What's up, loved ones?
You have reached Neighborhood Love Radio.
My name is Johnny Scott Gramercy.
Thank you so much for coming by.
I come to you this week as I do every week with the Pistons.
I'm a solo funk reggae.
Music of the streets, a true American art form.
Tonight, expected in the studio is the Inglewood Open artist.
Excuse me, Inglewood Open Studios.
A couple artists from that, call it a collective.
It's really more of an Inglewood citywide movement.
And they're going to come by and talk a little bit about street life and the art culture in Inglewood.
We're going to listen to some music first.
First up, I got for you Baby Huey and the Babysitters from 1971.
Hard Times is the name of the tune.
And Baby Huey, we lost him a little too early.
recess recess recess recess recess Having a hard time, there's no love to be found Having a hard time in this crazy town Having a hard time, there's no love to be found From my party house I feel like me another Familiar face of greed and a race of brother But to my surprise I find a man corrupt I thought he'd be my brother, he wants to hold me up Having a hard time in this crazy town Having a hard time, there's no love to be found Having a hard time in this crazy town Having a hard time There's no love to be found So many hard times Sleeping on motel floors Knocking on my brother's door Eating Spam and Oreos and drinking Thunderbird, baby No!

Pointer Sisters.
It's an old Sesame Street number, a classic tune.
76, 77.
I dig that tune, man, because it's got a jamming steel drum solo in the middle.
Some weird odd time signature stuff in there, too.
Prior to that, we heard Chocolate Snow, A Day in the Life.
Nice instrumental number.
I think it was a play off of the Beatles tune.
And it started off the set with Robert Glasper, Experiment, featuring Erykah Badu, Afro blue from the Black Radio album out in 2010.
So, it's a good song.
It's a good song.
recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess part of the city of inglewood uh the representative inglewood open studios welcome thank you thank you yeah uh can you tell the loved ones here a little bit about uh inglewood open studios please go for it michael okay uh this is the eighth year uh it's primary uh artists run artists run uh group okay that better yeah i can hear you okay good and so it's like a you know a group of artists that decided eight years ago to come together and create this uh uh open public a venue for for people and i think at a time was like about eight ten artists started by um excuse me renee renee fox and kenny bummer right and um eight to ten artists in the first year it's like over 50 now right exactly yeah and it was funny part because some of us who've been living in england for a while like who are these people they didn't invite us to the party where you've been hiding yes do you find that are people kind of uh attracted towards inglewood now has something changed oh yes uh it's definitely one of those communities that's kind of like kind of forgotten not think about because of all these stereotypes perceptions but england was for a lot of reasons one of the coolest places the location also the you know as far as for artists cheap inexpensive places to rent or find spaces that are neglected and upgrade them artists have for generations been doing that every communities and stuff yeah that's hardest debate right there yes exactly exactly elbow room and cheap rent oh yes recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess recess artist community at large.
And I've been there for about three and a half years.
It's a really great community.
And when I moved back to Los Angeles, I was really surprised to hear that Englewood was even on the creative map.
Yeah, I think a lot has changed in LA.
I don't know what it was with the 90s, man, but I was trying to tell somebody about that.
Something about the 90s, for some reason, everybody got shot at in the 90s.
I don't know why.
That's for sure.
And it didn't matter what you were doing.
It was just, I don't know, maybe the drugs are on the streets, maybe a little bit of the gangster rap had an influence on that.
And some people glamorize.
I don't really know.
But I feel a lot better nowadays just walking anywhere.
Walking around here, downtown.
Oh, yeah.
Walking over in Boyle Heights.
Exactly.
And I feel like there's a lot more community love wherever you happen to be at.
Neighborhood love.
Oh, yes.
That's definitely going on in Englewood.
Sure.
And I've watched it grow over the past couple years that I've been there.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Neighborhood, loved ones real fast, Englewood Open Studios is going down Saturday and Sunday, November 9th and 10th.
It's an all-day affair in, I assume, a pretty family-friendly environment.
Oh, yes.
And for more information, you can always check up on EnglewoodOpenStudios.com.
Again, Saturday and Sunday, November 9th and 10th from 12 o'clock to 5 o'clock.
And if you could give sort of, is there an epicenter or like some place where somebody should go first?
Apart from your studio.
No, that was hard now.
It is hard.
We are sort of a natural epicenter because of the scale of our buildings and they're easy to get in and out of.
Where's that?
What major cross street?
Sentinella and La Brea.
Yeah, which is major artery.
So everybody in LA knows where La Brea is.
Yeah.
Easy to find.
Okay, cool.
How's the food around in the immediate area?
Ooh.
Michael will have to speak to that.
Oh, yeah.
There's a wide variety.
I mean, there's food for the health conscious.
We have one of the best.
Yeah, we're not here to talk about that.
Oh, I'm sorry.
And we also got some, we got some meat too.
I want to hear about Mexican food.
I want to hear about Southern food.
Oh, I was about to get there.
Okay, okay.
We got it all.
We have it all.
We have like a soul food kitchen for those who with the soul food flavor.
And stuff like that.
And we also have a Caribbean house for the best.
Let's not turn the page there.
Like what?
Soul food.
Like the standards, you know?
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
Yeah.
And Caribbean, okay?
Yeah, yeah.
Oxtail, things like that.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Yep, there's, there's some plantains.
Oh, I kind of forget.
Uh-huh.
Roscoe's.
Roscoe's, for sure.
Yes.
Yeah.
We're checking them off.
We got there right there on Manchester, right by the freeway.
You know, you know when you get people from out of town and like, oh, you know, you have to do something.
You got to do the, maybe the Venice thing or something.
You really have to do the midnight at Roscoe's thing.
Oh, yeah.
I think it's, it's a whole nother world.
That's the L.A.
thing.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And, uh, but it, but the problem is, okay, let's say, let's say you go out on the town a little bit.
You have a couple Sherry's.
You end up at Roscoe's and you're having a great time.
When you wake up in the morning, it smells like the Crisco fairy came and just, and just painted your whole face and mouth with grease and oil.
Oh.
And it's, it's a, it's a grease hangover is really what it is.
Pretty much.
That's an indication of a good time, right?
It is.
Pretty much.
That's cool.
Okay.
Saturday and Sunday, November 9th and 10th, Inglewood Open Studios.
It's essentially open door policy.
All the local businesses and art galleries and everyone's got their big welcome mat out and you can come by and check out.
Oh, yes.
Yeah.
And everyone's got And it's a really great opportunity for anybody who's to come in and see how artists work and...
And it just sounds like a fun day.
Yeah.
It's a good day.
I like to celebrate different neighborhoods in LA so like that sounds like a great way to come down and get a bite to eat and check out some great art, meet some cool people, enjoy the sunshine and maybe some good music.
Individually, I had artists.
I was looking up both of your guys' work online and I think what I'm really impressed by, first of all, is a lot of tactile work and that's really fun for me and it comes, that doesn't always come through online because we're talking about a two-dimensional photograph, you know, but there's a lot of depth in the work and Michael, you do a lot of public work as well, is that correct?
Correct, yes.
And are you, do you make your living through the arts?
Pretty much.
Yeah, I've pretty much been independent for quite a while.
I also do a little teaching, work with non-profits and also I'm a board president of Ingle Culture Arts, another non-profit.
And I do, yes, I do quite a bit of public art.
In fact, the most recent public art piece I did was actually at the Forum where I did two pieces.
One is a mural on the history of the Forum.
Oh, wow.
It covers the music, the sports, so the popular images, you know, from the Showtime to the Kings to Muhammad Ali, I mean, the whole gamut.
Yeah.
And also I did a series of medallions that have on the ground areas of the public art.
It's called The Parking Lot where when people jog in the community, they can jog around and, you know, see these parts of instruments that was made graphically.
So we had them embedded in the ground.
How big?
They're like about 36 inches, about 54 of them.
Okay.
So can't be missed.
If you're jogging around there or you come to the concert, you know, they're right around each corner.
That's awesome.
Yeah.
And then, Deb, first of all, Deb, your website, Deb Lambert, Lambert, sorry, L-A-M-B-E-R-T, L-A-M-B-E-R-T.com.
And did I do, do I have that right?
It's Debora Lambert.com.
You're right.
So sorry.
D-E-B-O-R-A-H L-A-M-B-E-R-T.
So sorry.
That's okay.
Dot com.
And looking at your texture stuff right there, it's, I like, I like the bold colors very much.
Where again, where again is your studio?
My studio is at the Beacon Arts Building at 808 North La Brea.
And Michael's studio is in that complex as well.
Oh, cool.
Yeah.
So it's, it's a one-stop shop.
She gets her papers.
And once again, one more time, they're representing Inglewood Open Studios Saturday and Sunday, November 9th and 10th down there in Inglewood, California.
And it's an all-day affair, family friendly, sunshine, food, art, Inglewood Open Studios.
For more information on that, go ahead and check out InglewoodOpenStudios.com or you can always email me, Johnny Scott Gramercy at RadioSancho.com.
I'll see you next time.
I'm Jack Black out of Detroit.
Check it out, loved ones.!

Prior to that we heard Bus People Express.
Sort of a pseudoname from the German band Poets of Rhythm.
And some other pseudonames like The Woo Woos.
The Pan Atlantics.
Augusta Georgia is the name of that tune.
And I believe that's re-released through Daptone Records.
Prior to that we heard 24 Karat Black.
The best of Good Love Gone.
From the Gone The Promises of Yesterday album.
