📄 Transcript [show]

Hi, this is Jello Biafra. What should you rather have? A pint of booze if you're a recovering alcoholic or a pint of cacophony no matter what or who you are? Speak into the mic, bitch. Say that into the microphone. Keep on rockin' in the free world, and I mean rock, not hop-punk. Not indie-poo. Not middle-of-the-road, Miley Cyrus-y dreck. You're a freak with a microphone. Oh, my, my. Welcome to another episode of A Pint of Cacophony. My name is Dan Pacinello. We're sitting here at Skid Row Studios. Later on, we got the jigsaw scene. Mr. Dennis and Jonathan from that band are going to join us for an interview. We're going to play some tracks off the new release, Old Man Reverb. It's going to be great stuff. But first, I just feel like talking about this because we got a special guest here. And Alex. Before the show, Alex and I were shooting some pool at Casey's Pub right down the street. We meet there every Monday. We get some dollar fries, a couple IPAs. It's good stuff, right? Yeah, yeah, we do. So everybody was talking about this Emma Watson speech that is changing the world or something or other. And we thought, damn, it'd be great to talk to her about it. Or at least another L.A. local, perhaps, that is a young woman and who might have those same views or opinions on that same subject. And on our way back to the studio, we saw none other than Selena Gomez standing outside of 7-Eleven, right there on the street. And she was screaming at some rats and stuff. And we're like, hey, Selena, is that you? And she was like, yeah, that's me. And we're like, hey, why don't you come down to Skid Row Studios and talk here on a pint of coffee? Selena? What's up, what's up, Dan? What's up? Oh, wow. You know, Emma Watson shared her views on feminism. She had some really, really great stuff to say. Much respect. Just curious, what do you think? I mean, you're her age. I'm just like. Okay. All right. So I just want to say, according to Fallopian's 428, thou shall not mess with women's reproductive rights. Right? Right? I mean, okay. So let's let. You know what, Dan? Sure. Dan? Yes? Listen to me. Listen. If February is Black History Month and March is Women's History Month, what happens the rest of the year? You want to know? I'll tell you what. What? Discrimination. Oh, okay. Discrimination. Discrimination. Mm-hmm. And let me ask you this. Okay. So my birth control goes against. I guess so. God's will. Doesn't that mean your Viagra goes against God's will? I guess so. What if he doesn't want you to have sex again? What if that's not his will? You see what I mean? I see what you mean. Sure. Also. She's fired up. Oh, this is real. This is real. Okay. So I want you to. I'm going to tell you this right now. Mm-hmm. My female inspirations. Wonder Woman. Okay. Don't laugh. That's not funny. The comic book character. Sure. Well, yeah. She can fly. Uh-huh. Anyway. Um, Octomom. Octomom. Yes. Female inspiration. Exactly. She don't need no man. No man. She had eight children with fertility. Well, she needed the state's money. I mean. No. She still cheated herself. But go ahead. Continue. Continue. And Lupita. She's my housekeeper. Lupita. Lupita. She's a strong woman. Sure. Okay. So what's your number one rule of feminism then? According to Mean Girls, the number one rule of feminism. Do not date your girlfriend. Girlfriend. Boyfriend. So I avoid that. And just so everyone knows, my girlfriend. What's up, Justine? I miss you. Justine? Justine. Justine Bieber? Is that what you're talking about? He's my girlfriend and boyfriend. Both of them. Together. And that's the rule of feminism. It seems like we got somebody online. Yeah, yeah. Who's that caller right now? I think we have Evan Watson. Evan Watson? For real? Yeah. Emma. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. What's going on, man? Oh, Emma. Emma. Hey, how you doing, man? What's wrong with your voice? Well, I got a change, yeah? You got a change? What kind of change did you get? I got a sex change. You got a sex change? No shit. I mean, you just did that speech last night or yesterday over the weekend. Already sex change? Oh, quick change, mate. Quick change. Here's the thing, yeah? Mm-hmm. He for she is only good if men are with us, yeah? So I was like, how do I get men with them? You know, I can't fuck all the men, yeah? Yeah. So I became men. Because then I can, like, they can't fuck me. I can take them. But they appreciate that. Huh? Now I'm in charge. Men are following me now. So you're infiltrating the system from within, basically. Yeah, there's no time to campaign if I'm fucking dicks all the time. Right? Jeez. Like, let's fucking seriously, dudes, clean your dicks. Like, do you wash dishes when you're done with them? I guess not, right? Oh. Emma. Yeah. That's what we gotta do to Washington, eh? Or not we anymore. Well, we have Selena Gomez here. Yeah, and she has... Yeah, I like that. Yeah, you like her? I like that. Emma. Emma. Emma. You sold out. Don't you know that females' bodies is what feminism is? Like, we run the world with our bodies. Like, we get whatever we want. That's what feminism is, right? We get what we want. Yeah, you want me? No. You had... You want me? What? Wait. No, you have... Now you don't have tits? You don't have... Wait, you didn't have them before. I got whatever you need. I'll go back. I'll go back. You don't have ass. You can't... I put tits on. What's with the booty? No booty. No, you... Wait, you didn't have a booty. You didn't have a booty that I need. You got, like, that equal opportunity bum, you know? Yeah, I said that. I can't tell if the new sex change male version of Emma Watson's hating on you or not. You want me to make an accent? This is the accent. I was born with. I've come to a recollection. No, it's not about your accent. It's Leviosa, not Leviosa. God. That was you, right? You're talking about fallopian, eh? I'll show you something about fallopian 24-7, you know? Emma. Yeah, it's a good one. You're just the way I like my coffee. Whitewashed and skinny. It's Leviosa. You like Wonder Woman? Not Leviosa. God. You feel you're invisible, yeah? Don't talk about Wonder Woman. Oh, man. You guys are going to be angry. Why don't we go into this next song break? Thanks for you women, I guess, for the conversation. What's up? You have a good evening, Emma Watson. Facebook me, Selena. I will Facebook you. No, I'm Selena. Me. No, I know, but I'm going to Facebook her anyways. I want to see what the new version looks like. This is the Neighborhood Brats. We're going to go into song block here, and then we're going to bring the Jigsaw scene in. This is a pint of kickoff. Thank you. Yeah. On our way to hook up with legendary tracker Gus Hayden, we encountered many jungle animals, including our furry relative, the monkey. Monkeys make up over 80% of the world's monkey population. Hundreds of ants are eaten each year by monkeys. Researchers believe that these numbers were the result of a study that was conducted in the United States. The study was conducted in the United States. The study was conducted in the United States. The study was conducted in the United States. The study would be far less if ants were the same size or bigger than monkeys. Wow, look at that. Those balls are sensational. To a lion, these balls are called a sack lunch. The As of this morning, there are 40 of these balls of this type of planet. far less if ants were the same size or bigger than monkeys. Wow, look at that. Those balls are sensational. To a lion, these balls are called a sack lunch.! We shall turn you down. I don't find those balls anymore. They've got the power, got the heart. So now I'm awake, and now I see things. Dreams of the past, fly in your eyes. It goes blind, it runs from fainting. So be your own. I'm not here to run this town. I don't find those balls anymore. They're good at all, they're good at two. I don't find those balls anymore. They're good at all, they're good at two. I don't find those balls anymore. It's all about power, it's all about hope. And in West Virginia, faces assault charges after police say he passed gas and fantasy. The officer, I mean, don't laugh. After the man was already arrested for DUI, according to police reports. I can't even get through this. He passed the gas so loudly, the officer said, it was quote, very odorous and created. And the CD comes with the CD. The CD also comes with the CD. Right. Surprising, isn't it? The cassette doesn't come with the CD. But you guys also do have a cassette. We do. Yeah, and this is on Burger Records. Why don't you tell us how you guys made that happen? Just because Burger is such a kind of happening thing right now. A lot of youth, but then they're also paying respects to a bunch of guys that have been around. A bunch of old-timers. Yeah, a bunch of old-timers. But they fucking matter, you know what I mean? Yeah. There's the cassette from Burger. Where's our camera? This one. Well, those guys are into cassettes. That's why we did it. We like the cassettes. They like the cassettes. So it all worked out. You notice it happening and you're like, hey, let's move into this route too. We're up for anything. Which is what I love because you can get old-man reverb on pretty much any format that exists on this planet. It exists. We got vinyl, we got CD, it's MP3 download, and I'm holding the cassette myself. There you go. Can we also get the music videos on Laserdisc? Do you guys do that as well? No more Laserdisc. No more Laserdisc. What are those? That's before my time. That's the big DVDs. What is it like for a band that came up in Los Angeles? Idiots with guitars doesn't paint the most flattering picture. It's comical, but what's it like? You mean, what was it like? Yeah. I mean, you know. We've been through every period of music you could imagine. Well, which I understand. Yeah. Well, I mean, when we were playing the clubs, in the late 80s, LA was very red-hot chili peppers. Right. And very Guns N' Roses. It was a lot of, every band was imitating either one of those. A lot of hairspray and spandex. Yeah, just, you know, we weren't that. You know, so. What did you think of it though while it was happening? I hated it. Yeah? Yeah. I mean, yeah. Did you mock it, or were you just kind of silent? It just wasn't our thing. We only mocked it in private. I mean, there was another. Behind closed doors. There was a scene, we would play club lingerie and Rajis and more of a punk rock kind of places. Yeah. Because we were so weird compared to the normalcy of people like Guns N' Roses were normal. That was rock music. Right. You know, so. It was weird, but it was fun. You know, we played shows and drew people. We made a record and you know, we kept busy. We toured. We toured a lot back then. We'd go to other cities like Fresno and Tucson, Arizona and get great responses. You know, so it was fun. So we did that a lot. We were, we realized it wasn't us. Which is an important thing to realize. You come to own yourselves and then here we are sitting here with your new record. Our new cassette. Yeah, and everybody's giving a shit about it. So like, I mean, it took that to get this. I mean, come on. That's gotta mean something. It was worth it. Right. I think. We're gonna go to another song break here on A Pineapple Coffee and we'll come back and talk some more. I'm grateful to have the Jigsaw scene here. Thanks for having us. We're here at Skid Row Studios. We're gonna go to the new Black Lips and some Tijuana Panthers. And then to the new Jigsaw scene. Let there be reverb from the Old Man Reverb. I forgot about the beer. You want some? How about some ether? What? Never mind. Let there be reverb, the old man said. Let there be reverb. Let there be reverb. Welcome back to A Pineapple Cacophony. My name is Dan Pachanillo. We're sitting here at Skid Row Studios, and I got Mr. Dennis Davison and Jonathan Lee here right in front of me from the jigsaw scene, whom we just heard with a Let There Be reverb off of the new record, Old Man Reverb. What's it like hearing that back on the speakers? Great. Freaky, man. Freaky? Never gets old. That's a good place to be. So you were just telling me that a video for this song, Let There Be Reverb, just came out today. Today, it's at the Blurt Magazine website. Blurt Magazine website. What's the video like? Tell us about it. We had fans submit video of them playing Cowbell, Will Ferrell style, and Dennis actually edited the whole thing together. We got about 70 submissions, and it starts with a newborn baby, which somehow we found. Hold on. You got a newborn baby playing Cowbell? We got a newborn baby holding a Cowbell. Ah, I see. Born with a Cowbell. We should have animated that baby to play that Cowbell. Like the dancing baby. Exactly. And it goes, people progressively get older and ends with a senior citizen, but they never stop playing the Cowbell. That's great. I can see that to that song. We should have ended it with a dead guy in a coffin. We could have easily arranged that. Yeah. We're going to have to re-edit this. If you follow us on Facebook, we'll grab that link and share it around so people can see what we're talking about. So you mentioned earlier that you've been playing some of the songs off Old Man Reverb since the 80s and 90s, like Die Laughing, Understand, and Abide, which are all on this record. Yeah. Abide we played, that was one of the first songs we ever played when we met. Yeah. So how did you- That song was probably written 20 years before you were born. You think so? What year were you born? Take a guess. I'm just curious. 2004. Whoa. I don't know. I was born in 1989 actually. It was written like six years before you were born. Right on. So how come since then, how come it ends up on album in 2014? I'm not complaining because it's a fucking amazing song. Well, we used to play it in the 80s and people would just be baffled. There were people just kind of looking at us. But now everyone loves it. It didn't make sense. Yeah. It didn't make sense then. It didn't make sense to them. But now people are kind of more open to anything. Right. They've heard soundtracks and hipper bands use elements. So, you know, people are- Yeah. You couldn't find kids that were into Frankie Lane and Ennio Morricone back then. But now with the internet, you can like look everything up and you- Kids like Johnny Cash. Yeah. People aren't as baffled by like those kind of influences as they used to be. They think it's cool. Yeah. I guess. It's a little bit more current, I think, which is great. We'll take it. Yeah. So what are some of your influences? I mean, throughout the years, the ones that stick. Wow. I mean, growing up, I was into like Lou Reed, Bowie, Iggy and the Stooges. Oh, you're preaching to my choir. Yeah. Those were like- I like that stuff. That's like the unholy trinity for me. Of course. Yeah. And then I'm a big Scott Walker fan. Cool. Like Love. Yeah. A lot of different stuff. Love was a big influence on us, especially when we were starting out. Right. Yeah. So. Awesome. What are your highlights in your career, so far as you'd see up until now in the 2014? Our highlights? Yeah. Oh, now you've stumped us. Oh, yeah? Yeah. I mean, you know. The ones that you stick, that you're like, hey, fuck yeah, I did that. We got a Grammy nomination. Well, hey, that's a start, right? Yeah. Yeah. We had a song in Futurama. Oh, cool. It was pretty cool. Yeah. Is that it? That's two things. We got a Grammy nomination and a Futurama. The new album is the highlight. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's the one that, no, I mean, I left the crap out of playing, so we're gonna keep doing that. As veterans of the industry, I mean, what do you guys think of today's music scene? I don't know. It's a tough one. You know? I mean, there's plenty of good stuff, but it might not be what's popular. You know? I don't know. What advice would you give to like somebody younger, like walking into Guitar Center, Sam Ashford, for the first time? Get out of here. Go home. Go back to school. I would say do what you want. I mean, I don't know. Go home. Go back to school. I would say do what you want to do. Don't try to, I mean, so many bands that we were friends with over the years tried to do this and that, whatever they thought was popular. Right. Whereas we've done the same thing. You know, we add instrumentation and develop it. Play to the trends. Yeah, we don't. We play what we want. We always will. A lot of people will give it a couple years in a band, and it's like, oh, well, that's not catching on. We're not getting the buzz. They drop it and move on. And then they'll move on, change costumes, start a new band, you know? We never did that. Yeah. We didn't do it to be popular or try to get rich. We do it because we want to make records. Yeah, just be yourself, right? And basically, what are you guys' plans for the immediate future? Well, we're going to go back in the studio and record a couple new songs. Cool. Next month, I think. You guys just finished a record, and you're like, you know what? We're not done. We're going to track some more. Yeah. Another one. Yeah. So that's the next thing. What is that going to be? Like an EP or just a couple extra releases? No. It's a secret. It's a secret. Oh. It'll be a full album. It'll be an album. Yeah. Oh my God. There's a twist to it. There's a twist. We don't do anything normal. No, they don't fucking half-ass anything here at the Jigsaw Scene. I'm stoked. And we're playing a record release party on October 6th, but it's a secret also. Okay, so hold on a second. So you're playing a record release party on October 6th, but it's a secret. Don't tell anybody. So we can't talk about it. You can't tell anybody. But it's on October 6th with the Jigsaw Scene. It's at a house in Silver Lake. But it's a secret in Silver Lake. In fact, it's such a secret that he gave you the wrong date. Is it October 4th? Oh yeah, it's October 4th. Oh, October 4th. You can come on October 6th. It's right. It's October 4th. When does the secret get announced and we can actually share it with people? You can't. Oh. It's actually in somebody's house. If we tell you, we have to kill you. We're going to kill you anyway, so it doesn't matter. This is going to be the last night anybody hears from me. The last night. The last night. The last night. The last night. Because I'm sitting here with a Jigsaw Scene. We're going to go back to another song break, hear another one off of old man reverb. We're going to hear Abide actually at the end of the song break, and we're going to find out how to get the record, where to follow you guys, and all that jazz, and we're sitting here at Abide & Goffney. My name's Dan. Listen up. They say they welcome some of the panel's recommendations, but money will be a key factor as to whether or not they'll be implemented. But one thing money can't buy is your mama. She's for free and everybody knows it. Robert Gilmartin, News Center 7, Sweetwater. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. I hear mariachi static on my radio And the tombs they glow in the dark And I'm there with her in Ensenada And I'm here in Neville Park That's the spirit. Thank you. Thank you for your honesty. Now fuck off and die.
