 straight conference championships.
We winners.
It don't stop from the bottom to the ceiling, because all I know is when that we winning.
Full focus, we got a topic to discuss.
High school, prep school, small colleges, another special guest today.
Listen up, it might get a little hectic from the stuff we discuss.
We'll be right back.
That are on DVDs produced and distributed by Scoreboard Media out of Las Vegas, Nevada.

These great instructional videos will really help improve your game.
Scoreboard Media is the place to get them at.
Welcome to the 500 Club.
We the best, my whole team tough.
Close to 100 division ones I built up.
Dedication and hard work.
Step up to the court, I'm like who ready to lose first.
14 times champs, every year earned.
Feet to the court, let me get in my zone.
Hands gripped to the ball, let me get in control.
Non-stop can't quit, that's the winner's quote.
I'ma just keep doing me.
Hear the crowd as they cheer.
18 out of 19, coach of the year.
Time out with Coach Miller, listen clear.
Two times a week, listen to me on the ear.
Over 30 wins, it was for four straight years.
First to win, saved my high school and college career.
Over 30 wins, it was for four straight years.
First to win, saved my high school and college career.
You guys ready?
Okay.
Okay, we're back.
We're live.
We're on the air and we're still in studio.
We're going to be in studio for a little while with Fremont Pathfinders and we have in the sound booth, beautiful June, our official greeter.
Did you all meet June downstairs?
Oh yes, yes, yes.
Okay, when June greets you, as beautiful as she is and she's looking nice and dressed nice, you wouldn't realize that June is pretty tough.
She's actually a longshoreman.
Really?
That's her real job.
She's a longshoreman, but she's in studio with us.
She's our official greeter and she's got a great responsibility to greet our guests and bring them upstairs and of course we've got Jeremy over here.
How's it going?
Jeremy.
Happy Jeremy.
Happy Jeremy.
And a happy Valentine's Day to Jeremy and June and thank you.
To Coach Sullivan and his wife, who hopefully she's good with you being out a little bit late tonight, Coach.
Hey, after 28 years of marriage, it's no problem.
Okay, nice, nice, nice.
You hear that, Jeremy?
After 28 years of marriage, it's no problem.
That's amazing.
That's great.
Yeah, so anyway, we're excited to have Fremont in the house and I'm excited because now we've got Coach George McClinn on the air with us.
Coach George, welcome to our show.
Thanks for having me.
Thanks, Mike.
Really appreciate it.
Well, you know, I support basketball, high school, small college, prep school, and you know, I support you guys in particular.
You know that.
I definitely know that and I appreciate it.
And I really appreciate what you guys do for the young men in the community.
Young men like Jesse Taylor over here, who I know.
I know his family.
I know some of his uncles.
I know his granny.
And, you know, it keeps him out of trouble.
I think that, you know, Jesse is a great example of what you do.
You know, Coach George, Jesse's a neighborhood kid, right?
I mean, he's from right down the block.
Definitely, definitely.
Jesse's the type of kid that you know, I became a coach for.
You know, I want to help the kids in my community because I'm one of the kids that came out of my community.
I played for Coach Sullivan sitting next to me.
I've been knowing him all my life.
Basically, when I got to Fremont, I was a 14-year-old.
And, you know, I went off and became one of those Division I players that he coached and came back and got my degree.
And now I'm a teacher there and coaching under the legendary Sam Sullivan, as you called him.
And that's what I call him because he is a legend.
Definitely, definitely.
But Jesse's one of those guys that I became a coach.
I became a teacher because I wanted to coach.
And so that was my motivation.
And to help the inner city kids in our neighborhood and to let them know that there's better things in life than some of the negative things that are around them.
That's right.
That's right.
And I'm really, you know, gratified to hear you say that.
It's funny.
Scott, I became a teacher because I wanted to coach too.
I didn't necessarily want to be a teacher, but I wanted to coach.
And I, you know, an older coach told me if you want to make any money at it, you have to be a teacher.
You can't support yourself just being a coach and no one's going to pay you to do that.
And they were right.
And coach, you found that out.
And I know Coach Sullivan guided you in that path.
So definitely he's been a great mentor to me.
You know, I couldn't have asked for a better mentor.
You know, I sit back and I watch him coach and see the things that he do.
And I'm getting tips all the time from him.
And I see how he handled people.
And he's one of the best people persons that I know.
You know, I see him meet and greet people that he's been doing it so long that, you know, he knows a lot of people.
So I see how he handles people.
And that's one of the best things that you can be as a coach, as a good people person.
No question.
And I agree with you about that.
Coach Sullivan is an ambassador, not just for Fremont High School, but for the game itself and for all of the LA City area that you guys represent.
And also for the Coliseum League.
Let's be honest.
I mean, you know, I had Coach Ford in here last week who I support.
He used to work with Coach Johnson.
I like Coach Ford.
You know, young coach compared to us.
He's a young coach.
And, you know, and this is his second year.
And so, you know, Coach Sullivan really represents more than just Fremont High School.
In my mind, he represents the essence of what the Coliseum League is.
And the entire community.
You know, everybody comes back and knows what he's meant to our community.
And he's just been honored.
Dino and Drew Lee honored him last year for his 30 plus years in the community and serving the youth and being a pillar in our community.
Yeah, that's right.
I agree.
So Coach McGlynn, now you've got your son over here, which is special because he's your starting point guard.
And, you know, that's got to be special for you.
He's sitting over here to your right.
And tell me about your son as a player.
Well, he's a hard-nosed player.
You know, I've avoided not coaching him growing up through the years of AU ball and YMCA ball.
So I could have his opportunity to teach him and coach him and be his coach as a high school player.
And I've watched him develop over the years.
I wish I could get him to work a little bit harder than he works.
But he is a good hard-nosed player.
He plays good defense.
He's our starting point guard.
He leads us in assists.
He leads us in three-point percentage, even though he doesn't take a lot of them.
But he's our leader on the floor.
And I've seen that because as I've said, I've seen probably maybe five or six of your games this year.
I think he's come a long way, too, from the beginning of the year to now.
Definitely.
Definitely.
He's starting to, the light is starting to come on that he needs to work a little bit harder in the gym, on his game, and on his conditioning.
And the experience and that playing at this varsity level in the tough Coliseum League has definitely made all of our players get better.
Because Coach Sullivan has been preaching all year long from the beginning of the season that once January got here that we were going to be a good team.
And we have developed that way all season long and in the month of January we were 9-2.
That's right.
And getting better all the time.
And we will continue to get better.
So hopefully that will continue in February as well.
Yeah, I think it will.
And I think you guys are just hitting your stride.
It is, it was a tough loss like Coach mentioned last week to Emanuel, or this week, I mean, Wednesday.
That was an unexpected, in my mind, unexpected loss.
I didn't feel like, you know, they would be able to beat you on your home court.
But that sometimes can be a wake-up call going into the playoffs.
And obviously tonight you bounce back, you beat Locke, who's your big rival.
I mean, that's a school right down the street for our listeners that don't know.
We have listeners from all over the world.
And we get calls in here from other countries.
Scott, we've had calls from Australia, Detroit, Texas, Chicago.
I mean, we go worldwide with our show.
New Zealand.
New Zealand, that's right.
And so we, you know, for the listeners that don't know, Coach, describe the rivalry between Fremont and Locke and just how close the schools are in proximity to each other.
Well, the schools are basically, probably I would say about two miles apart.
They're on the same street.
They're both on San Pedro and they, you know, have had rivals throughout the years.
Coach Sullivan probably could speak more about the rivalry between Fremont and Locke because it goes way back to the 70s when Locke first opened up and, you know, took some of Fremont's students.
I mean, they opened up to relieve the overcrowding in the area.
Well, yeah, that's, uh, Fremont was one of the schools that was overcrowded and so they built another high school two miles away.
Runs on the same streets, Avalon and San Pedro.
And so we lost half of the student body from Fremont, went to Locke and made up the student body of Locke High School.
That's right.
And so that's how the rivalry started.
So now when we start playing against each other the following year, it's like, you're playing against guys that you had played with as 10th graders.
Now all of a sudden you're seniors and this guy, you're trying to beat each other and the rivalry just continues.
A lot of the kids know each other from the neighborhood.
They even went to the same middle school and now they're competing.
So Locke and Fremont really, really go at it.
That's right.
There's no love loss, but it's a hard fought game.
Yeah, that's right.
And I tell you what, I've seen those games.
I was at a Locke-Fremont game, not this year, but last year and the year before and they're battles.
I mean, they are battles and intense and the energy in the gym is amazing.
Now, Coach, how did your son play tonight in this big rivalry game versus Locke?
He was steady tonight.
He had a few turnovers trying to make plays and I really don't mind turnovers when you're trying to make plays and get the ball up the floor to your bigs, but he played pretty good tonight.
Okay, good.
Now, let's turn it over to him.
How do you like being the starting point guard and how do you like playing for, obviously, your dad and Coach Sullivan?
I'm welcome to taking on the role.
It's a big responsibility to lead my team and be the floor general and get everybody involved, but I like taking on the challenge and playing for my dad.
It's something I've thought about since I was young and it's been fun for the past two years and I'm enjoying it.
Okay, now, your dad talked about you need to work harder.
Okay.
What do you think about that?
How do you feel about that?
I agree.
My work ethic could be a lot better.
I'm a bit lazy at times, but I kind of had a wake-up call and I'm starting to notice time is running out, so it's time to pick it up.
That's right.
Well, you know, you're a junior and you're going to be a senior next year.
And a lot of these guys that we've talked to, Lonnie already, Craig, Frank, and we're going to talk to Jesse, they're all seniors.
They're all going to be gone.
And so you're going to be one of the few guys back next year from the successful varsity team.
And, you know, there'll be a lot more pressure on you and the whole thing is if you want to have success, you have to be a leader.
How can anyone follow you if you're not given the right example?
I mean, if you want to have a great team, you have to be a leader.
If you want to be a leader, you have to be a team next year.
You're going to have to work much, much harder than you're working now because how can you again be the floor general and be a leader if you're not the hardest worker?
I mean, that just doesn't work.
It doesn't match.
It doesn't match.
I mean, I talk to people all the time about this and you've got to embrace that and it's got to be something you want to do.
It can't be because your dad wants you to work harder.
Coach Sullivan wants you to work harder.
It's got to be you have the internal pride to want to work harder to lead the program next year.
And here's what I say about that, Scott.
And you've heard me say it for years.
Scott's been around me.
He's helped me in my various programs when I was coaching in college.
Scott helped me.
And I always said the same thing.
Your regular season ended right now, today.
You're no longer a junior.
You have to look at this playoff opportunity now as the beginning of your senior campaign because this playoff season wasn't promised to you.
This was not on the schedule.
The schedule was made.
The last game was Locke High School and you won that game.
And now that is over.
So now as you go into the playoffs starting next week, you really have to look at this as the beginning of your senior year.
So what I say is you've got, what, four days to practice, coach?
Four days to practice.
Okay.
What would be interesting to see is if you can challenge yourself in the way I'm talking about when you come into the gym to have your next practice because the first playoff game will be Friday.
Friday night.
Friday night and hopefully at home.
Can you accept that challenge?
And only you can do that.
To come in and work harder and it starts in practice.
Okay.
How you practice is how you're going to play.
We just got through with our post game talk and that was my motivation.
We'll talk to the kids, Mike, about next week how hard we have to work.
It's a new season.
One of the players actually brought that up that it's a new season.
I'm glad you brought that up.
And our work ethic has to be extremely, extremely high during this week of practice and hopefully it will.
And we have leaders that do work hard and will work hard.
Jesse is one of our leaders that will work hard and I'm glad he's here and congratulations to him for being selected to the All-Coliseum League team.
Him and Frank and our other player who's not here today Marquise McKenzie was also selected to All-League.
Okay.
So let's talk about that for a minute.
We've got Jesse over here.
And Jesse you were second team All-League, right?
Yes.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
I appreciate it.
Okay.
And Coach told me about that earlier and I know he was proud of you.
And I know that Coach Sullivan is proud of you and I'm proud of you.
I see, you know, I've known your uncles for a long time and I've known your granny and, you know, you've had a, you're the oldest child in your house of 10 kids, right?
Yes.
And so that's a lot of responsibility.
That's a lot of responsibility, a lot of leadership there at home.
Yep.
And so I think it's a great honor that you made All-Coliseum League and I think that's, you know, something you can be really proud of.
I know I'm proud of you and it's something you can show your family.
And so let's talk about the other players, Coach.
Frank made Frank made second team All-League.
Second team also?
Yes.
And Marquise McKenzie was first team.
He had to leave early tonight.
Okay.
And so that's a great showing, right?
Definitely.
For Fremont.
And Lonnie made honorable mention.
Lonnie made honorable mention.
And Craig didn't make anything?
No.
Wow.
You know what?
Coach Miller has a lot of sayings, doesn't he, Scott?
And I'm gonna bring this one out.
I think some people were drinking Haterade.
They have that Haterade drink out there and it's not like Gatorade.
It's different.
Okay.
It's Haterade.
And if Craig didn't make honorable mention or second team or in my mind even really, to be honest, Craig should have been first team.
Okay.
And I'm gonna say Craig should have been first team.
Okay.
And he didn't make second team or honorable mention.
That means people were drinking Haterade, Coach.
Yeah.
Well, it's a unique way that we do it in the Coliseum League.
You cannot vote for your own player because if you could vote for your own player, then I would definitely put Craig in there.
But I can't vote for any of my own players.
So, it's up to the opposing coaches.
To vote.
And when they voted, they actually gave us Frank and Jesse and Marquise and Lonnie.
So, I was shocked that we actually got four.
Right.
Right.
Well, that's still a great honor for Fremont.
But, you know, I can't believe that Craig was left off that All-Coliseum League team.
I think you should actually create your own All-Star team, Coach.
Well, you know, it's funny you said that.
I think I know where you're going.
It's funny you said that because my show, Time Out with Coach Miller, is sponsoring a unique thing that's going to be an annual thing.
And we're starting off this year and that's going to be not just a game, Coach McLean, but an event.
And we're going to have it at a local college.
And it's going to be a big, big event.
And it's going to be a brunch with an awards recognition.
And it's going to be three games.
It's going to be the South Bay versus the Valley.
This is seniors.
And then it's going to be the East Side versus the West Side.
And they're going to have, we're going to follow that up with an underclass game.
Did you hear that?
An underclass game.
And that's going to be a very elite game, the underclass game, because it's only going to be one game, two teams.
And there's only going to be 12 players on each team.
So there's only going to be the 24 best, underclassmen in all of the city section get selected for that game.
And it's a great honor that we have Coach Sullivan sitting on the advisory committee for this game and this event.
And so Coach Sullivan will get to vote for his own players for that.
There you go.
And so we have a staff that will pick that game.
And the fact that Craig didn't get, selected to be first or second team, honorable mention, is really not very good because he definitely, in my mind, should have been on one of those teams.
And, you know, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets selected to be in this big event that my show is sponsoring.
So it's going to be April 5th.
The brunch and awards banquet starts at 1230.
It's going to be at East Los Angeles College.
We're going to have the two games.
We're going to have the South Bay, the South Bay and South team.
It's not just South Bay, Coach McClendon.
It's the South region really.
But the South Bay is part of that versus the Valley.
And then the East side versus the West side.
I think we have Fremont in the South region.
I'm pretty sure.
Isn't that right?
Yes, that's correct.
We have Fremont in the South.
Yeah.
And you're not exactly in the South Bay, but just for balance, you have to divide the teams up, Scott, and put them in different regions.
And you know, Fremont will be in the South region.
And that's going to be a great event.
It's April 5th at East LA College.
It's going to be a wonderful afternoon and stuff.
And Coach Sullivan is on the advisory committee along with Coach Ron Ford from Manual.
We've got Coach John Bobich from San Pedro.
We've got a few other coaches on the committee.
Joe Reed from HP.
And it's going to be a great event.
And so we need to look for good junior point guards who might be good enough to get selected to that event and look at our senior game as well.
Okay.
So Jesse, let's talk for a minute about your season.
And tell me what's been the most memorable moment that you've experienced this year.
Well, I can't really tell you the most memorable moment.
But I love these guys.
They've been through, we've been through a lot together.
And we had a lot of tough games and we put through some of them.
But unfortunately, some of them, it was like, some of them was wake-up calls.
But we never lost more than two games in a row.
We always bounced back and won the next one.
That's good.
That's a really good sign, isn't it?
Coach Sullivan, the team that can bounce back after a loss.
Well, definitely.
And one thing that I always try to pride myself and the Fremont team on was the fact that they always had the Crenshaws who were supposedly the best team on the west side.
Well, I always said Fremont was the best team on the east side.
And we always had that reputation.
And it made me feel really good always that everybody in the city say, well, they might be the best on the west side, but we know who's the best over on the east side.
That's right.
That's right.
And I would concur with that, Scott.
Let's take a short break.
And when we come back, we're going to wrap up our time with Fremont High School.
And we'll have a wish them well going into the playoffs, Scott.
Jeremy, let's run a short commercial.
Just one.

the air welcome back to time out with coach miller we're having a great show so far huh scott yeah it's been a great show so far okay well we've got a call waiting but we're gonna wait for that call for a minute jeremy and we're gonna introduce coach dave goosen who i've known a long time coach goosen welcome to the show thanks for having us it's amazing to be here haven't seen you for a while i think uh yeah i think i was at venice high last time we spoke that's right you were at venice high school and you had glenn mcgowan yes sir among others among others you had some really fine players who were some of the other great players glenn lyles was that i had montel duhan tell duhan i had a kid named joe dural i had uh kevin mcqueen i had a kid named kevin ellaby that's right kevin ellaby nice little guard yeah kevin green kevin ellaby was super super tough probably one of the toughest kids i've ever coached that's right i remember kevin and of course how can you forget glenn mcgowan yep he had a great career he went to a prep school and uh then he went to pepperdine yep two-time all wcc uh selection he actually was second in the wcc in scoring and rebounding two years in a row behind ronnie turioff that's right and then he's been a pro for a number of years a long time yeah he's played the last eight or ten years overseas he's played in spain he's played in italy he's made the rounds uh been in a couple of nba camps uh one year i think about five or six years ago he was one of the last cuts in san antonio spurs camp so he's been right on the cusp but he's you know had a nice career made a nice living for himself and uh you know doing well for himself good for him i like glenn mcgowan i like glenn a lot and i remember your teams at venice high really good teams and you have a really good team this year you're 21 and three yep we have an amazing team this year um our team chemistry is really amazing we uh weren't really sure what we'd have this season uh we had a really successful season last year the school opened in uh september of 2011 um so the 11 12 season the school opened but we didn't field a team and uh so last year was our first first year in existence and we went 19 and 12 last year we made it to the playoffs we won in the first round second round we ran into the number one seed view park prep and we actually gave them a decent game for about a half and then second half they just wore us down just you know too big too strong too good right and uh so we had two really good guards last year that were both first uh first team all league players going into this year um we lost like 40 points both kids averaged close to 20 points a game we lost 40 points out of our lineup so we weren't quite sure what we were going to have this year and uh we just we did really well over the summer and uh into the fall and uh we've just really really progressed as the season's gone along and right now we're we feel like we're peaking and we're really excited for the playoffs and you're 21 and three this year yeah we're we're we're we're doing well that's nice do you think you'll be a top four seed in you're in division five right for the city we're in division four division four do you think you'll be a top four seed uh the computer rankings going into tonight's game had us as a five seed and we're in division four so we're in division four so we're in division four so we're in division four so we're in division four so we're in division four and then we beat um fulton who uh was undefeated in our previously undefeated in our league so i feel like we have a good chance to get maybe a three or four seed i would say five at the worst um definitely get a home game next friday that'd be nice that'd be nice congratulations on a great year let me take this call before we go any further caller you're on the air um hi it's khalil flowers from manuel arts khalil flowers from manuel arts how are you khalil i'm all right sir good good did you guys win tonight yes sir excellent who did you play uh west adams west adams okay good good how did it go for you uh we started off slow but um at the end we um pushed through and won the game by like 10 okay good good so you're gonna be in division three for the playoffs yes sir okay good so so you guys are excited about going to the playoffs just like fremont is in division one and just like coach guson and his team the valley academy vipers are for division four so uh we're gonna have we kind of have a lot of different kind of teams that come in here we've had a lot of the cif southern section teams in here and some colleges we're gonna have usc and cal state fullerton in here soon um you know we we cover uh you know high school college small college prep school basketball so we're gonna have a lot of teams that come in here and So it's exciting that we're able to talk different levels in here.
We got Manual Arts on the phone, and Khalil's one of their fine players.
He's a great senior.
And Khalil, when you get your information on who you play and when, you make sure you contact me here at the show and let me know so I can get out and see you guys play.
I'm excited about seeing you guys play, and I want to see you guys play soon.
I will do that.
Is that a deal?
Yes, sir.
They had us at 8 on Monday before we beat Fremont and beat West Adams today, so I'm pretty sure we'll move up probably to, I hope, top five, so we'll most likely have a home putt-up game.
That would be really nice.
That would be really nice.
Well, I'll wish you luck on that, and you'll keep me informed, right?
Yes, sir.
Okay, Khalil, I'll talk with you soon.
Thank you.
Thank you for calling in the show.
All right, and good luck on the rest of the season, Coach Goosen.
Thanks a lot.
I appreciate it.
Good luck to you guys as well.
Thank you, sir.
Okay, we got a nice call there, Scott.
So let's get back to Coach Goosen and his team.
Coach, it's been a great year.
You beat the formerly unbeaten Fulton College prep team tonight, and that was a great win for you guys, and that was on the road too.
Yeah, it was on the road, and we were playing a little shorthanded as well.
One of our key players, Nelson Cortez, who's here with us today, unfortunately suffered a concussion in our game at Northridge Academy last Friday, and he's out a couple weeks, and he's a really important player for us.
Okay.
A real tough-nosed rebounder, kind of do-it-all player, and we were without him tonight, so this was a huge win for us.
Now, will he be able to play in the playoffs, do you think?
He's supposed to get reevaluated this week, initially I think they were saying about two weeks, but we're hoping that he gets reevaluated this week and is able to at least play in the first round on Friday, but it's kind of a wait-and-see and see how things go.
Good, good.
Okay, well, we'll be hoping for the best for you and for Nelson on that.
Tell us about the guys that are in studio.
Let's start with over here across from me next to you.
So this is our captain, Sunny Singh.
He's a two-year captain.
He really, truly...
He is the heart and soul of our team.
As Sunny goes, we go.
When Sunny is playing with a lot of energy, our team has a lot of energy.
When his energy drops, our team's energy seems to drop.
Same thing in practice.
As Sunny's energy goes, our team goes, and he's definitely the heart and soul of our team.
A lot of times, though, when a player is described as heart and soul, it doesn't mean that they're talented.
Sunny is definitely one of the most talented players, and he's one of the most talented players in our league.
He'll definitely be a first-team all-league player.
He had a stretch during our season where he had four straight games where he scored 34 points or more.
Wow.
Four straight games, yeah.
That's impressive.
Sunny, how do you score the best?
What's your best attribute in terms of scoring?
Attacking the basket.
Okay, so you're more of a driver than a shooter?
I'm more of a shooter, but my coach always yells at me when the shot doesn't drop and he tells me to attack the basket.
Okay.
Okay.
Now, if someone was scouting, I'm scouting you, Sunny, because it sounds like you know the game.
If you've been a two-year captain, you kind of understand basketball.
If someone was scouting you, would they say he's a better driver or a better shooter?
Probably a better shooter.
Okay.
So are you a lights-out three-point shooter?
I wouldn't say that.
You wouldn't?
No.
Okay.
What would you say?
It's getting there.
I've been working on it.
Okay.
So you're a good shooter?
I'm okay.
Okay, gotcha.
I would say Sunny is definitely a very strong, streaky shooter.
When Sunny is on, he is on.
When his shot is off, then that's when, as he said, I try to encourage him to get to the basket a little bit more because he's super aggressive going to the basket.
But when Sunny is hot, he's hot.
He's had a few games this year.
He had one game where he had 38 points.
He had eight three-pointers.
That little stretch, that little four-game stretch where he had 34 or more, I think he had six three-pointers one game, eight another game, five another game.
So when he gets going, he really gets going.
That's great.
That's good stuff right there.
Collar, we've got another caller here.
Collar, you're on the air.
Uh-oh, they just dropped.
Maybe they hit a bad cell phone area or something.
So it was an 818 number too, so I'm assuming they're from the Valley and they're fans of Valley Academy and they were calling in.
Must have been a canyon.
Okay, there you go.
1-800-893-9562.
That number again is 1-800-893-9562.
If you have a call, for Coach Goosen or Sonny or any of the other people in studio from Valley Academy, if you have a call for anyone at Valley Academy here in studio, you can call in.
We have a call.
Collar, you're on the air.
Collar, go ahead.
Hello?
Yeah, Collar, go ahead.
Hey, Coach Goosen, Sonny.
It's Justin.
Hey, what's up, Justin?
I don't think I didn't see you guys.
I heard you guys be floating today.
Yeah.
I'm proud of you guys.
Thank you.
Thanks, Justin.
Justin was one of the kids I was referring to last year.
Was one of the first team all-league player.
Averaged about just a tick under 25 points a game.
Justin is an amazing player and was just a great leader for us last year.
Nice.
Justin, where are you playing at this year?
I am currently not playing anywhere right now.
I attend COC College and I plan to play for them next season.
I wasn't able to try out this year because...
I wasn't a full-time student.
And, of course, you have to be a full-time student to play.
So, unfortunately, I didn't get the opportunity to try out.
Okay.
But I'm still working on my game, still playing every day.
So, that's definitely on my mind for next season.
Okay.
That's good to know.
Now, do you still go back and see Coach Goosen and Sonny and the other guys at the school, at the gym?
Do you still go over there at practice time and stuff?
Of course.
You know, I'm still...
I try to be as much involved with the team as I can.
And, you know, I'm a fan now.
You know, I still try to come to all the games that I can.
I'm working and I'm going to school, so I can't make it to all the games.
But, you know, you can ask Coach Goosen.
I'm still there.
Okay.
Time and time, whenever I get the chance.
Of course, I'm a fan and I appreciate it.
And I'm proud of the boys and what they've done this season.
I'm still keeping my eye on them.
21-3.
21-3 is quite an accomplishment.
It's an accomplishment, isn't it?
Very.
I think they're doing better than what you did last season.
Yeah.
It's a big thing for them.
Yeah.
Especially since it's the second year of having a basketball program.
That's right.
They're placing the legacy that we started last year, which is great.
Yeah, that's great.
Coach Goosen does a great job.
I've seen him coach for a long time and I know he knows what he's doing.
So, you've had the benefit of playing for him and hopefully you'll get to play at College of the Canyons.
The head coach at College of the Canyons is a former assistant of mine, Howard Fisher.
So, if I can put in a good word for you, I will.
Howard worked for me for a couple years and then he was able to get the College of the Canyons head coaching job after he worked for me.
So, I'll be glad to put in a good word for you and hopefully you'll make that team next year.
Definitely.
I appreciate that.
Okay.
Well, thank you for calling in.
I appreciate your support.
Yeah, no problem.
All right, Justin.
Come out next Friday.
To our game.
I know you'll be there.
Yeah, let me know.
Text me.
I will.
Okay, thanks for calling.
Thanks for calling, Justin.
Okay, Coach Goosen, let's get back to the guys here we have in studio.
So, who's sitting next to me to my left?
This is Kyle Lord.
He's just a sophomore and he's definitely one of our leaders on the varsity team starter as a sophomore.
He was the JV MVP last year, averaged over 20 points a game on the JV team last year.
And then, you know, when Justin and...
Kevin, our other guard, graduated, you know, he was pressed into the fire and did a really good job over the summer and earned, you know, earned a starting spot.
And he's just been doing amazing.
When the season started, I think the day before our first game, he sprained an ankle in practice and had to sit out the first two or three games.
And then we kind of worked him back, you know, back a little slowly.
So, he got off to a little slow start and he's just really hit his stride right now.
And he's definitely been...
He's been peaking the last four or five games.
I think he's had three or four over 20-point games in our last, you know, four or five games.
Wow.
So, he's just been playing amazing.
Wow.
That's good stuff right there.
Now, let me go back to Sonny.
Tell me, how would you describe your teammate?
You play with him.
You start together.
How would you describe him?
He just gets his team ready and he's just a great assist player.
He's just a great wingman.
He's a great player to be there for me.
Our pick and roll game is great.
Okay.
So, you guys play well together.
Yeah.
Okay.
Now, how would you describe Sonny?
Sonny's an overall leader.
Like, the team goes, like, with him.
And I try to help out with us so that the team goes and we win games.
Because, like he said, we're like the one-two punch from the court.
Okay.
Okay.
So, Coach Kusin, are these your leading scorers?
These are definitely our leading scorers, number one and two.
But, you know, both of them bring a lot more...
More to the court than scoring.
As you, you know, know from watching, you know, my teams over the years, we press, we trap, you know, we try to, you know, give teams, you know, a hard time for 32 minutes.
And both these guys are really instrumental in our system and what we, you know, what we try to do.
They've really bought into our system.
They've really, you know, dedicated themselves into getting into tip-top shape.
So, both these guys are amazing, you know, within our system, amazing on the presses and on the traps.
And both of them have really...
Really developed their games.
When I first met Sonny three years ago, I knew Sonny had some potential, but he definitely had some conditioning areas to work out.
And he's gotten himself in just amazing shape.
And when I first met him, his game was a little one-dimensional.
He was definitely more of a driver, you know, and now he's expanded his game to where now he's, you know, an amazing shooter and defender and rebounder, kind of a do-it-all type of player.
That's...
That's...
That's...
That's...
That's...
That's...
That's...
That's...
That's good stuff.
So, Sonny smiled when you talked about he needed to get in better shape.
So, Sonny, what did you do to get in better shape?
Just running on the track every summer.
Okay.
And you were out there doing that by yourself or...
No, with the team.
With the team.
Okay.
Nice.
Okay.
Well, I know one thing is you're going to get in shape when you're playing for Coach Goose, and I know that for sure.
I've got another call.
Caller, you're on the air.
Hey, what's going on, Coach?
Hey.
Hey.
Hey.
Turn down your...
Hey, Kevin.
Turn down your volume.
Who is this?
Kevin.
Kevin who?
Kevin Martinez.
I played for Coach Goose last year.
Oh, okay.
Kevin Martinez.
Okay.
Kevin was the other one.
We had two...
You know, as I mentioned before, we had two first team all-league guards, and Justin was the first one, and Kevin was the other one.
Both of them were amazing players, and both averaged over 20 points a game for us last year.
Nice.
Hey, Kevin, where are you playing at this year?
I'm still working on my game still, but I attend COC as well.
And so hopefully I'm going to play next year.
Okay.
Or actually wherever I end up going, I'm going to play.
I'm trying to play.
Okay, good.
Well, we'll have to talk about that.
If we...
Maybe I can help you do that.
You know, just get a hold of me through Coach Goosen, and we'll see if we can get you on the right track somewhere to be playing.
You sound like you're a serious player and you want to play.
Yeah.
Of course, of course.
I appreciate the help.
Absolutely.
That's what I like to do.
So tell me about playing for Coach Goosen.
I've known him a long time now.
You played for him.
I didn't play for him.
Tell me about playing for Coach Goosen.
It was a lot of fun, actually.
He gave me a green light on the offensive end as long as I played defense as well.
So it was a great experience, to say the least, because I only played my last year in high school.
So it was a good experience.
I definitely miss it a lot.
Sounds like you would miss it because you had a great run last year, and you did so well.
Now, you played with Sonny last year too, right?
Yeah, yeah, I did.
Tell me about Sonny.
Sonny's a great...
He's a great vocal leader as well, and he can lead on the floor through the way he plays.
He can pump you up whenever a teammate's falling down or something like that.
He's not really feeling himself in the game.
So he's a great leader, and he's another great wingman to help you on the court as well.
Okay, nice.
Sonny, you're getting a lot of props here tonight.
A lot of props.
You know, Sonny looks so nice.
He's like a choir boy, so innocent.
His hair is calm just right.
His warm-up jacket should have a pencil guard.
A ruler.
And I'm getting...
I'm getting a lot of props.
I'm getting all this stuff from Coach Goosen and the other players, and I'm getting...
You know, like, that Sonny's like this kind of this quiet assassin or something.
But he looks just so innocent, doesn't he, Scott?
Yeah, it's funny.
Well, sometimes you, you know, especially with the shooter types, you know, you don't see that, you know, that killer instinct until they get on the floor.
Yeah, that's right.
Looks can definitely be deceiving in this case, because Sonny, when he gets on the court, Sonny's got some fire.
Sonny's definitely got a nice motor with him.
Okay.
Well, I'm going to have to come to a game, Scott, and check Sonny and the guys out.
Yeah.
I'm getting interested now, because it's like this dichotomy of, you know, this choir boy look, and I'm getting all these calls and people, Coach Goosen saying that he's this deadly assassin.
So, okay, now, Kevin, thank you for calling in, and I can sense that you really care about Coach Goosen and the program.
And if there's anything I can do to help you get into a team, next year, I will do that.
Appreciate it.
I will definitely do that.
Just get a hold of me through Coach Goosen, and we'll figure out what we can do to help you in any way, okay?
Of course, I appreciate that.
Okay, Kevin, thank you for the call.
Okay, so what I want to do is take a short commercial break, and when I come back, we're going to talk to Coach Goosen's member of his staff and a couple other players.
So, Jeremy, run a commercial for me, and we'll be right back.
Hey, it's Coach Miller.
You're listening to my show, Time Out with Coach Miller.
I want to talk to you today about my favorite car dealership located in beautiful Hollywood, California.
It's called Gem Motors.
Gem Motors is located at 5639 West Sunset Boulevard.
If you want a high-end automobile that's at a great price, whether it's a BMW, a Mercedes, a Jaguar, or a Porsche, go to my friends at Gem Motors.
They have a beautiful indoor dealership located at 5639 West Sunset Boulevard right across from Home Depot.
Go see my friends at Gem Motors.
Tell them Coach Miller sent you and get a special discount.
The phone number is area code 323-962-9696.
323-962-9696.
Thank you, Coach.
State Champs.
High school in J.C.
He was the first coach to do it in California history.
Coach Miller, he can beat any team.
Got shooters on the court and dunkers dunk everything.
He's got to win, so the plan is defeat.
Been coaching on the court before he turned 18.
From 08 going down to 93, he was the conference champs, home of the LACC.
Youngest coach to beat 500 teams, 43.
Everybody came, do it like he.
We're live.
We're on the air.
Scott.
We are at Skid Row Studios, but we are not Skid Row adjacent.
Nope, we're near Skid Row adjacent.
We're adjacent to Skid Row adjacent.
Exactly.
We're really in the jewelry district.
Yes, it's a nice shiny blingy area.
That's right, but we do have big rats downstairs.
Big rats.
Did you guys see any on the way in?
Fortunately, we did not see any.
Well, they do guard the cars.
Oh, they do.
That is cool.
I was a little worried about my car, but now you've put me at ease to know that the rats will guard my car.
They will not break in.
Perfect.
They'll leave your discs.
I guess people don't actually use CDs anymore.
I do.
But these guys, they're probably sitting there going like, what's a CD?
Yeah, these guys don't even know what CDs are.
What's that?
Hey, good point.
Technology, it's too fast.
Yeah, but I have my Johnny Cash and my Nat King Cole Christmas CD in my car.
And you're on iTunes just like Drake.
I'm just like Drake.
I'm on iTunes and I'm on YouTube.
I'm just like Drake.
But cooler.
Just like Drake, but a little cooler.
You know what's bad, Coach Doc Green, is I don't even know who Drake is.
I don't know if Doc knows Drake either.
That's pretty bad, but I don't even know who Drake is.
Now, Kyle, who is Drake?
Call in 1-800-893-9562 if you know who Drake is.
Yeah.
Kyle will help me.
Who's Drake?
Drake is a rapper.
Oh, he's a rapper?
Is he a good rapper?
Maybe.
Maybe?
Okay.
Sonny, is Drake a good rapper?
He's my favorite rapper.
Oh, is that right?
Okay, well.
He created YOLO.
Okay, well, all I know is people tell me that I'm just like Drake because my show's on iTunes.
So if you want to find Drake on iTunes, what do you do?
You just put.
Punch in Drake?
Yeah.
I think you'd probably just go to iTunes homepage.
And you just type Drake?
This picture just pops up like on every square.
Okay.
But if you wanted to find Coach Miller.
That you would have to type in.
On iTunes.
You just type in time out with Coach Miller.
Yes, yes.
So kind of like Drake.
Yes.
Right?
Okay.
And if you typed in Drake and Coach Miller, then you'd probably get about 40 Drake songs and some Coach Miller.
Coach Miller episodes.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, that's still.
But still, I feel like.
You'd be in the same search.
I'm in the same search.
Okay.
And speaking of the same search, I'm searching for a call.
Caller, I think I found you.
You're on the air.
I'm searching for a call.
Caller, I think I found you.
You're on the air.
I think they're listening.
Yeah, caller, go ahead.
Hi.
Hi, caller.
Can you turn down your volume?
This is Regina.
Regina?
Hi, caller.
Can you?
Can you turn down your volume?
I'm already here.
Okay.
Regina?
I'm going to have to drop the call because they're not turning down their call volume and we're just getting feedback.
When you call in to the show, you need to turn down the radio that you're listening to or the computer that you're listening to, the volume, and you'll answer to the phone call, converse through the actual phone because there'll be a little bit of a delay.
Otherwise, you'll hear the echo and you won't hear the conversation.
That's right.
So, Regina, if you're listening, call back in and do that.
And guess what?
We have another call.
Caller, you're on the air.
Hello?
Hi, caller.
Go ahead.
Hi.
How are you?
We are great tonight.
We're excited.
We have Valley Academy in studio with us.
Coach Goosen, Kyle, Coach Doc Green, and Sonny are all on the air with us.
Do you have a question?
Well, I just wanted to say I'm super excited because I'm very proud of Valley Academy.
I'm very proud of Valley Academy.
I'm very proud of Valley Academy.
I'm very proud of Valley Academy.
I'm very proud of Valley Academy.
I'm very proud of Valley Academy.
I'm very proud of Valley Academy.
They've done a wonderful job.
Congratulations to Coach Goosen, Sonny, and all of the players there.
And I'm a mystery mom.
I'm somebody's mother.
You're not a mystery mom.
It's not a mystery in here.
Okay.
Well, guess what?
We're proud of them, too.
They had a great win tonight.
And to close out the regular season 21-3, what a great, great season.
And we're excited about them going to the playoffs.
And I'm sure you know that.
You are excited, too.
Well, I really am excited.
But I think the most important thing, and I tend to get very intellectual, so please accept my apology, Isaiah.
But I watched the team develop, and I've watched the coach form these guys into a team.
And coming from a new school and not having a lot of resources for the basketball team to watch them develop.
And I've watched Sonny and the boys go running over the summer.
And the coach has just been wonderful putting them all together.
And I think it's just a great tribute to him and to his leadership and to the students there, the boys, for just putting in the effort that it took to get to this far.
So congratulations, guys.
I'm so proud of you.
And keep up the good work.
Well, thank you for the – Congratulations, coach.
Thank you.
Thank you so much.
I really appreciate it.
Thank you for the call.
And we're going to actually be talking – talking to some of these other players soon.
Maybe one of them is your son.
So thank you for the call and stay tuned.
Coach Green, Doc Green, how long have you been with Coach Goosen?
This is my first year.
Okay, great.
And tell me what has been your most memorable moment so far this season?
Beating Northridge Academy twice.
Our rivals.
Yeah.
Everyone's excited.
That's kind of like USC and UCLA, Scott.
Yeah, correct.
That's Valley Academy and Northridge Academy.
They're rivals.
Yep, yep.
And UCLA won theirs twice this year.
Against USC.
Yeah.
Yeah, good.
It's very similar.
It is very similar.
That's right.
And Northridge Academy is pretty close to you, right?
Coach Doc Green?
Yes, it is.
That's right down the street, right?
Right.
It's around Zales and Plummer.
Okay.
So it's a big rivalry and it's nearby.
Yes, it is.
Okay, great.
Well, I'm excited that you guys beat them twice too.
I'm excited because you're excited.
So what I'd like to do is I'd like to invite these other young men on the air with Coach Goosen.
You stay on.
And if we could just bring you guys on and we'll switch you guys out.
We'll switch someone with Coach Doc Green, someone with Sonny, and someone with Kyle.
Okay?
And we've got a couple minutes left.
And let's get you guys on.
I like to try to get everyone on the air, Scott, when we get them in studio because it's a good moment for them.
And they can go back onto YouTube.
They go to the Skid Row's studio channel on YouTube.
Go into YouTube.
Type in Skid Row Studios.
You'll find our channel.
We have, what, 26 shows, you said?
24 shows.
24 shows.
Live shows here.
They go worldwide.
We're one of them.
And you find Time Out with Coach Miller.
And you can get on there.
And see these episodes and stuff.
And it's great.
They're live video, live audio.
You know who's not on Skid Row Studios channel?
Who?
Drake.
Oh.
He got canceled.
Wasn't picked up.
Okay.
That's what I heard.
Well, you know, Coach Doc Green and I are the only two people in here who probably don't know who Drake is.
And we've probably never heard a Drake song.
And so, in my book, Coach Green and I are homebreds.
Okay?
All right.
Let me, Coach Goosen, tell me about these guys.
Who do we have here?
Who's to my left?
This is Isaiah Henderson.
Isaiah's a senior.
He's a guard.
And Isaiah is definitely our energy guy.
And his mom called.
Yeah.
And his mom called.
His mom's cool, too.
Isaiah is, you know, definitely our energy guy.
A guy that I stick in the game when the energy is low.
And we need somebody to get some loose balls and play some defense and hustle and, you know, bring the energy up.
So, he's definitely our energizer bunny player.
That's good.
So, Isaiah, welcome to the show.
Thank you.
Thank you.
It's a great honor to be here.
Okay.
Well, it's a great honor to have you here and to have Valley Academy here.
And your mother called in.
And that was cool, too.
And you knew who it was.
You recognized her voice, didn't you?
Well, yeah.
She does that often in events like these.
So, I kind of expected it when I sent her the text message.
The ringer.
Okay.
Nice.
Well, she was a good call.
And you and your team are good guests.
Tell me the most memorable moment for you, Isaiah, this season.
Well, we had a rivalry game against Northridge Academy at home.
So, it was a hard game.
It was a very tough game to play.
So, in the end, we played as a team and we came together and we got the win.
So, it was a well-deserved and well-needed win.
And it was a great moment.
Nice.
And that's one of the 13 wins in a row that we're talking about right now, right?
Yeah.
So far, we've had a successful season.
You know, it's a team sport.
You know, that's exactly what we are.
We're a team.
Maybe some people can even call us a family.
We've grown that close.
And hopefully, we can take the momentum to the playoffs.
Nice.
I sure hope so.
Coach Goosen, who is to your right?
And this is Nelson Cortez.
He's only a sophomore.
And he's the one that suffered the, unfortunately, suffered the concussion in that big win last week at Northridge Academy.
And so, he's been out for the last week or so.
And we're hoping, praying to get him back before the first round of the playoffs because, you know, he's a walking double-double.
Nice.
Nelson, welcome to the show.
Thank you.
It's wonderful being here.
Okay.
Well, it's great to have you here.
Welcome to Time Out with Coach Miller.
Now, Nelson, I know that Coach wants you back on the court.
I know that you also, your health is important.
I'm sure you're anxious to get back on the court.
Let's hear the news here on the air.
We're a live show.
We go worldwide.
Do you think you're ready to play?
I really want to, but honestly, no.
Okay.
Okay.
Well, we have the weekend coming up here.
We have Saturday and Sunday.
Monday's a holiday.
Okay.
Do you think you'll be ready by Tuesday?
Hopefully.
Okay.
A lot of resting.
Okay.
Good.
Good.
That's what I want to hear.
And drink a lot of water, right?
Yeah, a lot of water.
A lot of water.
How many glasses of water are you drinking a day?
Maybe like six.
Okay.
I would suggest you double that.
I would suggest you double that.
We're running out of time on our show, but it's been great to have you on, Nelson.
And I'm looking forward to seeing you play myself.
I'm excited to hear about the walking double-double.
I want to see you in action.
Coach Goosen, who is to Nelson's right?
And here we have another one of our senior leaders.
His name is Bastian Bagastani, and he's your typical hardhat player, defender, rebounder, somebody that you can count on to always be in the right place at the right time, just the ultimate team player.
Nice.
Welcome, Bastian Bagastani.
How are you?
Thanks for having me.
I'm good.
Okay.
It's my pleasure to have you on the air.
Coach Goosen is an old friend, a really, really good coach.
And you guys know that because you're 21-3.
And three years ago, you guys didn't even have a team.
So three years from no team to last year, having a winning record, first year to having a 21-3 team.
So you know what I'm talking about.
Coach Goosen is a great guy, a lot of energy, a lot of fun to be around, right?
Yeah.
He goes crazy on the court.
Yeah.
He messes up.
Yeah.
Like today.
Okay.
A player's coach, though, right?
Yeah.
He's a lot of fun to play with.
I bet.
I bet.
Well, I wish we had a little more time right now.
But I tell you what, I'm glad that you guys made it in.
And I wish you guys well in the playoffs.
Coach Goosen, when are we going to know who you play and when?
We will know.
The seating meeting is tomorrow morning, I think at 9 a.m.
So I'm hoping to know, you know, 10, 11, 11 o'clock or so.
So, you know, probably late morning.
Again, I'm expecting to get about a four or five seed and definitely a home game.
So any of the...
The Viper fans out there that are listening, you know, come out to the Viper Pit next Friday night, seven o'clock and, you know, be loud.
That's right.
That's right.
Do you have a gym on your campus, coach?
Yes, we do.
A really, really nice gym.
And we've been getting some really good crowds and a lot of support.
And especially, you know, when we play those rivalry games against Northridge Academy, Sosis is another one of our rivals.
So we've been getting really, really good crowds, a lot of support.
There's been a lot of pride.
We've been getting a lot of support.
We've been getting a lot of support on campus because we don't have a football team.
So we're, you know, the basketball team is the football team.
We're, you know, we're the main attraction there.
Sure.
I got you.
That makes a lot of sense.
How big is your school, coach?
There's around 1,200 students or so.
So it's, you know, it's a fairly small school as LAUSD, you know, standards go.
Right.
But it's bigger than my high school though.
Yeah.
In Marblehead, Mass.
Yeah.
But still, 1,200 students is 1,200 students.
It's a lot.
And you guys are representing the entire student body when you play.
And, you know, that's a great thing.
And I know that you're going to learn a lot of basketball with Coach Goosen.
Now, what I want to do is wish you guys good luck in the playoffs.
I'd like you guys to call in Friday after your game and give us an update.
You heard tonight, Crenshaw, I don't know if you heard, Crenshaw High School called in tonight.
Manual Arts, you did hear, call in tonight.
And so what we'd like you to do is call in and give us a report, you know, one of the players or two of the players.
And maybe.
Maybe even Coach Goosen call in and update us Friday night.
You know, Doc Green can do that too.
So that way we know what's going on out at Valley Academy.
And I want to, you know, thank you for coming on the show tonight.
Thank you so much for having us.
It was amazing.
We had an amazing time.
And it's always great to be with you, Coach.
I always have a great time, you know, talking basketball with you.
And just want to really thank you.
And, you know, we really appreciate the opportunity to be on.
Oh, it's my pleasure.
And you're going to be, you've been giving me some input into our game.
I mentioned it earlier on the air.
Absolutely.
You heard about it.
And Coach Goosen's been real instrumental in helping us, you know, get some input into that game.
So down the road, we want to get you on the advisory committee for that.
Absolutely.
I'd love that.
In a more official capacity.
So, Jeremy, let's close this show out.
We've had a great show.
Let's close it out with our theme song.
Now, again, guys, just like Dre.
I have a rap song.
So here it is.
And you can get this on iTunes, too.
16 made a dream with this basketball.
Coach Miller won the court and we going hard.
