Something is holding me back Is it because I'm black? Huh? Oh! Somebody please tell me Is it because I'm black? With my black skin The Great Cam Booth, Is It Because I'm Black is the name of that tune from a pretty cool collection called Darker Than Blue, Soul from Jamtown. It's a collection of Kingston artists from between the years of 1973 and 1980 which Scott Rocksteady usually... I guess the 60s are kind of the golden age, but that's when reggae sort of started to break out. Got a little bit more of a funky side, a little bit more social awareness going on. Before that we heard the Como Mamas, a great gospel collection. First LP was just all acapella and really captivating. I don't play it a lot on the show, but it's more of kind of a sit by yourself, a little bit of a fly-by-about. But that's from the latest collection. That's a single called Out of the Wilderness. It's a B-side for Well Well, Don't Worry About Me. And they put some music behind it. The Como Mamas. You can find that on Daptone Records. Daptone Records. DaptoneRecords.com is the website. Very nice boutique label running out of Brooklyn, and they're making waves worldwide. Before that we heard some Philly sounds, some classic stuff from Honey and the Bees, Love Addict is the name of that tune. And prior to that some late 60s South Carolina soul from The Flirtations, Nothing But a Heartache. Great stuff. Love joins us. This is Neighborhood Love Radio. We are the musical extension of Neighborhood-Love.com, which is a website devoted to street culture, music, food, fashion, etc. The online shop is now open. Skateboard decks, T-shirts. Go check them out. Go to Neighborhood-Love.com and check that little shop button near the top and check out what we got. See if we got something for you. Of course, all the archives for this show. I think we're on number... I think this is number 74 show that we're doing currently. I'm not... I don't really remember. But all the archives, the past shows are archived there at the website Neighborhood-Love.com. Take a peek. If you're not careful, you might like something. Yo, Apollo. Count on you is the name of the single there. From his latest record out. I don't have the name right here, but it was out just a couple weeks back. We started off the set. Buckshot Lafonc. Breakfast at Denny's was namely that hip-hop tune featuring the saxophone Mr. Branford Marsalis. After that, we heard brand new music from Prince. There were not only... We've seen many kings, we've seen many queens, but there's only one Prince. You know is the name of that tune from his latest record out. Oh, it was just out this week, just released this week. Art Official Age. Art Official Age is the name of that tune. Or excuse me, in the name of the record out on his own NPG. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. Records. That kind of funk. There's a couple other tunes on the record that he sort of revives from his, for lack of a better word, character voices. Like Bob, Bob George from the Black Elm. You Prince fans will know what I'm talking about. Right after that, we heard D'Angelo, Devil's Pie. That's the acapella interlude version. D'Angelo. And then wrapped up the set there with Christian Gregory. And that brings us right back to present time, right here, right now, you and me. There's all kinds of cool shit going on this next month. This weekend, I'm hoping to hit up at the Gabba Gallery. They got a pretty cool art show called Drop In. It's an exhibition dedicated to skateboarding culture and street art. Essentially, it's painted skateboard decks, which will be pretty cool, but it's just, you're going to be in good company there. I know a lot of these artists here. Jennifer Corson, Bobik, Peter Greco, Cody Bain. There's a whole bunch, and they're all good people. And it's going to be a pretty fun event. Anyway, that's going on. It's going on Friday at the Gabba Gallery. Reception is at six to nine, and then I think the gallery is open a little while after that. But then also Saturday is the Filipino Fest over here in Grand Park in downtown LA. Music, food, I'm looking forward to that. I'm going to bring the kid. Grand Park this Saturday for the Filipino Fest. And then in, what is it, two weeks, I think? Taste of Soul? Yeah, two weeks, day 18th, October 18th. That's a big one there, loved ones. Taste of Soul. I go to this every year, basically. It's a collection down there in central LA on Crenshaw. Right by MLK. And it's essentially a food festival, but they got a lot of artists. I saw El DeBarge there a couple years ago. If you love the Southern food like I do, man. Fried chicken, greens, barbecue, peach cobbler. Man, I will go until I get full, and then... I'm going to eat a little bit more after that. And there's plenty of good music going on down there. Check it out, Taste of Soul. Family festival, that's going on October 18th. I'm on Crenshaw between Stocker and Rodeo. Right by MLK. If you want to find me, I'll be one of the few white people that's there before 12. At least one that's not working. And I might be the one in the pregnant pants too, because... I'm going to be the one in the pregnant pants too, because... I'm going to be the one in the pregnant pants too, because... I'm going to be the one in the pregnant pants too, because... I'm going to be doing a lot of eating. Hey loved ones, you want to email me with any questions or anything like that. Hey loved ones, you want to email me with any questions or anything like that. Hey loved ones, you want to email me with any questions or anything like that. You want to hear some more music? Yeah. I got some brand new stuff from, oh, here's a new tune from Flying Lotus. I used to be neighbors with the guy, Steven. And that dude has the most insane DVD collection. I mean, no need to go to the video store if that guy's your neighbor. And he's more than happy to share. He's a really good dude. Flying Lotus. Cronus the Terminator is the name of the tune from his brand new album out on the 7th called You're Dead. That's on Warp Records. Check them out on warp.net. Cronus the Terminator.
