hello and welcome to vortex radio by vi today's episode is called primal so today in studio i have charlie of many of odd nature that some of you may or may not remember from dark mark show dark mark has a show on hi dark mark on thursdays at eight o'clock so charlie thank you for being in studio today thank you how is traffic surprisingly not that bad so it's it's my new favorite question how is traffic okay well last year it was really packed around this time of year so hopefully or fortunately i think people seem to be inside so it is black friday happy black friday to everyone out there listening live it also happens to be my little brother's birthday he turned three today oh happy birthday little brother yeah he blew out his candles right before i left three oh that's right you said three years old a whole big one two three jesus he's like a little midget but you know he's not actually a midget just midget size he's taller than he used to be anyway so how is your new album uh not working on it work in progress um well it's a work in progress yeah so you can tell us about that um frustrated mastering is a bitch so how long has many of odd nature been around In 2008, I started it. It was right after I got out of school. And it was a three-piece band at the time. And then 2009, I closed it to work on promotions and stuff. I got involved with a lot of the local clubs and such. And I reopened it in 2010. I actually made it many. So there was, you know, I had percussionists. I had all these added instrumentalists and a big little show. We did the Carnival Noir that we talked about over at Dark Marks. So, yeah, it's sad that I haven't made an album yet, but in time, in time. But it's a work in progress. Yeah. I just get, you know, the problem is I get really picky about the quality of the sound. And, you know, I went to school to learn how to do this crap myself so I could, you know, get that sound I want. But it's tricky. Like the mastering part is tricky. Balancing the tracks and keeping the body and all that. It's a bitch. But we're working. We're working on it. Yeah. So what is it that you're working on right now specifically? Is it your sound? Is it? Just the mastering. So that when the finalized piece is thick and full and loud. And, you know, right now it kind of has that wiener sound. If I bounce a track and I compare it to like, you know, something in high production, I mean, it's just really weak. I want to learn how to keep that body. I'm learning some tricks. But I'm getting better as I go. Just I need to practice more and more. It just gets tough because I do all this other stuff during the week and it gets a little bit in my way. So what do you do during the week? What do I not do? I do a lot. I work a few different gigs. You know, got the office administrative job. Keeps me organized. In downtown. Yes, keeps me organized. I work for a couple of gyms. I work for a couple of clubs. I do promotions for them. And then my band, Writing McClure. Mixing, all that. Promotions. I mean, like, always working. You're a girl that wears many hats. And I remember you just had a music video recently. Yes, actually. Yeah. For Eat You Alive. Yeah, yeah. I think we talked a little bit on Dark Mark's show. I think Cleve Hall, he's going to be on his way. But he was a cool helper in that, you know, we had a zombie video. And he was able to do a lot of the effects. Do we have a collar? We have a collar. You know, I just played his song a couple of days before in one of my spin classes and I get a call or I get hit up. I forget. Was it Cleve or... Yeah, it was Cleve. He asked me if I wanted to do this gig and it was a benefit show. It was a food drive for... I... I forget the limousine company. There's a charity. There's a limousine company. There's this food drive. You know, people bringing turkeys and cans and all this and, you know, help feed the poor. It was awesome. And I got... You know, we got hit up to play this gig and it was amazing to be able to play with him. And... Anyways, Michael Arnaldi, he's the guy who kind of, you know, does all this. His birthday's coming up next month and we're doing a little toy drive. We're mixing it. We're mixing it where we're combining events. He does his annual toy drive and then I was coming up with this... My drummer made this suggestion. Hey, you know, all these bands have like a Christmas song. Why not do a Christmas song? And I thought about it. I'm like, why not do a Christmas event? Because... But Charlie never does anything small. When she does something, she does things big. I kind of go crazy. Big, big, big, big, big. And she does things in a very big way and in a very nice way and they're amazing live. Yeah, thank you. I say she should do a live album as well. I would probably get out of my way a lot easier if it was a live album. I think she should do two. Because you're limited on the quality of a live album. Yes. You're really limited. Well, they can just come if they want to donate gifts. It's an unwrapped gift, because we have to... And then we'll deliver those to the children's hospital. There's money you can donate too. Anyways, I know this secret and I asked him to perform and I thought it was pretty awesome that he would. Awesome. Yeah. To me, it's a pleasure to have these guys up there because to me, I really look up to them and it's cool to have them. Yeah. Well, that is wicked. He is wicked. Those are things that are coming up. And now going back to the events that just passed. Oh, yeah. So, aside from this charity, you do lots of different charity events. Yeah. You know, it's weird. It's weird. Like when I thought about it, in fact, the first show we ever played was a benefit. In 2008, I used to do a lot. I mean, for a few years, like as soon as I moved back to Los Angeles in 2006, I stopped using a car and my way of getting around was with a bicycle. And I remember... Somebody made the... Somebody threw up the suggestion of doing the 2009 AIDS Life Cycle. It's a bike ride from San Francisco to LA. It's like seven days, like 575 miles. And I was... You know, my eyes opened up. I'm like, you know, I was excited with the idea. But then they told me in order to do the ride, each person would have to raise $3,000. And I was like, fuck. You know, like... You know... You're like, can I just sneak in? I felt something in my... There was this feeling I had in my stomach that I really like... It was this... This excitement of wanting to do it, this fear I couldn't, but more of me wanted to do it. And I said, you know what? I'm gonna try this. And it was just after I finished school. I just started the project. And this is actually before... Did I already plan on being the singer? Because I wasn't originally planning on singing in this project. I was just gonna have a singer, but auditions went bad. But anyways, we... So I decided, you know what? I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna throw three shows in Los Angeles to raise the money for it. Yeah. I actually ended up... In total, it had to be $6,000. Because me and my friend at the time, we were gonna do the ride together. So we had to raise $6,000 in total. So suddenly I'm calling up Guitar Center. I'm calling up all these Schecter guitars, Coffin Case. I got all these people to help with this raffling thing. And I threw three shows. The first one was at MI. I forget what they call that. The Passage. They had this little studio in the Passage. Second one was at this bar called the Vine Bar, Off of Vine. And third one was at what used to... It's no longer there, but the Knitting Factory. Yeah. It's in the middle room. Joe Sutton and Club Vodka helped us out with getting that spot without any cost. We just had... There's certain requirements that we had to meet, but we were able to meet the requirements. We packed the shit out of that place. I had Dizzy Reed, the keyboardist for Guns N' Roses. I had him hosting all three of the events. Melrose Larry Green, he came in from the Howard Stern Show. He came in for the third event. It was fucking... It was cool. I had all... It was really worked. You really make things happen. This is how... This is how... It was funny, because this is how I got all involved with promotions and all that stuff to begin with, was with this benefit. And it's really interesting how that was really the thing that started, that got me... It took that thing that was more than... That was beyond... That was above me. It took that greater cause to help me step up and step out. So it was a nice launch for me. And my... Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. sort of in development as a, you know, you know, doer, I guess, of things. But yeah, we do a lot of benefit shows, which I realized that when we were, when we got signed on this G-Tom act, I'm like, wow, this is like, just even in one year, because that Magic Castle show was a benefit show for the library. So then we do the Hunger thing, you know, in November and next year it's the Toy Drive. It's really, but it's good because it, you know, it's good to be able to, at least, if anything, you know, perform and, you know, bring in something for somebody else, if anything. I just think it's so funny that so many people in the subculture do charities and volunteer. It is true. And Cleve Hall and Raven recently made this organization. The Dark Angels. The Dark Angels for, it's a volunteer thing. That was really cool. Yeah, we, that's what. It's so funny. Yeah, that was what, the Dark Angels was developed, recently. Yeah, it was developed recently. And it was for, so the food drive that we performed at Cabo Wabo with G-Tom Mack, that was so amazing. That was to bring the food. For the Dark Angels, that was to hand out the food. And we handed it over at this limousine place. I forget the name. I'm such a, sorry. So we actually literally went there and got to hand out all these turkeys. And not just turkeys. I'm thinking just, I mean, lots of food to these families. And there's, I mean, lines. There's two, there's two ways to answer this, this, this location. I saw the pictures. Yeah. And there was just backed up. You told me about it. And I'm like, well, I'm in school until like five. Well, 4.30 or five. I'm like. No, we, we did it for you. I'm like, I will ditch school. Well, I mean, it was cool. It was awesome. And to see the looks on everybody's faces when they'd get all this food. It was nice. How many kids were there? Oh God, you know, I don't even know. I'm crappy at estimating numbers, like by looks, but there was a lot of, I mean, there was a huge, I mean, a lot, I'm telling you this, it was just lines backed up with family. It was good. So, Many of Odd Nature, I think you guys have heard me say before, is a neglectic, artistic, musically inclined collective of individuals that follow the words and the beats that Charlie puts together. I'd say that it's like one person we worship and follow. Basically, we all worship and follow Charlie. He's a genius. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He just jump and we just start jumping and then she's like, not now, not now. And we're like, okay, and immediately stop. Well, I try to keep promoting a little bit that, you know, she is gorgeous and she is the center of this thing. This is all her and you don't need to circus act. We need to see you. You're awesome. You're such a good performer and stuff and I'm just kind of like, you don't need fire breathers and stuff right now. Well, all that happens with my, it's like, I like, well, it's Carnival Noir related, but I, I, I constantly, when I go to places, I like to be constantly entertaining. I like to be constantly entertaining. like I need and constantly moving yeah so I like to have don't sell yourself short on how entertaining you are to watch you know I mean you're amazing because you're very very intense up there so and the thing is that Charlie is so badass that she can be playing the guitar busting out vocals jump off the stage control the camera recording herself record I've seen it yeah record her yeah record her own band jump back on stage without missing a beat instrument the rest of the cameras to point and do what she wants them to do jump back off stage that was a fun video practically do a one arm flip thank you again darling that was awesome so now let's talk about that let's talk about the shoot we haven't talked about the music video yet that was fun I mean that was a great thing yeah well because it was something that really was impossible to do that we did you know get that many makeups done in two and a half hours and get a whole video shot yeah and the location I mean the dragonfly really helped us out I mean they just they hooked I mean Happening Harry you know he he's the one who opened the door the dragonfly let it happen we were able to really it was a very generous gift from them to be able to shoot over there Cleve Hall was very I love the fact that this guy you know he you know right away I hit him up I'm like hey hey can you help you know with some zombie makeup and without even questioning he was like yeah sure I love that about this guy yeah I mean because I love it I don't know I don't know I don't know I don't know he loves to help you know he likes he's a real helper and he likes I appreciate that and it was awesome like a lot of the a lot of the makeup artists you know I did this like you know I hate to repeat myself but I did this we went to go find zombies at the zombie rock or zombie run and there was a school CMS that was there well it was cinema makeup school where my daughter Constance went yeah but you know so we went there to go recruit zombies and we spoke to the students over there and they're like they knew when I mentioned his name they knew who he was of course and right away he jumped on board because you know he was helping yeah so he really helped because the guy who teaches over there Mike Spatola is an old old friend of mine and he was teaching had just done a zombie crash course before the zombie run oh no shit we were really lucky that was a big zombie weekend there was all these zombie runs zombie walks oh yeah so I contacted Mike over there at cinema makeup school and asked for you know some of his best zombie students and then I also talked to Rich Knight over at Elegance International and we got like about 10 students from each school and it was so cool because they'd never been on set before and done a professional shoot and they were so cool everybody did such a great job and it was cool closing in work together the two schools and everything everybody had a great time they made themselves up as zombies to be in the video and I think it was like I would like to do more stuff like that because to me to be in a school you don't get the full thing until you're on set and you have two hours to get it done and they did incredible work they did it there was meat hanging off of people and then we ended up I didn't know we were gonna originally weren't doing the band but then we ended up having to do you guys also so it was fun too cutting up Charlie and ripping out that one is like Jesus eyeballs out and everything it was fun yeah it was cool it was a bloody mess but all of that got inspired the reason why all of that even got the pressure of happening was my friend Ron Martinez he had a school project to do so this is like that was the thing that originally got my ass together to get the shit taken care of because otherwise it's so easy the problem is I have to be involved in everything with the project but I'm so involved with a lot of things so you know it's easy to get like for example for example getting the goddamn excuse me excuse me you can curse no you can curse so getting for example the fact that we don't have an Elvis because I have to be involved in it and the problem is I don't have time to get involved so it's nice to have certain things give me that time pressure to get it done so I thank Mr. Martinez for having that project but but yeah actually now that I realize it so for the Castle show I wrote this track A Man in His Cape it was written about Micah Colbert he's the guy who throws Right now, on the website, I did it just for tonight, there's actually, on a majority of the pages, if a person goes to each of the pages, if they go to the website, manyofvodnature.com, on each page, there's actually a track. And the only reason why I'm doing it, I'm going to only do it for a limited amount of time. The reason why is because the fucking versions are so, I mean, they're terrible. The quality is terrible. Yeah, but you, but it gives you an idea of what it is. Yeah, no, you can still tell exactly what you're doing. Because we were doing, when we did the last show, we were kind of invited to perform with G. Tom Mack on a song. Oh, that's so cool. On People Are Strange. Yeah. And. That was nice. She sent me the arrangement at two o'clock in the morning of the show. And I heard it, and it was just incredible what she did with it. Because she'd made it so dark and melancholy sounding. And even though it was a very rough recording of it, it gave me chills. And I'm just like, listen to it over and over again. It was awesome to play. I remember that with G. Tom Mack. Yeah. And darling, he was on there too. It was so much fun. It was, I mean, that was awesome. Now I want to be a member. Well, you are. Well, he's always been. He just didn't know it. No, I mean, because I was with bands back, you know, in the Death Rock days with Exquisite Corpse, which was Sean Brennan, who's now with London After Midnight. But we were like that makeup effects band because we had Screaming Man George and John Voolich and the guy who really owns Pop Nerve. And everybody kind of like didn't have time to do it. You know, but we'd do live on stage just embellishments and, you know, we were opening for Specimen on Halloween night, I remember, and Ollie Wisdom just stepped right in that blood and went whoop, bam, on his ass. That's too bad. I was over at Scream. You know, it was fun. But yeah, I miss doing that. I miss playing. So I never made a dime off playing music, but I love doing it. We'll be dragging him around, I think, as much as we can. I think I'll drag you some around too. We could definitely use the assistance. So he's quite the player. It was cool. He had this, we performed it at his Halloween party. I remember that. The cops kept getting calls. It was so cool to go there and like to walk around his house. The slipper story is I did actually a photo shoot the morning of the gig we did and it was like five o'clock in the morning with Megalyn Hayne and I was like, oh my God, who wanted me in this water lake carrying this girl with this long flowing red thing and it was a really cool shot and everything but I sank up to my ass in mud and that was where my slippers ended up because it's the third time in my life I've been stuck in a quicksand. I just experienced it. Oh man. Yeah, so I knew to wear something I could get out of easily because the shoes do stay down there. The first time it was combat boots and getting your foot out of a tied up combat boot and it's a quicksand while a big foot and a photographer trying to pull you out. Oh wow. That was Florida. Geez. Yeah. Because everything that correlates in the game I think goes with the following episode. Somehow affects it, yeah. The games are watched TV so. I didn't understand how that was going on because I didn't follow the game but I did follow the TV show. I don't know if you guys followed Defiance at all. I just saw the first one. That was it. So essentially it's it's in the future. No, it's on this planet. It's on Earth. Oh yeah. St. Louis. Yes. I remember the Earth. The Defiance happens in St. Louis but it's, there's this other world and it's gonna die. So the different classes hop on these ships and go away.
